Les œuvres présentées évoquent avec ironie les séances régulières de magazines dans la Medina de Marrakech ou de Casablanca, au cours desquelles le Maroc sert souvent de toile de fond exotique. Pour trancher avec les modèles européens habituellement photographiés, Hassan Hajjaj présente une série de portraits de femmes marocaines, vêtues de ses propres créations qui sont le plus souvent influencées des traditions vestimentaires marocaines. D’autres photographies montrent des femmes portant le Hijab. En écho, une série de portraits peints représentent également des femmes voilées, sur des fonds aux couleurs vives. ESPACE 2 - INSTALLATION U-LOT, SÉRIES « LEGS », « GNAWI RIDERS » ET « KESH ANGELS » L’exposition se poursuit avec des œuvres issues de différentes séries, ainsi qu’une installation vidéo inédite intitulée U-LOT. Celle-ci prolonge la réflexion de l’artiste sur le statut ambigu du voile au sein de nos sociétés, en mettant en regard HH04 Hassan Hajjaj frontalement des portraits de femmes voilées. Keziah Jones De la série « My Rockstars » © Hassan Hajjaj, 2011/1432 Non loin de cette vidéo sont présentées les photographies au cadrage singulier de la série « Legs », mettant en évidence les jambes de modèles vêtus de tenues aux origines culturelles très variées. Ce travail est une transition entre la première partie de l’exposition qui s’inscrit dans l’univers de la mode et du vêtement au sens large, et la suite du parcours qui s’ancre davantage dans le quotidien et les modes de vie des modèles photographiés. Sur ces images se côtoient des éléments traditionnels et des accessoires reprenant les logos de grandes marques de luxe. Vives et colorées, à l’instar de l’ensemble du travail d’Hassan Hajjaj, elles résonnent avec ses réalisations sur la mode, et rappelle une fois de plus cet univers pop inspiré des couleurs et de la lumière marocaine. Ainsi, Hassan Hajjaj rappelle-t-il souvent ses liens et son attachement pour son pays natal, le Maroc : « J’aime particulièrement la lumière et les couleurs du Maroc. J’aime toutes les couleurs, mais j’aime surtout le méli-mélo de nuances. J’ai appris à ne pas avoir peur de tout mélanger. La musique est également très importante pour moi et j’en écoute en travaillant.Peut-être que ça se voit, les images et les cadres possèdent une sorte de rythme. » 4 Hassan Hajjaj · MEP EXPOSITION DOSSIER DE PRESSE Cette section se poursuit avec la mise en parallèle de deux séries : « Gnawi Riders » et « Kesh Angels ». Dans la première, Hassan Hajjaj saisit des musiciens gnaoua, issus de la culture traditionnelle éponyme. Tous les modèles sont des hommes posant sur des motos de la même manière : un pied à terre, il se dégage de chacun d’eux un grand sentiment de fierté. À cet ensemble répondent les œuvres de « Kesh Angels », dont le titre s’inspire des gangs des Hells Angels, tout en reprenant pour la première partie du nom le diminutif de Marrakech (« Kesh »). Les portraits saisis ici sont ceux de femmes vêtues de djellaba, de foulards, de voiles ou d’autres éléments traditionnels avec lesquels contrastent la modernité et l’aspect étonnant de certains détails, comme la couleur vive des tissus, les motifs léopard, les lunettes de soleil ou bien les chaussures imitant de grandes marques de luxe. L’allure fière et conquérante, Hassan Hajjaj les fait poser sur leur moto, transport qu’elles utilisent quotidiennement pour se déplacer dans Marrakech. ESPACE 3 - MY ROCKSTARS La série « My Rockstars » est un vibrant hommage aux personnalités issues de HH05 multiples horizons côtoyées par Hassan Hajjaj : célébrités internationales, mais Hassan Hajjaj Meryem Benmbarek aussi amis ou connaissances de l’artiste, inconnus du grand public. Cette préparation permet ainsi une grande liberté au modèle à qui Hassan Hajjaj accorde une place prépondérante. Ce n’est pas uniquement sa photographie mais aussi celle de la personne saisie. C’est un travail collaboratif au cours duquel le modèle doit laisser transparaître son caractère, ses goûts, en proposant parfois lui-même les accessoires et la scénographie de la prise de vue. ESPACE 4 - LE NOIR ET BLANC L’exposition se clôt sur un ensemble de photographies inédites en noir et blanc. Portraits, photographies de groupes, clichés saisis dans la rue à l’aspect davantage documentaire : autant d’éléments qui tranchent formellement avec les ensembles colorés précédents. MEP · Hassan Hajjaj 5 DOSSIER DE PRESSE EXPOSITION Mais quelle que soit la série, la couleur de la photographie ou le modèle, Hassan Hajjaj se plaît à rappeler : « Je veux partager avec le monde entier ce que je connais du Maroc : une énergie et une attitude ; l’inventivité et le glamour de la mode de HH02 Hassan Hajjaj rue ; le graphisme étonnant véhiculé par les objets du quotidien ; la jovialité et la Master Cobra Mansa force de caractère des gens. » De la série « My Rockstars » © Hassan Hajjaj, 2012/1433 TRANSFORMATION DE LA MEP EN MAISON MAROCAINE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE À l’occasion de l’exposition, Hassan Hajjaj offre lui-même carte blanche à deux artistes marocaines qu’il invite successivement à présenter leur travail au sein du Studio de la MEP : Zahrin Kahlo (11.09-13.10) et Lamia Naji (18.10-17.11). L’artiste investit ainsi les lieux de son univers singulier et y présente ses objets dérivés, tapis, mobiliers, vêtements… Car outre la photographie, le design et le travail de récupération sont au cœur de la démarche d’Hassan Hajjaj qui mixe influences ethniques, logos et objets du quotidien. Ses créations s’insipirent de tous les clichés et les détournent en leur donnant une forme contemporaine au kitsch assumé. Le chameau, les babouches, le caftan, la théière, sont ainsi pour lui des emblèmes. Il transforme des cageots de soda en bancs, des pots de peintures en supports de tabourets et des signaux routiers en plateaux de tables, tandis que les boites de conserves deviennent des lustres. 6 Hassan Hajjaj · MEP EXPOSITION DOSSIER DE PRESSE AUTOUR DE L’EXPOSITION BIENNALE DES PHOTOGRAPHES DU MONDE ARABE COMPTEMPORAIN Initiée en 2015 par l’Institut du monde arabe et la Maison Européenne de la Photographie, la Biennale poursuit l’exploration de la création photographique dans le monde arabe, fidèle aux lignes directrices qui ont fait son succès : promouvoir la richesse et la diversité de cette création à travers des expositions réparties sur plusieurs lieux, entre MEP et IMA, porter un regard sur le monde arabe contemporain tout en privilégiant la démarche artistique et réunir des créateurs de toutes origines.

    Moroccan Fashion Designers Elizabeth Kutesko Encyclopedia entry DOI: 10.2752/BEWDF/EDch1711 October 2013 Abstract Since the last decade of the twentieth century and with the turn of the twenty-first, a new generation of Moroccan fashion designers and photographers has played a part on the international fashion stage, combining Western-style fashions with elements of traditional Arab and Berber dress to subvert both European and Moroccan sartorial conventions. While notable names such as Amine Bendriouch, Alber Elbaz, Jean-Charles de Caselbajac, Hisham Oumlil, Aziz Bekkaoui, Samira Haddouchi, and Hassan Hajjaj are not the earliest Moroccan fashion innovators, their fusion of Western-based training and Moroccan-centered identities makes them initiators in the production of hybrid designs, neither “Moroccan” nor “Western.” The work of these designers uses the medium of dress to express, in various manifestations, artistic, cultural, and political ideas concerning Morocco’s cross-cultural contact with the West. As commonly accepted, dress is not simply cloth but a complex system of communication that is informed, however subliminally, by human contact in and with the forces of the surrounding world. These elements of communication are not discrete entities but are all interrelated in a process of collision and difference, which incorporates interaction, learning, and exchange between cultures. Occupying the northwestern corner of Africa, Morocco stands at a crossroads between three continents, and Moroccan dress can be understood as documenting the different cultures that have encountered one another as a result of contact between Europe, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa. Barbo 2015 Abstract Reductive ideas confining Muslim women to notions of the highly erotic, yet cloistered, have been perpetuated to the general public through the consumption of Orientalist material culture. Objects such as colonial post-cards and comic strips, and even music-cafés, have established harem images of Arab women as truth in Western cultural imaginary of the East. Today, a history of Orientalist stereotypes continues to shape many people’s ideas about Arab women. In recent months, Muslim women have become the most widespread target of hate crimes in France. Debates concerning the right to wear the Islamic headscarf in French public spaces, including those centered on the experiences of young, Muslim women, have proven to be circular and repetitive. Moreover, the motivating factors of most debates regarding the veil, such as legitimizing a certain conception of Frenchness, profit from a perpetuation of stereotypes that depict the veil as a form of female enslavement. Thus, Muslim women’s subjectivity is often superseded in conversations about the headscarf. This dissertation therefore examines how emergent and cross-cultural artists in France and the Maghreb may be able to represent the veil in a more nuanced fashion than traditional, political Manichean discourse.

    Hassan Hajjaj A Taste of Things to Come 5 August - 27 September 2020 36 Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, KR Barakat Contemporary presents A Taste of Things to Come, a solo exhibition of Hassan Hajjaj from Wednesday, August 5 to Sunday, September 27, 2020. Born in 1961 in Larache, Morocco, Hajjaj moved to the United Kingdom with his family at an early age. Today, he is an artist working principally in the photographic medium, with bases in both Morocco and the UK. The message of A Taste of Things to Come offers an excellent illustration of Hajjaj’s inclusive worldview, which urges us to care for one another as we proceed through the current moment of global change faced by humankind, looking at the future from a perspective that is constructive and positive. Through his artistic body of work, he strives to convey the importance of communicating and sharing diverse cultural tastes. Hajjaj’s photographs feature the powerful and rhythmic colors idiosyncratic poses. In his portraits, the artist produces creative frames that combine commercial objects consumed in Morocco, including drinks, cans of food, toys, recycled tires, Blaize, framed photography by ©Hassan Hajjaj, 2013/1434 and matchboxes. Rather than being mere decorations, these are reinterpretations of Morocco’s traditional mosaic patterns and tiles from Hajjaj’s perspective, giving excellent expression to the complexity of contemporary culture. His artistic vision represents the coalescence of powerful North African visual elements and his experiences with multicultural artistic realms that he encountered as a matter of course in the vast and cosmopolitan city of London during the 1970s and 1980s, including street music, fashion, and interior design.

Portraiture features ethnically diverse and world-renowned artists, whose portraits reflect their personal and cultural identity, while also utilizing paint, props, pattern, and the lack thereof to emphasize their subjects. Among the most promising emerging and established artists of today, Portraiture includes Omar Victor Diop, Lalla Essaydi, Hassan Hajjaj, Hendrik Kerstens, Zanele Muholi, and Aida Muluneh. Coinciding with Portraiture is Sally Mann: Emmett, Jessie, and Virginia, an exhibition of intimate family photographs. Self-taught Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens’ muse is his daughter Paula, who has been his primary subject for over two decades. Photographing Paula in a single space, Kerstens freely explores her as a subject. His early portraits depict the everyday, like Paula standing on a chair ready for swim practice or suffering from a sunburn, which emanated from his paternal need to capture the fleeting essence of her childhood. Recently, Kerstens’ photographs reflect the craftsmanship and lighting of seventeenth century Dutch painted portraiture. With a witty twist, his images create a dialogue between the past and present by utilizing atypical contemporary props that suggest antiquity.
