Vaime Kabur algatas ka käesoleva järje koostamise. Enne lõplikku lahkumist 9. veebruaril 2005. a. jõudis ta bibliograafia kartoteegina valmis teha. Kartoteek sisaldas Rahvusraamatu- kogu andmebaasidest leitu kõrval hulgaliselt Jaan Krossilt saadud andmeid, eriti Estonica’ga seotud allikate kohta. Edasine töö bibliograafiaga toimus juba Eesti Rahvusraamatukogus. Bibliograafia ülesehituses on järgitud 1997. a. ilmunud põhiväljaannet. Andmed põhiväljaandes kajastamata jäänud enne 1997. a. ilmunud kirjutiste kohta on paigutatud eraldi lisasse. Palju kirjeid lisandus sinna Cornelius Hasselblatti koostatud bibliograafiast “Estnische Literatur in deutscher Sprache 1784-2003” (2004) ja Soome artiklite andmebaasist ARTO, mida Helsingi Ülikooli Raamatukogu võimaldas bibliograafia koostamisel kasutada. Bibliograafiat täiendavad nime- ja J. Krossi kirjutiste pealkirjade registrid. Üksnes võõrkeeltes ilmunud publitsistika

  • Introduction from the Editor
INTRODUCTION FROM THE EDITOR The creative works of the eminent Estonian writer Jaan Kross (1920–2007) have long attracted the members of the Department of Russian Literature at the University of Tartu with their rich opportunities to delve into the intersec- tion of Russian and Estonian cultures and into the poetics of this acknowledged master’s historical novels. This focus became a priority within the research pro- ject “The Reception of Russian Literature in Estonia in the 20th Century: from Interpretation to Translation”, which began in 2009. This research project has resulted in the collective monograph offered here to readers. The works con- tained herein are the fruit of collective effort in the direct sense of the word — not only because they are all devoted to one author (the prose, dramaturgy, and poetry translations of Jaan Kross), but also because the contributing scholars strive for common goals and follow the similar methodological principles1. This monograph is composed of three parts. The first contains concentra- ted research into the historical and literary sources for those of Kross’s historical works that are directly or indirectly connected with Russian culture. In stu- dying any single layer of the fictional text, it inevitably becomes necessary for the scholar to describe the text as a whole. Consequently, this part of the mono- graph attempts to analyze several general characteristics of the poetics of Jaan Kross’s historical prose. While in no way claiming to provide comprehensive coverage of the structural features of Kross’s works, the articles’ authors, none- theless, strive to identify the key, dominant features of the analyzed texts.

  • ON the LITERARY LIFE in the SOVIET ESTONIA SOVIET INTHE LIFE LITERARY on the Tutions
COLLOQUIA | SIRJE OLESK | On the Literary Life ISSN 1822-3737 in the Soviet Estonia Abstract: The paper deals with the literature of the Soviet Estonia that was a very ambivalent phenomenon. It suffered considerably in the forties and fifties by the direct assault repressions. Banning the publishing of the exile authors destroyed the continuity of the literature and spoiled the best crea- tive years of many writers who had stayed homeland. In the early sixties a new generation came into the Estonian literature, by today they have become the living classics (Hando Runnel, Paul-Erik Rummo, Mats Traat, Arvo Valton, Jaan Kaplinski, Viivi Luik, Juhan Viiding etc.). The doctrine of “the flourishing culture” was included in the Soviet doctrine, so the authori- ties had to bear the writers, though they tried to control and direct them permanently. Though the pressure of the regime eased in the sixties, the censorship and the party’s guidance still endured. This was the reason why there were no memoirists or essayists, why many authors have some confus- ing texts among their early works, why the tradition of the Estonian litera- ture is fragmentary. In the last decades of the occupation the creative unions were in opposition rather than in collaboration with the establishment. Key words: Estonian literature, Soviet literature, literary life, censorship. Specifics of the Soviet literary life The forties were the watershed decade in the history of all the Baltic States including Estonia. In the period the Estonian society was divided into two – those who did not leave their home country stayed under the Soviet despotism, and those who escaped from Estonia in 1943–1944 formed the Estonian exile society with its main centres in Sweden, Canada and the USA.

INTERLITT ERA RIA 2013, 18/1: 211–225 Of Hard Joy: Half a Century of Viivi Luik’s Creations. Poetry ARNE MERILAI Abstract. Viivi Luik has been active in Estonian literature for half a century: from the times of Soviet censorship to regained independence. Her renowned novels Seitsmes rahukevad (The Seventh Spring of Peace, 1985) and Ajaloo ilu (The Beauty of History, 1991) have been published in a number of foreign languages. Her first collection of poetry Pilvede püha (Holiday of Clouds) appeared in 1965. Since then ten more col- lections have followed: Taevaste tuul (Wind of the Skies, 1966), Lauludemüüja (Song Vendor, 1968), Hääl (Voice, 1968), Ole kus oled (Stay Where You Are, 1971), Pildi sisse minek (Entering a Picture, 1973), Põliskevad (Perpetual Spring, 1975), Maapäälsed as- jad (Earthly Matters, 1978), and Rängast rõõmust (Of Hard Joy, 1982). In addition, she has published three books of selected verse together with the volume of collected verse (2006), as well as four books of fiction, three volumes of essays, several chil- dren’s books and two dramas. Many Estonian songwriters have appreciated her lyr- ics, evident in dozens of music books and recordings. Guided by a methodologically holistic perspective and moving towards a “unified field theory” of literary criticism, this contribution to Luik scholarship makes available, for the first time, a biobiblio- graphical comparative introduction of all of her works for the international audience. It illuminates the broadly representative character of her oeuvre and shows how Luik charts the course for an entire generation of “Soviet” writers of the Baltics as “border states”.
