  • Football and Romanian Masculinity. How It Is Constructed by the Sport Media?
STUDIA UBB SOCIOLOGIA, 62 (LXII), 2, 2017, pp. 79-97 DOI: 10.1515/subbs-2017-0012 FOOTBALL AND ROMANIAN MASCULINITY. HOW IT IS CONSTRUCTED BY THE SPORT MEDIA? LÁSZLÓ PÉTER1 ABSTRACT. The present article is focusing on hegemonic masculinity represented and expressed by the professional footballers. Based on the empirical study using text analysis of leading articles published in central Romanian sport newspapers I draw the ideal-typical picture of the normative model of Romanian hegemonic masculinity in which the domestic coaches play a determinant role. Their personal-individual and collective-professional features like determination, steadiness, honesty, pride, mutual respect, knowledge, tenaciousness, sense of vocation, solidarity, spirit of fighting are the corner points of the constructed Romanian manhood, or hegemonic masculinity during social change. The manliness is traced along the inner characteristic of the coaches but in strong contradiction with the foreign trainers. In this respect I can state that football is connected not only with masculinity but in some respect also with the national characteristics embodied by the Romanian coaches especially those working home. Keywords: football, hegemonic masculinity, media, discourses Introduction Football and masculinity had been connected: ball games were played by men as early as in the antiquity and in the Middle Ages. It can be assumed that the “game”, often leading to fights, hitting and affray, provided an opportunity to men to express and show their physical strength, resolution and masculine qualities to the women of the community. Playing ball games meant public/ community events, during which participant men could leave the monotonous routine of everyday life behind and could show off their masculine features to their audience.2 Team sports represent socializing frames in which competing or contesting men acquire and express the institutional and organized standards of their masculinity (Anderson, 2008).

In order to achieve this purpose, I use the results of a field experiment conducted in Bucharest during the local elections, which took place on the 10th of June 2012. Using the experimental results, I aim to answer two types of research questions. The first concerns the extent to which results obtained through different voting rules really differ in a real life setting, and if so, whether it is due only to the aggregation rule or also to a change in electoral behaviour caused by changing the rule.

  • The Extreme Right in Contemporary Romania
INTERNATIONAL POLICY ANALYSIS The Extreme Right in Contemporary Romania RADU CINPOEª October 2012 n In contrast to the recent past of the country, there is a low presence of extreme right groups in the electoral competition of today’s Romania. A visible surge in the politi- cal success of such parties in the upcoming parliamentary elections of December 2012 seems to be unlikely. This signals a difference from the current trend in other European countries, but there is still potential for the growth of extremism in Roma- nia aligning it with the general direction in Europe. n Racist, discriminatory and intolerant attitudes are present within society. Casual intol- erance is widespread and racist or discriminatory statements often go unpunished. In the absence of a desire by politicians to lead by example, it is left to civil society organisations to pursue an educative agenda without much state-driven support. n Several prominent members of extreme right parties found refuge in other political forces in the last years. These cases of party migration make it hard to believe that the extreme views held by some of these ex-leaders of right-wing extremism have not found support in the political parties where they currently operate. The fact that some of these individuals manage to rally electoral support may in fact suggest that this happens precisely because of their original views and attitudes, rather than in spite of them. • Nicknames of Romanian Politicians After 1989
Nicknames of Romanian Politicians after 1989 Daiana FELECAN, Oliviu FELECAN Key-words: nicknames, political discourse, pragmalinguistics, semantics, sociolinguistics 1. Preliminaries 1.1. Politicians’ nicknames – strategies of argumentum ad hominem1 The present-day world of Romanian politics takes the shape of a theatre of operations from a warring area, a Gaza Strip whose property deed is continually claimed by parties found at either ends of the political spectrum. These parties insult one another publicly, suspect and tell on one another to the National Anticorruption Directorate. They even listen in on their private conversations and discredit each other by means of compromising films. All the aforementioned events, alongside many others, unfold before the alert yet blind eyes and under the allegedly fair consideration of a system of justice that is overwhelmed by the multitude of penal cases pending before courts of law, with ever-postponed trial dates. Nicknames have become means of attack, picked by belligerent interlocutors from the arsenal at hand. They are prolonged-release antidotes used to destroy opponents and their effect is visible in the long run, as nicknames become part of users’ collective memory. When this happens, speakers associate a nicknamed individual with the verbal tag considered emblematic of the nickname bearer. Contemporary Romanian society appears to be increasingly oblivious of the principles that underlie its foundation (politeness, promoting respect in interpersonal relationships and acknowledging the distribution of social roles). As a result, the psychological and linguistic profile of Romanian society was altered along with the institution of democracy after 1989. The consequences of hastily adopting a recently imported configuration, unspecific to a community that is respectful of traditional values yet anxious to follow the pace of globalisation and Americanisation at once and at any cost, are also salient in one of the most prolific language compartments, i.e.

In other words, the task of gathering longitudinal data on antisemitism in the country permitting to forge a ”perceptual map” that would select in consistent aspects and select out inconsistencies3 is still in the bud. ”Us vs. Them” As articles in the daily press or in weeklies with direct or allusive antisemitic tones began to appear, the daily Adevarul on 27-28 July 1991 for the first time mentioned a poll in which Jews were subjected to scrutiny as a separate category of national minorities subjected to what the Romanian Institute for Public Opinion Polling (IRSOP)4 either a ”press syndrome” (i.e. reports designed to attract readership by exploiting existing prejudice) or a ”social syndrome”.

HOW REGIMES DICTATE OLIGARCHS & THEIR FOOTBALL CLUBS: CASE STUDIES COMPARISON OF OLIGARCH FOOTBALL CLUB OWNERSHIP IN DAGESTAN, ROMANIA, & TRANSNISTRIA FROM 1993-2014 MELISSA A. McDONALD A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master in the program of Russian and East European Studies in the Graduate School. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Graeme Robertson Robert Jenkins Milada Vachudova © 2014 Melissa A. McDonald ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Melissa A. McDonald: How Regimes Dictate Oligarchs & Their Football Clubs: Case Studies Comparison of Oligarch Football Club Ownership in Dagestan, Romania, & Transnistria from 1993-2014 (Under the direction of Graeme Robertson) This thesis examines how oligarch football club investments in Central and Eastern Europe face restrictions based on regime type. Oligarchs gained political and economic control of this region following the collapse of communist regimes in the early 1990s. This region also saw great change when athletic institutions fell and football became an avenue for oligarchs to ensure political capital. Although many similarities exist, I argue that oligarchs use different strategies toward clubs to ensure beneficial forms of political capital based on their respective regimes. As a result, I highlight the structure of oligarchs in neo-authoritarian, oligarchical democracy, and de facto state regimes to assess how regimes influence oligarchs’ use of football clubs. I advance this discussion with three case studies of oligarchs and their ownership of local football clubs. My cases include Suleyman Kerimov and FC Anzhi Dagestan, Gigi Becali and FC Steaua București, and Viktor Gushan and FC Sheriff Transnistria.

An Analysis of Populist Discourse in the 2014 European Parliament Elections in Romania Abstract Populism is on the rise in Europe; this is a fact attested by the success of populist parties in recent elec- tions (regional, national, European). Populists’ electoral performance can be explained from a variety of per- spectives, depending on the focus of the analysis; e.g. ideological, socio-economic, political factors. This paper aims to contribute insightful observations to the attempts to show how these parties have managed to score so well in elections by analyzing the communication and discursive practices used by populist politicians. I will focus on examining elements of populist rhetoric used by populist politicians, as well as by mainstream politicians in televised debates and election posters from the 2014 European Parliament election campaign in Romania. Introduction The recent success of the right (and extreme right) parties in the regional, national and Eu- ropean elections should not be too surprising, given the rise of populism in Europe, especially in Western Europe, during the last two decades. The growth of populist parties and ideologies comes from numerous and various sources, ranging from general disappointment with main- stream politics to increasing fear of immigration (Albertazzi & McDonnell, 2008). euroPOLIS vol. 4, no. 2/2010 INTELLECTUALS AND POLITICS. The Obsession of a Phantasmagorical Betrayal Sorin Bocancea “Petre Andrei” University Abstract The issue of the relationship between intellectuals and politics started to be more vividly discussed after ’89 although it is more than two thousand years old. Having been recently liberated from a totalitarian political regime, which required each individual who belonged to this category to be “a good propagandist of Marxism-Leninism”, Romanian intellectuals started to taste political freedom. However, if during the communist period they formed a common body, being subject to the same prohibitions, in democracy – as it had been expected – various differences of opinion and option in what regards the relationship with politics have started to emerge. It is an old story and this image of the intellectual who is deemed to have the duty of being apolitical originates in a poor understanding of Plato’s philosophy. This understanding was theorised in the 20th century by Julien Benda, author of the well-known work The Betrayal of the Intellectuals, who was also misunderstood. Hence, an entire tradition of stigmatising the intellectuals’ involvement in politics emerged. I shall point out that Plato did not see any contradiction between the status of philosopher and that of politician and that the intellectuals and scholars accused by Benda have not betrayed anything. After twenty years of democracy, the Romanian society is horrified by the fact that illiteracy and rudeness have entered the foreground of politics, or, as it is often said in other words, by the fact that the Romanian political space has been “vanghelised” or “becalised” – terms derived from the names of the most mediatised inept people in our political class, Marian Vanghelie and George (aka Gigi) Becali.
