Oral History Interview with Brian Randell January 7, 2021 Via Zoom Conducted by William Aspray Charles Babbage Institute 1 Abstract Brian Randell tells about his upbringing and his work at English Electric, IBM, and Newcastle University. The primary topic of the interview is his work in the history of computing. He discusses his discovery of the Irish computer pioneer Percy Ludgate, the preparation of his edited volume The Origins of Digital Computers, various lectures he has given on the history of computing, his PhD supervision of Martin Campbell-Kelly, the Computer History Museum, his contribution to the second edition of A Computer Perspective, and his involvement in making public the World War 2 Bletchley Park Colossus code- breaking machines, among other topics. Published and used by INCOSE with permission. Abstract. This paper describes a use case driven approach for functional analysis/allocation and requirements flowdown. The approach utilizes use cases and use case realizations for functional architecture modeling, which in turn form the basis for design synthesis and requirements flowdown. We refer to this approach as the FAR (Functional Architecture by use case Realizations) approach. The FAR approach is currently applied in several large-scale defense projects within BAE Systems Hägglunds AB and the experience so far is quite positive. The approach is illustrated throughout the paper using the well known Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) example. INTRODUCTION Organizations developing software intensive defense systems, for example vehicles, are today faced with a number of challenges. These challenges are related to the characteristics of both the market place and the system domain. • Systems are growing ever more complex, consisting of tightly integrated mechanical, electrical/electronic and software components. • Systems have very long life spans, typically 30 years or longer. • Due to reduced acquisition budgets, these systems are often developed in relatively short series; ranging from only a few to several hundred units. -

[email protected], [email protected]. 08056023566 ABSTRACT: The concepts of structured and object-oriented programming methods are not relatively new but these approaches are still very much useful and relevant in today’s programming paradigm. In this paper, we distinguish the features of structured programs from that of object oriented programs. Structured programming is a method of organizing and coding programs that can provide easy understanding and modification, whereas object- oriented programming (OOP) consists of a set of objects, which can vary dynamically, and which can execute by acting and reacting to each other, in much the same way that a real-world process proceeds (the interaction of real- world objects). An object-oriented approach makes programs more intuitive to design, faster to develop, more amenable to modifications, and easier to understand. With the traditional, procedural-oriented/structured programming, a program describes a series of steps to be performed (an algorithm). This paper is a discussion of a one-semester course that I have taught during the past few years in the Department of Computer Sciences at Purdue University. The amount of material that could be included in such a course is overwhelming, and the literature in the subject has increased at a great rate in the past decade. A syllabus and list of major references are presented here as they are presented to the students. The course develops a few major themes, several of which arc discussed briefly in the paper. The coume has been an interesting and stimulating experience for me. and for some of the students who took the course. I do not foresee a rapid expansion in the number of uniVcCiities that will offer courses in the history of computing. -

Software development for robotics applications is a sophisticated en- deavor as robots are inherently complex. Explicit modeling of the architecture and behavior of robotics application yields many advantages to cope with this complexity by identifying and separating logically and physically independent components and by hierarchically structuring the system under development. On top of component and connector models we propose modeling the requirements on the behavior of robotics software components using I/O! automata [29]. This approach facilitates early simulation of requirements model, allows to subject these to formal analysis and to generate the software from them. In this paper, we introduce an extension of the architecture description language MontiArc to model the requirements on components with I/O! automata, which are defined in the spirit of Martin Glinz’ Statecharts for requirements modeling [10]. Requirement elicitation is a very critical step in software develop- ment. In order to develop adequate software which answers to user’s needs, it is essential to understand the real-world environment, the users themselves, goals, constraints, and risks and its possible solutions. Unable to describe correct re- quirements can lead to a massive software development failure. This paper aims to propose an integrated framework for requirement elicitation which combines the characteristics of goal-based requirement engineering methods, Problem Frame (PF), and Message Sequence Chart (MSC). The proposed framework us- es i* framework to describe the dependency relationships between actors, PF to analyze the constraints that exist in the real world, KAOS’ to analyze obstacles, and MSC to show the dynamic behavior of the system. Failing to describe the correct requirement can lead to a massive failure in the whole development. However, requirement engineering is not an easy task. It has to keep up with the ever-changing environment which caused it to be a continuous process in a software development. To keep up with changes, requirements must have a base condition, with details that can be changed flexibly without drifting apart from the main objective of the project. -
