    'Pcnnsyl\'an1a ittcnnonltc Volume 26, Number 1 January 2003 ) .' Contributors to This Issue Noah L. Hershey, son of Noah Hershey and Marie Denlinger, was born on July 8, 1920, on a farm in West Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Following graduation from high school in 1938, he attended the Short Term Winter Bible School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1940 and 1941. On November 27, 1941, with Bishop Abram Martin officiating, he married Alta Mary Leaman; this union was blessed with two sons and six daughters. In 1946 he was ordained as a min­ ister for the Parkesburg Mennonite Church and in 1973 as a bishop for the Millwood District of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, where he served until his retirement in 1991. From 1981 to 1991 he served as Moderator of Lancaster Mennonite Conference. He served on the board of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society from 1977 to 1991, including 11 years as chair of that board from 1980 to 1991. In 1989 he edited a genealogy entitled The Descendants of John Eby Hershel) and Anna Mellinger Hershey. He may be reached at 8875 North Moscow Road, Parkesburg, PA 19365- 1822. Denise Witwer Lahr, like Peter Eby, was raised in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She received the B.A. (1972) in General Arts and Sciences from Penn State, University Park, and an M.A. (1982) from the University of California at Berkeley, where she also served as a lecturer in microbiology. Currently, she does substitute teaching in the Middletown Area School District. Her recent interest in family history was prompted by the discovery of an incomplete genealogical outline of the Lahr family and letters from Germany found among the possessions of Lester Lahr, her late father-in-law.

Of One Divided Mind: Fundamental Causes of the Nineteenth- Century Brethren Schism, 1850-1880 DANIEL WELLER Graduate Student Department of History Utah State University Abstract: Historical research involving the schism within the German Baptist Brethren Church in the 1880s has only been found within broad, general histories of the church. The explanations given by historians relating to the cause of the split have previously centered on individuals and the church publications between 1850 and 1883, and on contemporaries who argued among themselves about whether to adopt practices common among surrounding American religions and society. No known project has focused directly on the content within the publications as it relates to the way these brethren used the Bible and other religious and spiritual rhetoric to substantiate their arguments on either side.

    PROGRESSIVISM-A DEFINITION by Dale R. Stoffer Introduction In any movement the original ideals on which it was based are gradually forgotten or watered down by the passage of time. Slo­ gans and platforms which had a crisp, assertive ring become trite and stale. The centennial year of The Brethren Church provides an occasion to reexamine the convictions which caused six thousand men and women to leave or be expelled from the German Baptist Brethren Church (the present-day Church of the Brethren) and begin a new denomination. The purpose of this article is fourfold: (1) to give a historical overview of the events that led to the forma­ tion of The Brethren Church; (2) to look briefly at the areas of con­ tention among the various factions in the German Baptist Breth­ ren Church; (3) to distill the basic principles which gave the Pro­ gressive movement its distinctive character; and (4) to offer a defi­ nition and evaluation of Progressivism. Historical Overview It is necessary to return to the early 1800s to provide a founda­ tion for understanding the Progressive movement. Until the 1830s the Brethren! had generally been insulated from the influences of American society. Three factors in particular made this insulation possible: the retention of their German language and subculture during the early decades of the 1800s; the tendency of the agricul­ turally minded Brethren to migrate westward, frequently in groups, in search of better and cheaper land; the strong religious principles of simplicity and separation from the world. By the 18408, however, English had become the predominant language among the Brethren and their enclaves were increasingly being surrounded by American culture.
