She truly is my inspiration for putting me on this journey many years ago.” Lyllardya creates all her own artwork and hand prints onto natural materials in her home studio in Narrandera. “It’s really important to honour and value the stories depicted in my textile artwork while living on country to pay respects to my ancestors. I really don’t think I could do this anywhere else because it’s where I was raised and holds so much cultural meaning to me,” she said. Lyllardya runs a small label from her studio called Ngarru Miimi. At the moment most of her work is commissioned due to the lengthy process of print- ing her own artworks and constructing everything from scratch off Wiradjuri Country but she is slowly working towards a sustainable and ethical fashion label that is Indigenous led and operated from Narrandera. Ngarru Miimi was created as a re ection of the strength in identity, pride in culture and resilience of Aboriginal Peoples, with the power of kinship and connection to ancestral lands being the backbone of Aboriginal communities. It embodies these values and tells the story of traditional practices handed down from generation to generation. Lyllardya’s dream is to inspire all who wear Ngar- ru Miimi to feel the same sense of strength, pride and connection that she feels as Aboriginal people and to collectively showcase Aboriginal culture as a daily reminder that we are, and always will, stand strong on traditional lands. Ngarru Miimi translates to ‘honey sister’ and symbolises the lessons taught to Lyllardya growing up on her maternal grandmother’s country – the Nharrangura people of the Wiradjuri Nation. As a young girl Lyllardya’s grandmother would take her out to surrounding bushlands to collect native bush honey from hollowed out gumtrees bordering the banks of the Marrambidya river. These early lessons established the enduring importance and value of family, culture and connection to ancestral lands.
