Georgia Christian School Elementary Dress Code 2014-2015 Georgia Christian School Elementary Dress Code 2014-2015 DRESS AND GROOMING CODE Several principles affect the development of the GCS dress code. First, the Bible teaches that God is concerned with the condition of our heart. The way we choose to dress often reflects our attitudes and the condition of our heart. Dress can express respect or rebellion, care or lack of concern, modesty or indecency. Second, a student’s appearance can affect learning. In order to provide a more conducive educational environment, GCS must encourage appropriate dress and grooming. Third, some aspects of dress are simply cultural. Several issues in the GCS dress code are not moral or Christian in nature; some are merely issues of decorum and neatness. Finally, the dress code acknowledges the differences in styles appropriate for boys and girls and recognizes that these differences sometimes require that different rules apply. The following guidelines represent the school year expectations for dress and grooming. School dress code is in effect anytime a student is on the GCS campus for the school day or a school function or while representing GCS off campus. ALL STUDENTS: All students MUST wear the clothing apparel available through Lands’ End (to include the GCS logo). The only exception to this is in regards to pants. Only pants in the colors of khaki, navy blue, or black may be worn. They can be purchased elsewhere without the GCS logo. No jeans (or denim in any color) may be worn. Dress must be modest: clothing must not be so tight as to reveal physical features. Clothing with tears, rips, and holes are not allowed. Head/arm bands or any distracting items are not allowed. Any writing on clothing that is not part of the original design is not acceptable. No writing or drawing on the skin is allowed. No visible tattoos (permanent or temporary) are allowed. Pants should be neat, clean, unfrayed and worn with the waistband fitted at the waist. "Sagging Pants" are not appropriate for school wear. Also, pants should not be so long that they are being walked on. Chains are not allowed on pants or other clothing. Leggings and leotards may only be worn under regulation length skirts and dresses. Leggings, leotards and non-denim jeggings may only be worn under regulation length skirts and dresses. OUTERWEAR: Outerwear advertising alcohol, tobacco, demeaning slogans or musical performers that portray a philosophy contrary to the Christian values of GCS are not allowed. SHIRTS: All shirts should be long enough to cover the midriff and back when walking, standing, reaching, bending or sitting. During cooler weather students in K5-5th grades may wear shirts under GCS Spirit Wear that are not from Lands’ End provided they are white, black or gray. DRESSES, SKIRTS, AND SHORTS: The length of a dress, skirt, or shorts must not be more than 3 inches above the knee (Parents should take this into consideration when fitting children for Spirit Wear from Land’s End). Students in K3 through the 2nd grade are required to wear shorts under their skirts and dresses. Students in 3rd through 5th grades are encouraged to do the same. Tight dresses are not allowed. Undergarments should not be visible. SHOES: Shoes are to be worn at all times. They must be clean, neat and not showing signs of excessive wear. Flip-flops may not be worn. No backless shoes may be worn. Shoes with rollers in the sole of the shoe may not be worn. High heeled shoes are strongly discouraged during the school day. HATS AND CAPS: No hats and caps may be worn during the school day except for outdoor activities such as recess or physical education class. Hats and caps will be confiscated if worn at other times of the day. GROOMING AND JEWELRY: Hair should be clean, well groomed, and kept out of the eyes. Hair tails, multi- colored hair, and partially shaved heads are not appropriate. Extreme styles will not be permitted for boys or girls. When a young man’s hair length begins to turn upward, the hair is too long and needs to be cut. Hair must not extend below eyebrows or collar of a dress shirt. Hair may not be longer than the top of the ear. Sculpted hair or razor lines are not permitted. Boys’ hair should not be pulled behind the ears. Hair should be neatly styled using only hair colors natural to humans. Pony tails are not acceptable for young men. Parents and students know when hair is too long and should be cognizant in anticipating the next haircut. No studded bracelets or necklaces are allowed. Earrings worn by young men are not allowed at GCS. VIOLATION OF DRESS CODE: Students in violation of the dress code will not be allowed in class. The parent will be called immediately to take his/her child home to change clothes or to bring a change of clothing to school. The administration at GCS asks for your support in matters of dress and grooming. We also request that you comply with the dress code in regards to modesty when you come to school and to school activities. .

16 Textiles in defence* Richard A Scott Defence Clothing and Textiles Agency, Science and Technology Division, Flagstaff Road, Colchester, Essex CO2 7SS, UK 16.1 Introduction To be prepared for War is one of the most effectual means of preserving Peace (George Washington, 1790)1 Defence forces on land, sea, or air throughout the world are heavily reliant on tech- nical textiles of all types – whether woven, knitted, nonwoven, coated, laminated, or other composite forms. Technical textiles offer invaluable properties for military land forces in particular, who are required to move, live, survive and fight in hostile environments. They have to carry or wear all the necessities for comfort and sur- vival and thus need the most lightweight, compact, durable, and high performance personal clothing and equipment. The life-critical requirements for protecting indi- viduals from both environmental and battlefield threats have ensured that the major nations of the world expend significant resources in developing and providing the most advanced technical textiles for military use. 16.2 Historical background Military textile science is not new, and one of the earliest documented studies can probably be credited to Count Rumford, or Benjamin Thompson. Rumford was an American army colonel and scientist who issued a paper in 1792 entitled ‘Philo- sophical Transactions’, which reported on the importance of internally trapped air in a range of textile fabrics to the thermal insulation provided by those fabrics.2 He was awarded the Copley Medal for his paper, as the significance of his discovery was recognised immediately. * Copyright MOD (1997) DCTA, Colchester, Essex CO2 7SS 426 Handbook of technical textiles 16.2.1 Pre-Twentieth century Up until the end of the 19th century military land battles were fought at close quar- ters by individual engagements.

While not trying to be unkind to those who have adopted different standards, GCA has applied these guidelines in an effort to standardize and simplify our school dress code while following biblical principles. While the Bible does not stipulate how we should dress, it does provide guiding principles. The expectations for GCA’s Standard of Dress are designed to reflect three guiding principles:

  • Principles of Design
Principles of Design Balance Proportion/Scale Emphasis Rhythm Introduction The principles of design are essential to the development and production of clothing used by individuals and families around the world. Each principle has a specific role in creating an aesthetically pleasing garment or ensemble. The principles of design consist of: balance, proportion (also referred to as scale), emphasis, and rhythm. When a garment or ensemble uses the elements and principles of design to create a visual unity, harmony is achieved. Garments often integrate more than one principle, while drawing from the elements of design to create a cohesive look. The following discussion will present background information on each of the principles of design and applications to clothing design and construction. Balance According to Wolfe (2011) balance implies that there is an equilibrium or uniformity among the parts of a design (p. 205). To achieve balance, a garment or ensemble should have equal visual weight throughout the design. The use of structural features, added embellishments, or decorations to a garment contribute to the appearance of a garment or ensemble being balanced or not. A clothing designer can utilize surface designs on fabric to construct a garment creating visual balance. Further, color, line, and texture can impact the balance of a design. For example, cool and light colors have less visual weight than dark, warm colors. If an individual is wearing a small amount of a dark, warm color it can be balanced out with a larger amount of cool, light colors. Balance used in clothing design can be categorized into two groups: Formal and Informal Balance.
