16 Textiles in defence* Richard A Scott Defence Clothing and Textiles Agency, Science and Technology Division, Flagstaff Road, Colchester, Essex CO2 7SS, UK 16.1 Introduction To be prepared for War is one of the most effectual means of preserving Peace (George Washington, 1790)1 Defence forces on land, sea, or air throughout the world are heavily reliant on tech- nical textiles of all types – whether woven, knitted, nonwoven, coated, laminated, or other composite forms. Technical textiles offer invaluable properties for military land forces in particular, who are required to move, live, survive and fight in hostile environments. They have to carry or wear all the necessities for comfort and sur- vival and thus need the most lightweight, compact, durable, and high performance personal clothing and equipment. The life-critical requirements for protecting indi- viduals from both environmental and battlefield threats have ensured that the major nations of the world expend significant resources in developing and providing the most advanced technical textiles for military use. 16.2 Historical background Military textile science is not new, and one of the earliest documented studies can probably be credited to Count Rumford, or Benjamin Thompson. The paper draws on findings from two studies, both done in a suburban school system deemed "average" on a variety of educational and socioeconomic indicators. In each study, samples of students stratified by gender and achievement level were interviewed individually about topics addressed in social studies. Analyses focused not just on the accuracy of responses, but on their qualitative nuances that provided insights into students' ideas, including their misconceptions. Responses across grades K-3 suggest that students' knowledge and thinking about Native Americans tends to proceed through the following stages:(1) no knowledge;(2) cartoon stereotypes of the appearance or behavior of Indians; (3) Indians as the first people in America, wilderness survivors, and teachers of and learners from the Pilgrims and other early Europeans; (4) knowledge about Indians' lives and cultures and empathy with them as noble ecologists and victims of European aggression and greed; and (5) distancing and loss of empathy as attention shifts to the pioneers and the westward expansion of the United States. -

Grill Room, 19th Hole, Patio - Proper golf attire, casual attire, or better for men, women and children. No denim*, short shorts, cut-offs, strapless tops, tank tops, or shirts without collars. Gentlemen should remove hats in the Clubhouse. * Denim is not permitted anywhere on the Hinsdale Golf Club campus, with the exception of the Paddle Tennis Facility. Guests should be notified of these rules in advance. GOLF ATTIRE: Proper golf attire is required at all times while using the course and practice facilities. Golf attire should be consistent with accepted standards of propriety and good taste. Denim is not permitted anywhere on the Hinsdale Golf Club campus, with the exception of the Paddle Tennis Facility. Examples of improper attire for men, women and children are: Jeans, shorts that are too long or short (shorts should be worn below mid-thigh and above the knee); cutoff shorts; strapless tops; tank tops; shirts with neither sleeves nor collars (full coverage shirts with either sleeves or collars are appropriate for women only). Other examples of improper attire include: high top shoes; caps with visors pointing other than forward; and shirttails worn outside of pants, unless they are made to be worn that way. Mock turtlenecks are considered collared shirts. The golf staff has been authorized to enforce the above standards. Principles of Design Balance Proportion/Scale Emphasis Rhythm Introduction The principles of design are essential to the development and production of clothing used by individuals and families around the world. Each principle has a specific role in creating an aesthetically pleasing garment or ensemble. The principles of design consist of: balance, proportion (also referred to as scale), emphasis, and rhythm. When a garment or ensemble uses the elements and principles of design to create a visual unity, harmony is achieved. Garments often integrate more than one principle, while drawing from the elements of design to create a cohesive look. The following discussion will present background information on each of the principles of design and applications to clothing design and construction. Balance According to Wolfe (2011) balance implies that there is an equilibrium or uniformity among the parts of a design (p. 205). To achieve balance, a garment or ensemble should have equal visual weight throughout the design. The use of structural features, added embellishments, or decorations to a garment contribute to the appearance of a garment or ensemble being balanced or not. A clothing designer can utilize surface designs on fabric to construct a garment creating visual balance. Further, color, line, and texture can impact the balance of a design. For example, cool and light colors have less visual weight than dark, warm colors. If an individual is wearing a small amount of a dark, warm color it can be balanced out with a larger amount of cool, light colors. Balance used in clothing design can be categorized into two groups: Formal and Informal Balance. -

The objective of this study was to examine the suitability of laser cutting technique application on denim casual wear using pucuk rebung motif. Several experiementations of laser cutting applied on pucuk rebung motifs were conducted on various types of denim fabrics to identify strength, durability while maintaining the aesthetic of pucuk rebung motif on denim casual wear. Four denim casual wears were designed with the placement of the the motifs on different areas of the fabric. Pucuk rebung motifs were simplified to allow the application of the laset cutting on the motif. A post test was performed to verify which design that would preferred most by the target audience. All respondents agreed that the used of laser cutting on pucuk rebung motif applied on denim casual wear was appropriate and able to create an interesting surface design. Results from this study proved that traditional Malay motifs could be applied and enhanced into casual wear using laser cutting as an innovative way uplifting the traditional motif on contemporary design besides enhancing the unique Malaysian culture via fashion.
