Natural Product Communications Vol. 4 (12) 2009 Published online (www.naturalproduct.us) Editorial In Honor of the 72nd Birthday of Professor Francesco De Simone It is our great privilege and pleasure to introduce this issue, which is dedicated to Prof. Francesco De Simone, Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Science, University of Salerno, on the occasion of his 72nd birthday. Prof. De Simone has made many outstanding contributions to the field of natural products science, particularly for the conservation of biodiversity through drug discovery. His research has been based on various aspect of modern pharmacognosy, offering valuable contributions to phytochemistry, food chemistry, and, more recently, pharmaceutical technology applied to herbal drug preparations. During his distinguished and productive career, spanning over 45 years, Francesco De Simone has either authored or co- authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 15 book chapters, some patent applications, and a great number of contributions in congress proceedings. Prof. De Simone, during his research activity, has paid particular attention to the enhancement of the value of traditional medicine in Latin American countries, including the conservation of their cultural and natural value. His efforts have represented an excellent opportunity to improve collaboration and to re-enforce networks between Italian and Latin American research groups. This issue, on the occasion of his 72nd birthday on June 27, 2009, represents a tribute to his outstanding scientific contributions and an opportunity to express congratulations and best wishes from all of us, colleagues and friends. Agrawal Natural Product Communications Vol. 4 (12) 2009 Published online (www.naturalproduct.us) Preface It is a pleasure for me, as a colleague and friend, to send wishes to Prof. Francesco De Simone on the occasion of his 72ns birthday. The first time I met Prof. De Simone was in October 1969, when I entered, as a student, the Institute of Medicinal and Toxicological Chemistry of the University of Naples. A strong friendship was quickly created between us: I have always appreciated the ecleptic knowledge of Prof. De Simone and his open minded vision of the world. From the beginning of the 1980s and for almost 20 years, we have been collaborating in very productive scientific work, studying the phytochemistry of medicinal plants from all over the world, but mainly from South America. During this period, mainly due to his efforts, a generation of highly able scientists has been created operating in the field of natural products. Apart from the high scientific value of Prof. De Simone as a chemist, I also recognize his ability in organizing and promoting science. From the end of the 1980s Prof. De Simone has been the main player in the activation of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Salerno, which is now a well organized and active Faculty. Prof. De Simone also deserves great credit for his efforts as Dean in the periods 1994-1999 and 2004-2008. Prof. Francesco De Simone’s research has focused on all major aspects of natural product science, including isolation, structure elucidation, and the biological evaluation of natural compounds in medicinal plants, foods and cosmetics. To Francesco, a very outstanding scientist, sincere thanks for his contribution to Phytochemistry!     New Markers in the MycoTOX Profile We are happy to announce the addition of four new mycotoxin markers to our MycoTOX Profile. The test now includes 11 mycotoxins from 40 species of mold, making it by far the most comprehensive and competitively priced mycotoxin test available. It also still more sensitive and accurate than other tests available, because we use LC/MS/MS technology. Here is an overview of the four new mycotoxin markers: Gliotoxin Gliotoxin (GTX) is produced by the mold genus Aspergillus. Aspergillus spreads in the environment by releasing conidia which are capable of infiltrating the small alveolar airways of individuals. In order to evade the body’s defenses Aspergillus releases Gliotoxin to inhibit the immune system. One of the targets of Gliotoxin is PtdIns (3,4,5) P3. This results in the downregulation of phagocytic immune defense, which can lead to the exacerbation of polymicrobial infections. Gliotoxin impairs the activation of T-cells and induces apoptosis in monocytes and in monocyte-derived dendritic cells. These impairments can lead to multiple neurological syndromes. Mycophenolic Acid Mycophenolic Acid (MPA) produced by the Penicillium fungus. MPA is an immunosuppressant which inhibits the proliferation of B and T lymphocytes. MPA exposure can increase the risk of opportunistic infections such as Clostridia and Candida. MPA is associated with miscarriage and congenital malformations when the woman is exposed in pregnancy. Dihydrocitrinone Dihydrocitrinone is a metabolite of Citrinin (CTN), which is a mycotoxin that is produced by the mold species Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Monascus. CTN exposure can lead to nephropathy, because of its ability to increase permeability of mitochondrial membranes in the kidneys.

Designate a “Show Bag” with all your items. We provided a checklist for costume pieces in the Costume Book to make it easier. We recommend making your own checklist for Hip Hop Costumes. Check these lists before coming to the show and when leaving the theater every time. – Write names on all costume pieces, tights and shoes. – Please plan ahead and be on time. – Costumes should be clean and unwrinkled. – Sewing is always preferred over pinning when making any costume fixes/adjustments. – Underwear should not be worn under tights if they are visible or show lines. If the audience can’t see them under your costume, no one needs to know. – Please do not wear any jewelry that doesn’t go with the costume. Neat nail polish as part of your hip hop style / finale costume is fine, but no nail polish in matching­costumed classes. – Please plan meals accordingly. Pack a water bottle and small snacks.     Research Toxic effects of mycotoxins in humans M. Peraica,1 B. RadicÂ,2 A. LucicÂ,3 & M. Pavlovic 4 Mycotoxicoses are diseases caused by mycotoxins, i.e. secondary metabolites of moulds. Although they occur more frequently in areas with a hot and humid climate, favourable for the growth of moulds, they can also be found in temperate zones. Exposure to mycotoxins is mostly by ingestion, but also occurs by the dermal and inhalation routes. Mycotoxicoses often remain unrecognized by medical professionals, except when large numbers of people are involved. The present article reviews outbreaks of mycotoxicoses where the mycotoxic etiology of the disease is supported by mycotoxin analysis or identification of mycotoxin-producing fungi. Epidemiological, clinical and histological findings (when available) in outbreaks of mycotoxicoses resulting from exposure to aflatoxins, ergot, trichothecenes, ochratoxins, 3-nitropropionic acid, zearalenone and fumonisins are discussed.
