    Professor Hermione LEE MA, MPHIL, FRSL, FBA, AAAS, CBE President of Wolfson College, Oxford, is a teacher, academic administrator, biographer, critic and broadcaster. She grew up in London (her father was a G.P. in central London) where she went to school at the French Lycée in London, the City of London School for Girls, and Queen’s College. She took a First class degree in English Literature from St Hilda’s College Oxford in 1968 and an M.Phil from St Cross College in 1970. She has taught at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, at the University of Liverpool (where she was given an Honorary DLitt in 2002) and at the University of York, from 1977 to 1998, where she had a personal Chair in the Department of English and Related Literature and received an Honorary DLitt in 2007. From1998 to 2008 she was the Goldsmiths’ Professor of English Literature and Fellow of New College (the first woman to hold this Chair and the first Professorial Fellow of the College) at the University of Oxford. In 1998 she was elected President of Wolfson College, Oxford. Her books include The Novels of Virginia Woolf (1977), her study of the Anglo-Irish novelist Elizabeth Bowen (1981, revised 1999), a short critical book, the first published in Britain, on Philip Roth (1982), a critical biography of the American novelist Willa Cather, Willa Cather: A Life Saved Up (1989, reissued by Virago in 2008), a major biography of Virginia Woolf (1996), a collection of essays on biography and autobiography, Body Parts: Essays on Life-Writing (2005) (published in 2005 by Princeton University Press in a shorter version as Virginia Woolf’s Nose ) and a biography of Edith Wharton (Chatto & Windus and Knopf, 2007, longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and for the American Quill Awards, shortlisted for the James Tait Black Award and winner of the English Speaking Union Ambassador Award.) What did she write?’ As I was struggling to answer in a way that would make sense for this teenager who, though a reader, had not been exposed to much else than contemporary young adult literature, she added that she had noticed on my daughter’s desk a notebook with a reproduction on its cover of Vanessa Bell’s art work for the original edition of To The Lighthouse, published by Hogarth Press in 1927. With simple–and I hoped convincing–words, I painted a portrait of the writer, explained why I was attracted to her work, which novels and essays were my favorites, and ended by a cursory summary of To the Lighthouse.

    OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 09/19/2016, SPi 16 Second Thoughts of a Biographer Michael Ignatieff Biographers work with a variety of complex motives, some of which surface only when their work is done. These days biographers come to bury their Caesars as often as they come to praise them. In my case, my ostensible motive was to praise, to remember a friendship, and to honour a life I had witnessed, at least over the last ten years of its span. It was, as critics have pointed out, a biographical essay, more than a biography, a preliminary report written in the last year of his life, and published in the year following his death. He had asked me to do it, after all, and so I was honouring a promise and fulfilling an obligation of which I was proud. Selecting me as his biographer was a validation of me and so I had to take care not to turn my work into compensatory validation of him. I owed an obligation to him, but I owed an equal obligation to be truthful. While I erased my own presence from the book, as a biographer should, the result was the tacit record of a friendship, one of the most important in my life. Because the project was personal, seen from my perspective, other friends, often more important to him, did not see ‘their’ Isaiah in mine. When the book was published, I was sur­ prised to be told that I had missed some essential story or feature of his character. Download date: 01. Oct. 2021 Introduction This thesis analyses Anglo-American criticism of literary biography during the late twentieth century from within and outside the academy1. It moves on to discuss the work of three contemporary British biographers in the context of recent debate about the genre: Claire Tomalin, an independent biographer; Hermione Lee, a lifelong academic who writes biography for the general and academic reader; and Richard Holmes who has had a foot in both camps having been both an independent biographer and an academic. All three are understood as more traditional biographers who abide by what Hermione Lee calls “some inevitable conventions” (Introduction 123)2. These conventions she gets out in the following passage: Most biography moves forward and onward, sets the main figure in its context, mixes the plot with accounts of the subject’s work, of historical complexities or of subsidiary characters, and uses description and observation, documentary sources, witness testimony, peripheral materials, and first-hand knowledge to construct the story.
