The show will take place September 14th (the exact day of the actual Harvest Moon) at Painted Turtle Camp in Lake Hughes, California. “Included with each ticket is an all-star celebrity chef picnic cooked and served by Southern California’s top chefs,” reads an announcement, “and a beer and wine tasting from select California Breweries and Wineries.” Subscribe Tickets on on-sale Friday at 10:00 am PST and will be $250 each, plus fees. Kids under 10 will be allowed in for free. For more information, check out the official Harvest Moon: A Gathering website. Young just wrapped up a European tour with Promise of the Real where he joined Bob Dylan onstage for the irst time since 1994. There’s no information about whether or not he’ll be playing solo at Harvest Moon, but Promise of the Real are booked the day of the show at the Outlaw Music Festival on Virginia Beach, Virginia. The show will mark the first time he’s raised funds for the Bridge School with a concert since the annual Bridge School Benefit ended in 2016. Norah Jones played the event five times between 2005 and 2016, but this will be Father John Misty’s first time helping out the organization. The African/Latin American musical collective Masanga is also on the bill. The only other show on Young’s public calendar is Farm Aid on September 21st in East Troy Wisconsin on September 21st, but he recently recorded a new album with Crazy Horse and he’s promised to promote it with a tour..

FARM AID: A CASE STUDY OF A CHARITY ROCK ORGANIZATION by Andrew M. Palen A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee December 2016 ABSTRACT FARM AID: A CASE STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF A CHARITY ROCK ORGANIZATION by Andrew M. Palen The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor David Pritchard This study examines the impact that the non-profit organization Farm Aid has had on the farming industry, policy, and the concert realm known as charity rock. This study also examines how the organization has maintained its longevity. By conducting an evaluation on Farm Aid and its history, the organization’s messaging and means to communicate, a detailed analysis of the past media coverage on Farm Aid from 1985-2010, and a phone interview with Executive Director Carolyn Mugar, I have determined that Farm Aid’s impact is complex and not clear.

  • Death, Travel and Pocahontas the Imagery on Neil Young's Album
Hugvísindasvið Death, Travel and Pocahontas The imagery on Neil Young’s album Rust Never Sleeps Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Hans Orri Kristjánsson September 2008 Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Enskuskor Death, Travel and Pocahontas The imagery on Neil Young’s album Rust Never Sleeps Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Hans Orri Kristjánsson Kt.: 260180-2909 Leiðbeinandi: Sveinn Yngvi Egilsson September 2008 Abstract The following essay, “Death, Travel and Pocahontas,” seeks to interpret the imagery on Neil Young’s album Rust Never Sleeps. The album was released in July 1979 and with it Young was venturing into a dialogue of folk music and rock music. On side one of the album the sound is acoustic and simple, reminiscent of the folk genre whereas on side two Young is accompanied by his band, The Crazy Horse, and the sound is electric, reminiscent of the rock genre. By doing this, Young is establishing the music and questions of genre and the interconnectivity between folk music and rock music as one of the theme’s of the album. Young explores these ideas even further in the imagery of the lyrics on the album by using popular culture icons. The title of the album alone symbolizes the idea of both death and mortality, declaring that originality is transitory. Furthermore he uses recurring images, such as death, to portray his criticism on the music business and lack of originality in contemporary musicians. Ideas of artistic freedom are portrayed through images such as nature and travel using both ships and road to symbolize the importance of re-invention.

  • Willie Nelson and the Mom and Pop Grocery Aid Concert
Willie Nelson and the Mom and Pop Grocery Aid Concert I’m sure you’ve seen or heard of special events to aid suffering farmers. Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid concerts are my favorites. A few choruses of “It’s a Bloody Mary Morning” sung in a Midwest football stadium and millions of dollars go to help farmers. I always wait for Willie to say that all we need to do is legalize marijuana and solve the farm problem, but Willie understands enough economics to know that wouldn’t work either. The increase in supply would drive prices down to near zero. This is the problem in U.S. agriculture. We’re too good at it. As supplies increase, prices fall, and with inelastic demand lower prices lead to lower revenue. In order to stay in business, you have to cut cost, and in agriculture that usually means getting bigger. Say goodbye to the small family farm. Unlike normal people, economists don’t see a problem in agriculture. That’s because economic losses in a market economy serve the same purpose as profits. A loss acts as a signal that you need to find another line of work. Even normal people recognize this in other industries. We don’t have celebrities coming to the aid of mom and pop grocery stores driven out of business by the new supermarket. I’ve never heard of a single Grocery Store Aid concert, or Barber Aid, or Dry Cleaner Aid, or Restaurant Aid. We don’t mourn the replacement of full service auto mechanics by Jiffy Lube and other specialty chains.
