HUMAN RIGHTS QUARTERLY The Normativity of Human Rights Is Self-Evident Amitai Etzioni* ABSTRACT Attempts to justify human rights in terms of other sources of normativity unwittingly weaken the case of human rights. Instead these rights should be treated as moral causes that speak to us directly, as one of those rare precepts that are self-evident. All will hear self-evident moral claims un- less they have been severely distracted, and even these persons will hear these claims once they are engaged in open moral dialogue. Oddly, the strongest support for treating human rights as self-evident may well be a consequentialist argument. I. INTRODUCTION Numerous attempts have been made to justify human rights in terms of other sources of normativity, or values that can be used to justify these rights. This article suggests that such attempts unwittingly weaken the case of human rights and that instead these rights should be treated as moral causes that speak to us directly, as one of those rare precepts that is self-evident.1 Sug- gesting that human rights should be treated as self-evident does not deny * Amitai Etzioni is University Professor at The George Washington University where he is also director of the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies. Studia Gilsoniana 2 (2013): 21-32 | ISSN 2300-0066 Peter Mango Institute for the Psychological Sciences Arlington, Virginia, USA MACINTYRE’S GILSONIAN PREFERENCE “No philosopher can know that he is a Thomist unless he also be an historian.” - Étienne Gilson Étienne Gilson claimed more people were Thomist because they were Catholic than became Catholic because they were first Thomist. However true, the latter class is usually more interesting. Instances include Mortimer Adler, Jacques Maritain, Walker Percy – and Alasdair MacIn- tyre. In 1988 Alasdair MacIntyre had announced his preference for Thomism as a philosophical tradition after a famously long and varied trajectory. The trajectory included stretches as: an Oxford tutor in classics; a convinced Barthian; an analytic thinker co-publishing with Anthony Flew; a student of Hegel; a New Left Marxist; a student of medieval lan- guages (e.g., Old Norse); a student of phenomenology and psychoanalysis, respectively; an anthropological sociologist influenced by Franz Steiner, Mary Douglas, and Evans-Pritchard; a neo-Aristotelian; and someone dis- playing a persistent interest in Wittgenstein. By the time he “landed” over two decades ago, however, MacIntyre was not a product of mere faddism. The themes MacIntyre presupposes in his work have occupied him throughout his professional career. Nor has he abandoned all the stages listed above (indeed he retains the last five synthetically). A Thomist once remarked to me that it seemed, given his late arri- val, MacIntyre was a “baby” as far as Thomism is concerned. Justly noted 22 Peter Mango or not, I pointed out MacIntyre is not a “baby” as far as philosophy is con- cerned. -

Augustine and Rousseau on the Politics of Confession by Taylor Putnam A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Taylor Putnam Abstract This thesis looks at the widely acknowledged but largely unexplored relationship between Augustine’s Confessions and Rousseau’s Confessions. In particular, it argues that Rousseau’s text demonstrates an indebtedness to both Augustine’s treatment of time within eternity and the political figure of the Christian preacher. By first comparing their competing interpretations of original sin as told in Genesis and then tracing those interpretations through the autobiographical narratives of each text, it is argued that Augustine and Rousseau both offer their lives as examples of their respective understandings of human nature. Further still, Rousseau’s attempt to supplant Augustine’s autobiography with his own sees the Augustinian preacher reformulated into the figure of the solitary walker. Introduction Language and reflection often pull against each other. Ordinary ways of talking appear to commit speakers to ontologies that may, upon reflection, be deemed problematic for a variety of empirical, metaphysical, and/or epistemological reasons. The use of moral discourse, for example, appears to commit speakers to the existence of obligation, evil, desert, praiseworthiness (and so on), while metaethical reflection raises a host of doubts about how such properties could exist in the world and how we could have access to them if they did. One extreme solution to the tension is to give up reflection—to become like those “honest gentlemen” of England, as Hume described them, who “being always employ’d in domestic affairs, or amusing themselves in common recreations, have carried their thoughts very little beyond those objects” (Treatise 1.4.7.14). Hume sounds a touch envious of the unreflective idyll, but the very fact that he is penning a treatise on human nature shows that this is not a solution available to him; and, likewise, the very fact that you are reading this chapter shows that it’s unlikely to be a solution for you. Another extreme solution to the tension is to give up language—not in toto, of course, but selectively: to stop using those elements of discourse that are deemed to have unacceptable commitments. How radical this eliminativism is will depend on the nature of the problem. -

The Moral Basis of Family Relationships in the plays of Shakespeare and his Contemporaries: a Study in Renaissance Ideas. A submission for the degree of doctor of philosophy by Stephen David Collins. The Department of History of The University of York. June, 2016. ABSTRACT. Families transact their relationships in a number of ways. Alongside and in tension with the emotional and practical dealings of family life are factors of an essentially moral nature such as loyalty, gratitude, obedience, and altruism. Morality depends on ideas about how one should behave, so that, for example, deciding whether or not to save a brother's life by going to bed with his judge involves an ethical accountancy drawing on ideas of right and wrong. It is such ideas that are the focus of this study. It seeks to recover some of ethical assumptions which were in circulation in early modern England and which inform the plays of the period. A number of plays which dramatise family relationships are analysed from the imagined perspectives of original audiences whose intellectual and moral worlds are explored through specific dramatic situations. Plays are discussed as far as possible in terms of their language and plots, rather than of character, and the study is eclectic in its use of sources, though drawing largely on the extensive didactic and polemical writing on the family surviving from the period. Three aspects of family relationships are discussed: first, the shifting one between parents and children, second, that between siblings, and, third, one version of marriage, that of the remarriage of the bereaved. -

Journal of Moral Theology, Vol. 10, No. 1 (2021): 46–72 An Augustinian Correction to a Faulty Option: The Politics of Salt and Light Anthony Crescio INCE ITS PUBLICATION IN 2017, Rod Dreher’s The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation has given rise to a cottage industry, including a wide range of S publications on the subject (either in support of or against) and conferences across the country. To be sure, a Christian perspective fully supports many elements in Dreher’s thought, like his calls for homes to become places of spiritual learning and growth,1 that institu- tions of Christian education take seriously their role in Christian for- mation,2 and the Church undergo a ressourcement type of renewal in all facets of its life.3 However, it is in the last area of ecclesiology where Dreher’s option ultimately fails in several ways because he does not grasp the full import of the sacramental ontology. While he rightly advocates a need for recovering it, he falls short in implementing it.4 His is, put simply, a failure of the imagination which has disastrous consequences for his understanding of how the church ought to engage in the political sphere. In order to demonstrate this failure, I adopt Dreher’s ressourcement methodology5 by engaging Augustine of Hippo as the primary inter- locutor and proceeding by way of four main steps. First, I discuss three ways Dreher’s work represents a failure of imagination. With the sec- ond step, I lay out Augustine’s sacramental metaphysics and corre- sponding ecclesiology. -
