Inspired by our Patron, St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Center Moriches seeks to bring the light of to a world in need, so that as Christ has done, we may also do. From the celebration of the Eucharist, we are sent forth to serve God and neighbor through ministries of formation, education and outreach. —Mission Statement

A Mother’s Day Blessing Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you give life and care for your Church.

Bless these women, as we celebrate this day in their honor. May they be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor and appreciate them with a spirit of profound respect.

May the example of Mary, mother of , inspire them to live their vocation as Christian mothers and call their children to faith. Guide and protect them in challenging times and help them to con- tinue to trust in you all the days of their life.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. John the Evangelist www.sjecm.org Page 2 May 9, 2021 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK “...He loved us.” MAKING THE FIRST MOVE Dear Parish Family: I find myself reading a great deal about prayer these days. I pray every day but for some reason more than one book has come my way (or through my Amazon cart!). Most of them have been from writers about spirituality and read more about the “how-to” both practically and spiritually in prayer. While I would not describe any of the book as hard reads, the are spiritually hard. They remind me, again and again, how much I have to learn. Maybe when it comes to prayer you can get caught up in what needs to be done. As a priest I pray the Divine Office to begin with and have other things I read, recite, and return to again and again. I make the prayer about what I need to do. If I sit here, if begin with this prayer, if end each day listening to this, and so on. These things are worthy of consideration. However, they easily become attractions and distractions. I know what I need to do and every book on prayer—those I’m reading now and those that I have ever read– reminds me of the same thing. Create the space for God to work in you. Wow—am I terrible at this! I have much to get done. I need to make sure I get through this or finish this novena or that devotion or light that candle and so on and so on. The problem becomes that prayer is more about what doing and trying to make happen. The readings this weekend and last (particularly the second reading today) remind us of our need simply to be (to remain) in the presence of God. We do not need to do anything to get God’s attention. St. John tells us that God loved us first! It is not about what we need to do. God has already made the first move. You (and I) are the Beloved of God. I am leery to write the next few sentences. Know that I only offer them as considerations and in no way as a “you should be doing this”. The first consideration is the need for silence. When you go to pray, be quiet at first. Yes there are things to pray, to read, to consider. Please do these things. Before you do, though, be quiet. It is part of the reason we try to call everyone to silence before Mass. Take some deep breaths, pray a mantra (something like “O God come to my assistance” or “Be still and know that I am God” or even just the word “Peace”). Allow your mind to be cleared of the worries and fears, distractions and darkness. You will create the room God needs to enter, to make the first move. Then your prayer is simply a response. Second, consider this from The Spiritual Exercises. As you begin your prayer time, kneel or sit down or stand or look at the or some image—whatever you need to do. Before you say, read, pray a word, stop and imagine how happy God is that you are taking time with Him. Yes, you! See the joy in the Father’s face (or in Jesus or in the Spirit) that you have made it easy for them to make their move. Then, begin your prayer. Again, our prayer becomes a response to God’s love for us. We gather in the midst of two times that can help us respond to this move of God. First, we turn to Mary, our Mother, particularly on this Mother’s Day. She accompanies like any good mom. Recently, Francis said, “She listens as Mother. Just like, and more than, every good mother, Mary protects us from danger, she is concerned about us even when we are focused on our own matters and lose a sense of the way, and endanger not only our health, but also our salvation. Mary is there, praying for us, praying for those who do not pray. Praying with us. Why? Because she is our Mother.” Let us turn to Mary, particularly in this month of May, particularly in this time of pandemic and seek her intercession that we might ever more see the signs of God’s love for each one of us. Second, we move closer to the Feast of praying for the Spirit to touch and transform each of our lives. We will begin the Novena to the Holy Spirit and prepare our selves and our Church for the day of Pentecost. Come Holy Spirit! Our Lady Queen of Apostles, pray for us! St. John the Evangelist www.sjecm.org Page 3 May 9, 2021 PRAYER AND WORSHIP SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION This Thursday, May 13, 2021 Masses Wednesday Evening: 5:00 p.m. Thursday: 7:00 a.m. + 12 Noon + 7:30 p.m. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will still take place on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

Discussion Questions 1.Do you listen to the Holy Spirit on a regular basis, or just now and then? How does the Spirit speak to you? Are there some areas that are off limits or do you invite the Holy Spirit into every part of your life?

2. How was “the love of God revealed to us?” If Jesus had not come into the world, what would you know about God?

3. The one thing Jesus asks of us is that we love our neighbor. How would you rate this assignment on a “difficulty” scale from 1-10? Explain. What gift does God give you to help with this assignment
