Sawantwadi – Goa - Malvan – Vijaydurg – Nate SAWANTWADI – GOA - MALVAN – VIJAYDURG – NATE Day 1: Early morning departure from a convenient location or your doorstep. Stop for breakfast at Nagothane, the gateway to the Alphonso Belt. Proceed to Lord Parshuram Temple, Parashurama a Brahmin, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, belongs to the Treta yug, and is the son of Jamadagani and Renuka. Parashu means axe, hence his name literally means Rama-with-the-axe. He received an axe after undertaking a terrible penance to please Shiva, from whom he learned the methods of warfare and other skills. He fought the advancing ocean back thus saving the lands of Konkan and Malabar. The coastal area of Kerala state along with the Konkan region, i.e., coastal Maharashtra and Karnataka, is also sometimes called Parashurama Kshetra (Parashurama's country). Parashurama is said to be a "warrior Brahman", the first warrior saint. His mother is descended from the Kshatriya Suryavansham clan that ruled Ayodhya and Lord Rama also belonged to. Lunch. Check – in at Dwarka at Sawantwadi. (BLED) Day 2: Have Breakfast and proceed to Goa Sightseeing. Stay at Sawantwadi. (BLED) Day 3: Have Breakfast and proceed to Amboli sightseeing . Enjoy the night with a small cultural programme and have Moonlight Dinner. Stay at Sawantwadi. (BLED) Day 4:Have Breakfast and proceed to Malvan, Tarkarli. On route also visit Redi Ganpati, is located approximately 30 km fromVengurla. The town in which this temple is situated contains manganese mines and the Ganpati Idol was found in one of the mines near Rewati port in 1976. The ganpati Idol is in a sitting position and approximately 15 meters in height. There is a small rocky beach behind the temple. Fort Tiracol, is on a big hill near the seashore. Though it is in Goa, people visiting Sindhudurga are able to see it. Fort is situated at the mouth of Redi creek. Towards the south of the fort is the seashore. Redi village is well known for its manganese business. Otavne river meets here to sea and hence the area of beach is very broad. And because of this otavne river, one natural boarder is maintained in Sindhudurg and Goa. From Tiracol Fort you can see beautiful view of Otavne river where meets sea. Vetoba Temple, It is a very ancient temple in Aravali, near Vengurla. It is a Temple of Lord Vetoba, who is deity of Aravali people. The Temple is surrounded by coconut plantation. Also farming is done in Temple vicinity which adds greenery to the surrounding area of the Temple. Local believes that Lord Vetoba wear Kolhapuri big chappals and roam in the village at night and these Lord's footwares are kept in the Temple which are amazing and not seen before. Check-in at Tarkarli. Stay at Malvan (Tarkarli). (BLED) Day 5: Have Breakfast and proceed to Devbaug Sangam. Have Lunch and proceed for Scuba Diving & Snorkelling. Visit Jay Ganesh Temple, Situated at Malvan Jay Ganesh temple is now on a ‘must see’ list of tourists. The temple is built by Shri Jayantrao Salgaonkar, an astrologer of repute and creator of very popular almanac ‘Kalnirnay’. Situated in Medha locality of Malvan on ancestral family land of Salgaonkars, the temple has been constructed as per the holy principles of temple architecture in India. Shri Jayantrao personally supervised the construction. The presiding deity in the temple is Lord Ganesha, much revered Elephant God of Maharashtra. The idol is of pure gold. This main idol in the sanctum sanctorum is in the traditional pose with Riddhi- Siddhi (consorts of Lord) on both sides. Siddhi is holding Dhol (Indian traditional percussion instrument) and sword in her hand while Riddhi has pen and paper in her hands. The hall has eight idols of Ganesh carved in the ceiling. One gets a very comfortable feeling of Lord Ganesh looking benevolently from all the eight directions at his disciple. The interior of the temple is very rich and has used soothing colors. A five- day annual festival of Ganesh Jayanti is celebrated on 4th Day of Magh (month in Hindu Calendar). This day is also the anniversary day of the temple.The speciality of this temple’s architecture can be seen on the early morning of Makar Sankranti (14th or 15th of January). On this day the early sunrays fall directly on the idol and one can see the glittering and shining Ganesha bathed in sunlight. Jayantrao Salgaonkar has named this Ganesha as Jay Ganesha so that the Ganesha may bestow ‘Jay’ (success) on his disciples. Take a stroll in Malvan Market. Back to Hotel. Dinner. Stay at Malvan (Tarkarli). (BLED) Day 6 : Have Breakfast and proceed to Kunkeshwar, This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan. Every year a huge celebration takes place on the occasion of Mahashivratri, which keeps religious beliefs in constant sight of the multitudes. During the festival a large number of devotees throng this place with their families and friends. This vigilant Shiva deity bestows blessings on everyone who surrenders to its feet. Fort Vijaydurg, which literally means "Victory Fort", is a fort built by Shivaji in the Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra. The main purpose of building this fort was to defend the shoreline on the Arabian Sea. This fort is a complex in itself, having a commander's house and three lines of defences. The three fortified walls stand proud and tested by time and the unforgiving sea. Stay at Nate. (BLED) Day 7 : Breakfast at 7.30 am. Proceed towards Mumbai. It is bounded by Arabian Sea on the West, on the North by Ratnagiri district, on the East by Kolhapur district and part of Karnataka, on South by the S tate of Goa. Sindhudurg district, which was, till recently, that is May l, 198 1, southern part of Ratnag iri district and forms a part of the region, classically known as the ' Southern Mahratta Country'. It was first studie d by Wilkinson ( 1 8 71) and Foote ( 1876). In subsequent years, sporadic papers, comprising essentially of preliminary r e ports on the Ge ology of r e stricte d areas, h ave b een publishe d. Pascoe (1922) reported the occurrence of Kaolin near Malvan. Iyer (1939) reported the occurrence of clay f rom Vengurla suitable for c e ramic purpose s. Howeve r, n o attempt has been made to study in detail the mineralogy and industrial propertie s of clays exposed in the s e parts. In a n atte mpt to study the clays assoc iate d with g r a nitic rocks, the present investig ation has been undertaken. 2 Location The area covered by the present investigations, about 5,000 sq kms in extent, is bounded by latitudes 15°38' N and 16°42' N and longitudes 73°20' E and 74°15' E.     Ecotourism in Sawantwadi: An Overview By Shri Deepak Kesarkar President, Sawantwadi Municipal Council And Roshni Udyavar Head, Rachana Sansad’s Institute of Environmental Architecture For the workshop on Ecotourism 16 October 2003 Hotel Rodas, Mumbai Introduction Ecotourism is known to have originated in East Africa sometime in the 1970s. However, it became popular less than a decade ago when conservationists and environmentalists began to realize the potential of combining people’s love for nature with their concern to protect it. Ecotourism is numerously defined and understood. Basically, it implies “tourism that is sustainable”. More specifically, it implies environmentally responsible travel that promotes the preservation of a region’s natural resources along with the social, economic and cultural well being of its people. Ecotourism in Sawantwadi Located 54 km from Panjim, the capital of Goa, Sawantwadi is a one-hour drive from Dabolim Goa airport. Goa is an international tourism destination, which receives around 11 lakh tourists annually, of which 6 lakh are international. It is estimated that 60% of these tourists are from UK and Germany, most of who have a keen interest in the pre and postcolonial lifestyles of the monarchy in India. Thus, heritage tourism is an important component of Sawantwadi. Established by the Sawant Bhonsale dynasty almost 300 years ago, Sawantwadi is basically a heritage town with several ancient heritage spots including Lester gate (1895), the Great Royal Palace (1790s), Chitnis wada (1836), Mathi , Atmeshwar Tali (1891), Vithal Mandir, Raghunath market and 200 years old Kolgaon darwaja. Ecotourism is another major component of Sawantwadi. The town is blessed with natural beauty.

Sardesai in his ‘Fort of Terekhol - Diamond at the head of Goa’, tells us that this fort was most probably constructed by Khem Sawant, chieftain of Sawantwadi and feudatory of Adilshah of Bijapur. “Formerly, it was part of an enclave of Oosup, controlled by Oosupkar Desai of the Sawantwadi princely state.     CHAPTER TWO PROFILE OF SINDHUDURG DISTRICT AND VENGURLA TALUKA CHAPTER TWO PROFILE OF SINDHUDURC DISTRICT AND VENCURLA TALUKA PART-I 2.1 Loca tion : Sindhudurg District, a part of the erstwhile Ratnagiri District, came to be carved out as a separate administrative District from 1 May 1981. This district comprises seven talukas, viz., Devgad, aibhavwadi, Kankavali, Malvan on the north and the remaining Sawantwadi, Vengurla, Kudal on the sou th. The region has a north-south length of about 280 Km and an average width of 64 Km (east- west). The region is a coastal strip running north to south along the Western Coast of Maharashtra and Sahyadri hill ranges and lies between 15°36' and 18° 50' north latitude and 73°50' to 74°36' east longitude. The coastline is about 120 Km that of Maharashtra State is 720 Km. 2.2 Topography: The district can be divided into three north-south belts. They are: (i) The coastal north-south belt known as "Khalati" meaning lower strip. It has a relatively 17 better soil cover which supports agro-horti- culturai activities. Development dependent on water transport may also be considered in this region. The belt covers Deogad, Malvan and Vengurla talukas. (ii) The second north-south belt known as "Valati" meaning the upper strip. This strip includes Kudal, Kanakavali and Sawantwadi. (iii) The third belt falls on the eastern side with mostly steep slopes of Sahyadri, suitable for construction of dams for importing water; high rainfall entails forestry and horticultural development. 2.3 Climate and Temperature: The climate of the district is humider moist.
