As its own genre of dance music, techno faded as quickly as it came onto the scene, in the process influencing other genres and evolving into several subtypes itself. One can surely observe techno influ- ences in trance, trip-hop, some house records and certainly in the many above- 140BPM releases that make their way to the U.S. from countries like Germany and Italy, where some forms of pure techno thrive even today. (Where did that come from?) ... Okay ... Techno influences ... We find many wonderful producer-driven pieces with techno influences, some from right here in the U.S. One American label that puts out loads of great techno-flavored trin- kets is Moonshine. On their releases we'll find acts like Electric Skychurch (lovely ambient trance album), Cirrus, Elli Mac, Keoki (hello!) and Doc Martin, whose cur- rent projects, "Free" by Discfunktional and "Lunatix" by Blackdoctor, are really making a buzz on dance floors from coast to coast. "Lunatix" is a straight-up, bang- your-head-against-the-wall track, while "Free" offers more of a Latin, almost fla- menco, hypnotic blend of hard and soft, soulful yet trippy. Anyway, both tracks are found on one 12-inch for a nice bargain, so check it out. And if you're ever in L.A., you can hear Doc spin at Metropolis; in NYC he does his thing at . (That's right, he commutes.) Don't forget to ask your local retailer about those tres fabu Moonshine compilations, and if you want to go there, sign on at http://www.moonshine.com ....
