    »DAS LEBEN EINES GS« — AKTUELLE SCHNITTMUSTER IM DEUTSCHEN HIPHOP Dietmar Elflein Die wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit bundesdeutschem HipHop kreist um mehrere thematische Schwerpunkte: Erstens ist deutscher HipHop eine Straßen- und Jugendkultur mit einem hohen Anteil von Migranten unter den Aktiven und Konsumenten und einer eigenen, mindestens zwanzigjährigen Geschichte. Deutscher HipHop in allen seinen Facetten wird zweitens greif- bar als künstlerischer Ausdruck (nicht nur) dieser Kultur. Diese beiden Aspekte werden häufig mit Hilfe von Begriffen wie »Reterritorialisierung« (z.B. Androutsopoulos 2003; Solomon 2005) verhandelt, verstanden als eine Art lokale und/oder nationale Gegenbewegung zur globalisierten Populär- kultur, oder der Fokus der Beobachtung liegt auf der Ausbildung hybrider migrantischer Identitäten der Aktiven unter den gesellschaftlichen Bedin- gungen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, die mit Begriffen wie »Diaspora« (z.B. Kaya 2001) fassbar gemacht werden sollen. Drittens wird deutscher HipHop über kommerzielle Veröffentlichungen, deren Vermarktung sowie eine Szene-Infrastruktur, die (potentielle) Teil- haber der Kultur mit den notwendigen Accessoires versorgt, zum Geschäft und oszilliert hier zwischen Untergrund-Kleinunternehmertum und den glo- balen Konzernen der Musikindustrie. Die DVD Rap City Berlin (Gumpert et al. 2005) versammelt beispielsweise allein für Berlin 40 HipHop-orientierte, unabhängige Plattenfirmen und ist dabei nicht einmal vollständig. Viertens schließlich scheint deutscher HipHop nicht denkbar ohne den Blick nach Übersee. »African-derived aesthetics, social norms, standards, and sensibilities are deeply embedded in the form, even when it is being performed by individuals who are not themselves of African descent« (Schloss 2004: 3). Dr. Susan Watts-Taffe (Chair) Dr. Chester Laine (Co-chair) Dr. Carmen Kynard (Member) Dr. Gulbahar Beckett (Member) HIP HOP AND LITERACY 2 Abstract This qualitative dissertation study investigated the following research question: How does Hip hop influence the literate lives, i.e., the connections of Hip hop to readings, writings and other communicative practices, of students who placed into transitional college English courses? The impetus for the study came from the importance that Hip hop has in the lives of young people (Smitherman, 1997). The participants in this study, Dionne and Mike, were students placed into a 1st year non-credit bearing English course, also known as a transitional course (Armstrong, 2007), at a 4-year university. The study employed tools of ethnography (Heath & Street, 2008), such as interviews, classroom observations and textual analysis of students‘ language and literacy practices in spaces inside and outside of the classroom. This study is conceptually framed within cultural studies (Hicks, 2003, 2005, 2009; Nelson, Treichler, & Grossberg, 1992) and sociocultural studies (Dyson & Smitherman, 2009; Street, 2001). Data were analyzed using linguistic analysis (Alim, 2006) and textual analysis (Kellner, 2009).

    My first real encounter with actual German hip-hop was in late July 2003 at Germany’s MTV Hip Hop Open at Stuggard, Germany. Johannes "Strachi" Strachwitz runs 711hiphop.com. Strachi and Alex Ritcher are the co-promoters of the MTV Hip-Hop Open. Alex also runs a major German talent agency called Four Artists. Some of Germany's top hip-hop groups are on Four Artists. MTV was broadcasting the live one-day hip-hop concert that drew around 10,000 German teenagers. I hadn’t arrived but a minute and was interviewing some German lowriders at the MTV Hip-Hop Open Fairgrounds. I started paying attention to a German hip-hop song blaring on the loud speakers. The beat was forgettable, but the hook was not. I barely bopping my head to the beat when the hook jumped in saying, “We Das Niggas!” “We Das Niggas!” I thought it was funny hearing the N-word in German and then I realized I was the only “Das Nigga” around a sea of white and unfamiliar faces. But why should I be surprised to see thousands of foreign white folks shouting out “Where My Nigga At?” Or “Nigga Who” or dozens and dozens of “Nigga” hooks on practically every major hit hip-hop song or music video. Our hood or urban culture is everywhere in Germany--the good and the bad. So I laughed off my “We Das Niggas” experience and enjoyed the concert. The acts at the MTV Open were all popular German hip-hop stars and the only noticeable US performer was RZA of the Wu Tang Clan.
