Checklist of Post-1500 Italian Manuscripts in the Newberry Library compiled by Cynthia S. Wall - 1991 The following inventory lists alphabetically by main entry the post-1500 Italian manuscripts in the Newberry Library. (Pre-1500 or “medieval” manuscripts are inventoried by de Ricci.) The parameters for this inventory are quite wide: included are (hopefully) all manuscripts in the Case and Wing collections which are either by an Italian author, located in Italy, written in Italian, and/or concerning Italian affairs. For example, the reader will find not only numerous papal documents, a letter by Michel Angelo Buonarroti, and the papers of the Parravicini family, but also a German transcription of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and a nineteenth-century political analysis of Sicily by the English consul John Goodwin. This list was compiled from the shelf lists of Case (including Cutter, lower case, fixed location, and Library of Congress call numbers) and Wing (including Case Wing, Cutter, and Library of Congress). Many of these entries are abbreviated, and the reader may find additional bibliographic information in the main card catalog. This inventory does not include the Library’s collection of facsimiles of various Italian manuscripts in other libraries. Entires for such facsimiles will be found in the online catalog. C. S. • Apostolic Lines of Succession-10-2018
Apostolic Lines of Succession for ++Michael David Callahan, DD, OCR, OCarm. The Catholic Church in America “Have you an apostolic succession? Unfold the line of your bishops.” Tertullian, 3rd century A.D. A special visible expression of Apostolic Succession is given in the consecration/ ordination of a bishop through the laying on of hands by other bishops who have, themselves, been ordained in the same manner through a succession of bishops leading back to the apostles of Jesus. The role of the bishop must always be understood within the context of the authentic handing on of the faith from one generation to the next generation of the whole Church, beginning with the Christian community of the time of the Apostles. Thus, as the Church is the continuation of the apostolic community, so the bishops are the continuation of the ministry of the college of the apostles of Jesus within that apostolic community. It is essentially collegial rather than monarchical. This tradition is affirmed in the teaching ministry of Church leadership, and authentically celebrated in the sacraments, with particular attention to the sacrament of holy orders (ordination) and the laying on of hands. Apostolic Succession is the belief of Catholic Christians that the bishops are successors of the original apostles of Jesus. This is understood as the bishops being ordained into the episcopal collegium or “sacramental order.” As bishops are by tradition consecrated by at least three other bishops, the actual number of lists of succession can become quite substantial. Listed here are three lines of succession: 1. From Saints Paul and Linus Succession through Archbishop Baladad 2.

A SCURRILOUS LETTER TO POPE PAUL III A Transcription and Translation of Ms 469 (f.101r – 129r) of the Vadianische Sammlung of the Kantonsbibliothek of St. Gallen by Paul Hanbridge PRÉCIS A Scurrilous Letter to Pope Paul III. A Transcription and Translation of Ms 469 (f.101r – 129r) of the Vadianische Sammlung of the Kantonsbibliothek of St. Gallen. This study introduces a transcription and English translation of a ‘Letter’ in VS 469. The document is titled: Epistola invectiva Bernhardj Occhinj in qua vita et res gestae Pauli tertij Pont. Max. describuntur . The study notes other versions of the letter located in Florence. It shows that one of these copied the VS469, and that the VS469 is the earliest of the four Mss and was made from an Italian exemplar. An apocryphal document, the ‘Letter’ has been studied briefly by Ochino scholars Karl Benrath and Bendetto Nicolini, though without reference to this particular Ms. The introduction considers alternative contemporary attributions to other authors, including a more proximate determination of the first publication date of the Letter. Mario da Mercato Saraceno, the first official Capuchin ‘chronicler,’ reported a letter Paul III received from Bernardino Ochino in September 1542. Cesare Cantù and the Capuchin historian Melchiorre da Pobladura (Raffaele Turrado Riesco) after him, and quite possibly the first generations of Capuchins, identified the1542 letter with the one in transcribed in these Mss. The author shows this identification to be untenable. The transcription of VS469 is followed by an annotated English translation. Variations between the Mss are footnoted in the translation. © Paul Hanbridge, 2010 A SCURRILOUS LETTER TO POPE PAUL III A Transcription and Translation of Ms 469 (f.101r – 129r) of the Vadianische Sammlung of the Kantonsbibliothek of St.

  • Fire, Smoke and Vapour. Jan Brueghel's 'Poetic Hells
FIRE, SMOKE AND VAPOUR. JAN BRUEGHEL’S ‘POETIC HELLS’: ‘GHESPOOCK’ IN EARLY MODERN EUROPEAN ART Christine Göttler Karel van Mander, in the ‘Life of Jeronimus Bos’ in his Schilder-Boeck of 1604, speaks of the ‘wondrous or strange fancies’ (wonderlijcke oft seldsaem versieringhen), which this artist ‘had in his head and expressed with his brush’ – the ‘phantoms and monsters of hell ( ghespoock en ghe- drochten der Hellen) which are usually not so much kindly as ghastly to look upon’.1 Taking one of Bosch’s depictions of the Descent of Christ into the Limbo of the Fathers as an example, van Mander further notes that ‘it’s a wonder what can be seen there of odd spooks (oubolligh ghespoock); also, how subtle and natural (aerdigh en natuerlijck) he was with ames, \ res, smoke and vapours’.2 In the Schilder-Boeck, van Mander frequently uses the word ‘aerdigh’ to describe the aesthetically pleasing quality of small works or small details;3 here, ‘aerdigh’ refers to the natural and lively depiction of res. As it has been observed, van Mander’s list of Bosch’s painterly expres- sions echoes Erasmus’s often-cited eulogy on Dürer in the Dialogus de recta Latini Graecique sermonis pronuntiatione (Dialogue About the Correct Pro- nunciation of Latin and Greek), published in Basel in 1528. According to 1 Mander K. van, The Lives of the Illustrious Netherlandish and German Painters, from the \ rst edition of the Schilder-boeck (1603–1604), ed. H. Miedema, 6 vols. (Davaco: 1994–99) I 124f. Here and in the following, my translation is largely based on the one given in Miedema’s edition of The Lives; I use, however, a more literal translation of van Mander’s expressions.

  • 045-San Nicola in Carcere
(045/43) San Nicola in Carcere San Nicola in Carcere (St Nicholas in Prison) is a 16th century titular church and a minor basilica, and is also the regional church for those from Puglia and Lucania living in Rome. The basilica isnear the Forum Boarium in rione Ripa. The church is dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors and of children and the remote cause of the phenomenon of Santa Claus. His shrine is at Bari which is why this church is the national church for those who moved from Puglia and Lucania to Rome. [1] [4] The reference to ‘Prison’ is obscure. 'In carcere' probably refers to a tradition, supported by Pliny's history of Rome, that there was once a prison here, built in the ruins of the temples. [1] History Perhaps the most interesting thing about the church is that it incorporates the remains of three temples of the Republican era (2nd century BC) which used to stand in a row, side by side in the ancient Forum Holitorium (a vegetable market) with their entrances facing east. How the three temples became a church is a process which is completely obscure. [1] The northernmost was dedicated to Janus, and had two rows of six Ionic columns of peperino at the entrance and eight down each side. Two survive to the north, and seven to the south embedded with their architrave in the church's north wall. Well-preseved parts of the podium also survive in the crypt. The site of the middle temple is occupied by the church; it was dedicated to Juno Sospita and was in the Ionic style.

  • 031-San Crisogono
(031/19) San Crisogono San Crisogono is a 12th century parish, titular and conventual church, and a minor basilica in rione Trastevere. The dedication is to the martyr St Chrysogonus. The complex includes remains of a 4th century church edifice. [1] The Church of San Crisogono, alongside the Churches of Santa Cecilia and of Santa Maria in Trestevere, is one of the most important religious centers in the district extending to the other side of the River Tiber. [g] History Titulus Its origins date back to the fourth century and are probably closely related to the Roman domus in which San Crisogono was taken prisoner before his martyrdom, which occurred in 303 during the persecution of Diocletian. The first documentary reference to the church is as one of the tituli, with its priest in the list of signatories to the acts of the Roman synod in 499. The tituli were the original parish churches of the city, and this one has remained a parish church from then to the present day. The church was then known as the Titulus Chrysogoni. This has traditionally been taken to refer to an obscure martyr called St Chrysogonus, who is thought to have been martyred at the start of the 4th century. However, the Roman church might have been founded by a different benefactor called Chrysogonus, with the link to the saint being made later when his relics were enshrined here (perhaps at the start of the 5th century). The saint became popular enough in Rome for his name to be inserted into the Roman Canon of the Mass, where it remains.

  • 064-Sant'andrea Delle Fratte
(064/36) Sant'Andrea delle Fratte Sant'Andrea delle Fratte is a minor basilica, as well as an early 17th century parish, titular and convent church in the rione Colonna, just to the south of the Piazza di Spagna, dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle. History The first church here was built in the 1192, called infra hortes (later translated into "delle Fratte" or "shrubs") for it was located in a countryside area. The first time that the name Fratte is used is in the 15th century. It means literally "woods" or "overgrown vegetation", and seems to commemorate an overgrown area which might have been an abandoned piece of land, some shrubby garden or the facing slope of the Pincian hill when it was still wild. (1) (11) The church was probably rebuilt (or newly built on this site) in the 15th century, when there is a hint in the records that an Augustinian nunnery was established here. Then it was for some time the national church of Scotland as an independent kingdom (St Andrew is Scotland's patron). After the Scottish Reformation in 1560 the Scots completely lost interest in it, and for a while it was taken over by a pious confraternity dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. However it was given to the Order of Minim of St. Francis of Paola Friars in 1585, and they still serve the parish which was simultaneously created. (1) (11) In 1604 the construction of the new church was begun, under the design of Gaspare Guerra. The project halted in 1612 due to lack of funds.
