40 HITS September 13, 1993 JOIN ROCK THE VOTE!«. 10 NO «11 1111

You Can't Win If You Don't Play: Rock The Vote gives your voice real political power— as part of ahuge group of young people fighting together for freedom of expression in our music, in our schools, in our workplaces and in our communities. You Already Have The Power... For the first time in twenty years, young people turned out to vote in record numbers to fight for change. We baffled the experts — shook up the political establishment And then we led the fight for passage of the "Motor Voter" bill, making it easier for all Americans to register to vote. And we won!

But our generation still has many other questions about our lives that are fundar entally political: Will/get ajob? Can Ipay for college? How can Ihelp save the planet? We have political interests as ageneration — and we must loin together to fight for hem with one voice. That's what Rock The Vote is all about:

• Empowering the youth of America, first by helping them register to vote, and then by giving them the tools they need to take control. •Educating young people about their stake in government and politics and giving them away to get involved. Lobbying for the interests of the youth of America and helping our members to do the same in their own communities.

POMO PICKS Edited by Karen Glauber POMO MUGS Iggy Pop, "American Caesar" (Vir- gin): Going down New Orleans to record his latest album, Iggy Pop sticks with just atrio of musicians and runs a wide musical gamut. The album begins with the single "Wild America," and provides one of the crunchiest guitar riffs of the year. Iggy gives a nod to Johnny Cash, with "Highway Song," and spits out venomous punk on "Hate." A cameo appearance from Henry Rollins and a tune co-written by ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones round out Iggy's KUM-BA-FRICKING-YA: Pictured here with Atlantic's Al Smith are most diverse collection yet. (Chris Carey) King Buzzo of the Melvins, Krist Novoselic & Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Billy Anderson and Dale of the Melvins performing their My Life With The Thrill Kill KuIt, "13 favorite campfire songs all sung to the tune of Nirvana's immortal "Negative Above The Night" (Interscope): Su- Creep." The set list included "Sippin'Strychnine," "Old MacDonald Smashed His permarket tabloid sensationalism, evan- Amp" and a musing rendition of "Guess I'll Just Eat Worms." Said Smith, gelical occultism, Vegas-style glitz, in- "They're not well, you know Killer B-sides, though." dustrial mayhem and underground sleaze all conspire to compose Thrill Kill KuIt. On their fourth full-length release, TKK again reinvent their aural milieu by concocting these 13 new mindbenders with samples, soundbites and rhythms that defy genre or era distinction, while maintaining their position on the extreme cutting edge of the al- ternative dance scene. Pure candyflippin' heaven, comrade.

Ghost Of An American Airman, "Skin" (Hollywood): This Belfast, Not- them Ireland quartet's sophomore effort AND RIGHT NEXT DOOR...: Pearl Jam's Dave Abbruzzese and Jeff Ament and Tribe After Tribe's Robbi Robb, Chris Frazier brims with an unusual passion and and Robby Whitelaw performed their favorite drinking songs to the tune of depth that's made all the more impres- "Rockin' In The Free World." After a stirring version of "When Irish Eyes Are sive by the band's driving, unfettered Smiling," Ament chattered excitedly, "Wouldn't it be killer ¡fa bunch of bands got I. arrangements. And then he threw up copiously all over Dave's shoes. But it was like Jimmy Webb-penned, Glen Campbell-performed classic s0000 cool. "Wichita Lineman." The early success of the first single, "King Of Nothing," proves this Ghost is no mere apparition.

The Ocean Blue, "Beneath The Rhythm And Sound" (Sire/Reprise). 20. David Shelzel and the Ocean Blue return with the clear-voiced, gently jan- gling pop that makes them atruly unc- ommon pleasure when placed against the featureless wall of regurgitating garage bands. Harkening back to the salad days of Haircut 100 and The Three O'Clock, the album HEART-SHAPED CASH: Whooping it up at the World Fan,oin KROQ reminds the listener that a poignant alto sax delivers emotion are the ROQ's Darcy Sanders, Tears For Fears' Roland Or- zabal, Mercury's Marc "White Boy" Chotiner and PD Kevin just as profound as that of a wall of careening guitar. It's been two years since Mechanic Records has hit the streets with any music. Ttuu their licensing OVER THE agreement with Noise, artists such as Kreator and Coroner have been released and the Futurist label has given birth to developing acts, but it's the Mechanic label that's Steve Sinclair's baby. Since its inception in '87, the label was instrumental in bringing metal to MCA thru adeal made EDGE with then-President Irving Azoff, Sinclair and attorney Jules Kurz. The reuniting of Azoff and Sinclair at Giant can only mean great things for all concerned, beginning with those former Sub Pop starlets, Tad, whose new release "Inhaler" will be the first to benefit from the deal. The band has 10 dates opening for Alice in Chains and it probably also doesn't hurt that mgr Perry Feigenbaum has office space in Alice mgr. Susan Silver's Seattle setup... Stranger Than Ripleys': We always thought Nirvana's look was, like, y'know, organic. Their upcoming Spin cover will feature the band styled by Laura Willis, who owns the famous Screaming Mimi's boutique in NYC and was former employer of Cyndi Lauper at the begin- ning of her "Girls Just Wanna" days. Does this mean Curt and the boys will be in tafetta?... Another one bites the dust Washington Square nightclub in Miami, just astone's throw from Sean Penn's new nightspot, has closed its doors. At the rate we're going here, bancLs'll be forced to set up in parking lots in order to route them- selves thm certain regions... We thought it was aholiday. Major L.A. industry-type showout for the Sunday evening Quicksand, Zombie, Anthrax show at Irvine Meadows. And, in the true nature of rock concerts, cer- tain passes only got certain people to certain places at certain times. We were lucky. We were crew. Show was great and there was Snapple in the dressing rooms... New debuts on retail chart with Entombed EP and Type 0 Negative's "Bloody Kisses"... Mucho positive feedback on our new tracking system. Lotsa stations simply sending thru program logs while others are taking the time to give us number of rotations each artist is getting on their shows. If stations are frozen, their playlists are not re-entered. Negatives? Haven't heard any, but if you got 'em, let's hear 'em... New to rotations this week includes Anacrusis, Coroner, Clutch, Melvins, Scor- pions... "Best Hard Rock" video? Pearl Jam. Hello? It's getting to look alot like the Grammys... Congrats to Morbid Angel for "Best Signed Band" at the 4th Annual Tampa Bay Metal Awards. Don't confuse them with the Genitorturers getting "Best Signed Band Album By THELMA and LOUISE 'specially since Morbid vocalist David Vincent and Gen are Tad: They're big. They're bad an item. Wonder what their roc room looks like... They're lid

ByC JEFFH CHANG AR TS We're sitting around the corporate tableT in aboardroom filled with smoke. But, of course, the stuff being smoked is banned by law and the businessmen at the table are members of rap's hottest crew, the Soul Assassins (including Funkdoobiest, House of Pain and Cypress Hill),

kicking back and casually dressed down in "Legalize It" T-shirts and oversized shorts. In an earlier day, agroup like Cypress Hill might have

illustrated the best way not to get ahead in the industry. But on the rebellious edge of the '90s, the stoned way of their walk has carved out a

rapidly growing and deeply committed fan base.

Their debut record began its ascent in 1991 with some well-placed knocks on afew of those out-of-the-way doors: first developing astrong

buzz through college radio, alternative video outlets and street promotion, then getting twin lifts from the movie "Juice" and arun on the

1992 Lollapalooza tour. After exploding past gold in the late summer of 1992, the record continued to move past 1.4 million units.

68 HITS September 13, 1993 While so-called "hardcore" or "gangsta rap" is currently suffering its greatest critical denunciation, Cypress Hill can claim acentral role in

the revitalization of the genre that is experiencing apeak of airplay and chart success. The group's slow booming beats, cypre-delic lyrics, their protective credo of "self-defense turns to offense" and their wild, gleeful abandon have made them barrio legends, cult heroes and chart toppers, opening the gates for aflood of imitators. Yet the success has not rushed to their heads, pun intended. They remain true to their (grass) roots, steadily pumping their hemp/weed politics and occasionally putting in time for benefits, such as aLatino scholarship fund at alocal community college. As the single, "Insane In The Brain," went gold and their second album, "Black Sunday," debuted at the top of the

charts, HITS' resident blunt object, Jeff Chang "Walla Walla Bing Bang," talked to B-Real and Sen Dog about their success, their influence on hip-hop and their mission before everyone passed out on the couch. "W EDIDN 'T THINK WOMEN WOULD LIKE IT! THEY LIKE IT A LOT." SEN DoG
