The city lies at the southernmost end of U.S. Route 1, the longest north-south road in the United MARKET States. Key West in the southernmost city in the contiguous United States and the westernmost OVERVIEW island connected by highway in the Florida Keys. The island is about 4 miles long and 1 mile wide, with a total land mass of 4.2 square miles. Duval Street, its main street is 1.1 miles in length in its 14-block long crossing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Straights of Florida and the Atlantic Ocean. Key West is about 95 miles north of Cuba at their closest points. The city is the county seat of Monroe County. The city boundaries include the island of Key West and all or part of several nearby islands. Key West was relatively isolated until 1912 when it was connected to the Florida mainland via the Overseas Railway extension of Henry M. Flagler's Florida Easy Coast Railway. Flagler created a landfill at Trumbo Point for his rail yards. The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed much of the railroad and killed hundreds of residents, including around 400 World War I veterans who were living in camps and working on federal road and mosquito- control projects in the Middle Keys. The FEC could not afford to restore the railroad. The U.S. Government rebuilt the rail route into an automobile highway, completed in 1938, built atop many of the footings of the railroad. It became an extension of U.S. 1. Prior to the Cuban Revolution of 1959, there were regular ferry and airplane services between Key West and Havana. Key West has been visited by many Presidents of the United States over the years. Some notable presidents to visit were Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, William H Taft, Franklin D Roosevelt and most frequently by Harry S. Truman who would go on to have the "Little White House" Truman Annex take their names from his frequent and well-documented visits. Key West has plenty of things to do. World class fishing exists both on the shallow water flats and in the deep blue sea beyond our barrier coral reef. Other opportunities include Dolphin Tours, jet skis, para-sailing, glass bottom boat tours, and sunset cruises are available year round. Tourism is a key economic driver for Key West. In 2017 there were over 375,000 passenger arrivals by Air and over 750,000 arriving by cruise ship. $2 Florida Keys Sea Heritage Journal VOL. 20 NO. 2 WINTER 2009 USS SHARK OFFICIAL QUARTERLY PUBLICATION OF THE KEY WEST MARITIME HISTORICAL SOCIETY William Beverly Randolph Hackley I first read William Beverly Randolph Hackley’s diary about 25 years ago. Since then I have transcribed all of the Key West part of the diary, the only account of family life in Key West in the 1850s. During the research I have found information about him and his family and met a number of his descendants and found a photograph of one of his daughters Charlotte Hackley Spencer (Sea Heritage Journal, Spring 2009). Now thanks to Jane Jones we have this photograph of William Hackley. The diary was saved by Dr. R. L. “Lee” Goulding son of Harriet Hackley and Frank Ross Goulding, III. Harriet, one of William’s three daughters, was the 2nd wife of Frank. His first wife was her sister Sarah Hackley. To help understand the diary I have been gathering information about Hackley, his family and the people in his diary. William Beverly Randolph Hackley was born to Richard and Harriet Randolph Hackley on October 7, 1806 in Virginia. William Beverly Randolph Hackley. Photo credit: Jane Jones. • 2012 Annual Report City Manager
City of Key West 2012 Annual Report City Manager Bogdan Vitas, City Manager Reflecting on 2012, the City of Key West continued to improve its financial condition, maintain and improve services to the public, and importantly, experienced a significant changing of the guard. In July of last year, I joined the City as its new City Manager replacing long time manager Jim Scholl who entered into retirement. This year's annual report reflects upon Mr. Scholl's past leadership and the new direction taken by my administration during the last year. With a great sense of pride, the management team and I are pleased to present an overview of last year's accomplishments. The foremost goal of this report is to provide the community with a transparent accounting of the major accomplishments we have completed to make your city a better place to live, work, play and call home. When I took the reins, it became clear that there are many old and new challenges the City has yet to meet based on its strategic plan, a plan that this administration will tackle in the years ahead. Foremost on that agenda, we moved forward rapidly to address several major cap- ital improvement projects obtaining City Commission approval for a new City Hall at Glynn Archer School, Sexton's building at our historic cemetery, Transit Center on Stock Island, down- town Fire Station, and the Truman Waterfront Park. These capital projects represent a significant public investment of your local tax dollars and public grant funds to support our community for future generations.

City of Key West 2006 Annual Report City Manager Julio Avael City Manager: Julio Avael Address: 525 Angela Street Phone: 305-809-3888 Welcome to this year’s edition of the City of Key West Annual Report. As we transition into 2007, this report serves as a reflec- tion on another successful year here in the Southernmost City. Though there were hurdles and obstacles to overcome last year, I can confidently say that this city has risen to the challenge yet again and come out stronger and better able to serve its resi- dents and visitors as a result. Much of this past year was spent recovering from 2005’s devas- tating hurricane season, most notably Hurricane Wilma, which left our island underwater and caused millions of dollars in dam- ages. Though we are still feeling the financial effects of that storm, the city is bouncing back to its pre-Wilma strength, boost- ed by quick recovery efforts on the part of your city staff. Each department was crippled by the storm, but by working together, we have replaced countless flooded vehicles, cleared and improved drainage systems in several neighborhoods and repaired damaged buildings and structures throughout the city. City Manager Julio Avael.
