Quakers Living Adventurously: The Library and Archives of the Society of Friends Transcript Date: Wednesday, 23 January 2013 - 1:00PM Location: Barnard's Inn Hall 23 January 2013 Quakers Living Adventurously: The Library and Archives of the Society of Friends David Blake In this lecture I aim to do two main things: To tell you something about the history of the Library of the Society of Friends over almost 340 years and to talk about some of the things Quakers have done, illustrating them with materials held by the Library. But first I will talk briefly about the Society – say something about its name, tell you about its foundation and add just a little about what Quakerism is. However, I don’t consider myself to be an expert on this and the focus of this lecture will be very much on the library. The Formation of the Society and its Early History First, then, the name of the Society. The official name is the Religious Society of Friends in Britain, but to many people it is known simply as the Society of Friends. The word ‘Quaker’, which comes from the tendency of early Friends to shake as they worshipped, springs more easily off the tongue and indeed, if you look at our website you will see the banner ‘Quakers in Britain’. But Quakers - despite being very modern in many ways, witness their views on same sex marriage – seem to like tradition and you will hear the terms Quaker and Friend used all the time and interchangeably. Many names have been retained: the Chief Executive is still known as the Recording Clerk and one of the main bodies remains the Meeting for Sufferings. -

Aesthetics in Science, as Practised by Quakers in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries Geoffrey Cantor Universityof Leeds Quaker Studies 4 (1999): 1-20 Abstract: Drawing on examples from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it will be argued that the sciences - but particularly observational sciences such as astronomy, botany and meteorology - were highly acceptable to Quakers. Moreover, the study of nature was vested with an aesthetic that emphasised God as the Creator of nature and of order and beauty in the natural world. While many wealthy Quakers participated in these sciences, botany also provided employment for Quakers from less affiuent backgrounds. Hence a number Quakers made careers as botanical lecturers, writers, publishers and illustrators. The role of the botanical illustrator is explored to show that the aim was to portray nature- God's Creation- with integrity. -

Each Quaker or Friend, travels their own path, their own way, with the support of other Friends. We try to be clear about our path by listening to the Spirit within us, listening to others and reading the wisdom of others. Quakers began in England as a Christian group and now we are also open to many other ideas. We meet together for what we call Meeting for Worship and sit together in silence, until someone feels ‘led’ to ‘Minister’. We follow what we call testimonies: simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and sustainability. In these pages we'll look a bit more at some of the earliest Quakers and hear what Quakers do today. We hope some of your questions are answered. The Quest for Harmony in a Turbulent World: The Principle of "Love and Unity'' in Colonial Pennsylvania Politics ACCORDING TO JAMES LOGAN, mentor of many politicians in ZJk Pennsylvania, "Dissension, Faction, Wars, foreign and intes- JL .m> tine" were created by "Pride, Ambition, and Resentment," qualities antithetical to his—and the Quaker—ideal of "the Beauty of Civil Life."1 For Logan there was an inverse correlation between re- sponsible political behavior and the degree to which human passions controlled politicians. On one level Logan's opinion is perfectly com- patible with that political theory which takes as its starting point the sorry fact that mankind is mostly governed by passions. Since passions are not reliable guides for proper behavior, the responsibility of es- tablishing order falls to the chosen few who manage to keep their passions within proper bounds. Yet, on a different level of argument, it is no coincidence that Logan's causes for "Dissension, Faction, Wars, foreign and intestine" are identical with those other Quakers usually reserved for wars. Moreover, for Quakers these causes were not just deficiencies of mankind but serious deviations from Christian values encompassed in terms like "meekness," "mildness of temper," and "love" as prescribed in the Sermon on the Mountain. Did these terms, however, affect the Quakers' vision of politics and society the same way that the concept of the passions influenced, for example, the political theory of Hobbes and Harrington,2 and if so, in what way did this affect the structure of politics in Pennsylvania? *A shorter version was read to the conference on "The Founding of Pennsylvania, 1682-1800" on October 16, 1982 at Philadelphia. -

ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the proposition that the centrally managed work carried out by Britain Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends has suffered from a decline in the income contributed by Members and Attenders. It argues that declining income is strongly linked to dwindling membership. It considers whether the declining levels of income and membership are expressions of secularisation. It researches the historical growth in the Society’s centrally managed work and the development of an organisational structure to support this. It considers recent past experience when the perceived importance of the work led Quakers to lose the balance between caution and ‘living adventurously’. Soaring expenditure, unmatched by similar increase in contribution income, forced a move to budgetary planning, based on a balanced budget and maintenance of a prudent level of reserves. -

Stories From Discovering the Underground Railroad, Abolitionism, and African American Life in Seneca County, 1820-1880 Introduction The various stories I have compiled here are based upon the information found in the project report Discovering the Underground Railroad, Abolitionism, and African American Life in Seneca County, New York, 1820-1880 written by Dr. Judith Wellman of Historical New York Research Associates. This is the report of the research project funded in 2005-06 by a Preserve New York Grant from the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts. The grant made it possible to do an in-depth sites survey of places in Seneca County that were part of the Underground Railroad and/or abolitionist activity and/or homes of African Americans. This report was completed through the Seneca County Historian’s Office. The purpose of these compiled stories is to help the reader grasp more fully the wonderful insights that can be gleaned from making use of the information found in this report. In my stories I have tried to take the information found in the project report about a particular place or a particular person and put it into a narrative format and add some discussion of the historical significance about this person or place. While each story can “stand alone,” when put together they help the reader to understand much of what was happening in Seneca County during these years. I sincerely thank Dr. Wellman for her wonderful wording that I have so extensively used and to which I have added some discussion of historical significance. -
