1 INTRODUCTION This year’s award was yet another Grammy, this time for Best Contemporary Folk Album for “Love And Theft”. In the summer the movie Masked And Anonymous was filmed with a number of established Hollywood stars. A first version of the film was later shown at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2003. The Never-Ending Tour kept rolling on. 2002 gave us 107 concerts in 13 countries in US and Europe. .

3 THE 2002 CALENDAR 31 January This year’s touring starts in Orlando, Florida. The big news is that after 288 concerts David Kemper is replaced by George Recile, earlier with Keith Richards, Dr. John, Joan Osborne and others. The set list remains the same though, only four songs differ from the previous concert in 2001! 9 February dies. 24 February After 18 shows the first tour of the year ends in Austin, Texas. 26 February Johnny Cash turns 70! 27 February At the 44 th Annual Grammy Awards, Bob Dylan gets a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album for “Love And Theft”. Dylan and perform Cry A While. 4 March Dylan records Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking with his touring band and Mavis Staples in a recording studio in Los Angeles. The song is later included on the cover album , The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan. Waiting For You , a new Dylan composition in ¾ time, may also have been recorded at this session. This song is later included on the soundtrack from the movie The Divine Secrets of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood. 24 March Dylan attends the Elton John Aids Foundation Oscar party in Moomba’s restaurant in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. 5 April Dylan and his band, all very jet-lagged, start a lengthy European tour with a show at The Globe Arena in Stockholm. Two surprises embellish the evening, and Solid Rock. The former is played much as the version of the recent soundtrack from Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Solid Rock has not been played by Dylan since the last 1981 show in the Civic Center Theatre, Lakeland, Florida, 21 November. This choice might have been inspired by the recent recording sessions with Mavis Staples. 9 April Subterranean Homesick returns to the set, for the first time since Glasgow, Scotland, 3 February 1991. 21 April Jim Keltner plays first half of the show in Hallenstadion, Zürich, Switzerland, due to problems with one of George Recile 's arms. 23 April Jim Keltner replaces George Recile for the rest of the European Tour. At this show slot 2 starts featuring acoustic versions of songs normally played electric with the band. First out is Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) an acoustic first. 24 April Acoustic second song this evening is I'll Remember You, first acoustic version since MTV Unplugged 1994. 24 April Acoustic second song this evening is l Want You, 28 April Acoustic second song this evening is When I Paint My Masterpiece, yet another acoustic first. 2 May Acoustic second song this evening is , making it the fourth acoustic debut this tour. 4 May Acoustic second song this evening is , making it the fifth acoustic debut this tour. 9 May The show starts with the first acoustic Maggie’s Farm ever! 12 May The final show at the Docklands Arena, London, England, features the First acoustic version of If You See Her, Say Hello since Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, 27 April 1976. 28 May Release of the soundtrack from the movie The Divine Secrets of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood. 2 July Filming of Masked And Anonymous starts in Los Angeles. 18 July The concert sequence in Masked And Anonymous is shot at Stage 6 of Ray-Art Studios in Canoga Park, California. Songs performed are Dixie, Dirt Road Blues, I’ll Remember You and If You See Her, Say Hello. There are also some new songs yet to be recorded. Dylan is backed by his touring band. 22 July dies. Late July Dylan and Biff Dawes mix the songs appearing in Masked And Anonymous in Scream Studios, Studio City, California. The song ‘Cross The Green Mountain is recorded with the touring band at the same studio. This song is later used i n the soundtrack to the film Gods And Generals. 2 August The US Summer Tour starts with a show in Worcester, Massachusetts. 3 August Dylan plays the , now called “Apple & Eve Newport Folk Festival”. He appears wearing a fake beard and a wig of long blond hair. 4 August This evening’s show in Augusta, Maine features the first acoustic version ever of . 8 August The show in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada features the first live acoustic version ever of Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues . 9 August In Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada the first acoustic version ever of Man In The Long Black Coat is played. 15 August Starting this night in Hamburg, New York, each show is introduced by the following presentation: “The poet laureate of rock 'n' roll. The voice of the promise of the '60s counterculture. The guy who forced folk into bed with rock, who donned makeup in the '70s and disappeared into a haze of substance abuse, who emerged to "find Jesus," who was written off as a has-been by the end of the '80s, and who suddenly shifted gears and released some of the strongest music of his career beginning in the late '90s.” This is a quote from an article in Buffalo News 9 August 2002. 16 August The acoustic firsts continues this evening with . 18 August Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn) is played for the first time since Isle Of Wight 31 August 1969. 1 September The Summer Tour ends with a show at the Janus Jazz Festival in Aspen, . 4 October Dylan starts one of his best legs of the Never-Ending Tour in Seattle, Washington. From this concert on he plays electric piano on most songs and the set list is interspersed with a number of covers. The majority of these are by Warren Zevon, a tribute to the singer- song writer, suffering from incurable lung cancer. The first concert features Accidentally Like A Martyr, Boom Boom Mancini and Mutineer by Warren Zevon and also a surprisingly effective version of ’ Brown Sugar, which remains in the set during the whole tour. The first acoustic version of Solid Rock is also played. 5 October Warren Zevon’s Lawyers Guns And Money is played. Highway 61 — Bob Dylan 2002 page 7 of 76

7 October The concert in Red Bluff, California sees the first acoustic version of Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, not counting the MTV Unplugged version in 18 November 1994. 8 October In Sacramento, California two more covers get their debuts, The End Of The Innocence by Don Henley and Bruce Hornsb y and ’s Old Man. 11 October First acoustic version of Seeing The Real You At Last is played at the Greek Theatre, Berkeley, California. 17 October Last song from ”Love And Theft” to be played live, , finally appears at the show at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, California. 19 October Live debut of Van Morrison’s Carrying A Torch. 25 October The show in Bernalillo, New Mexico contains yet another surprise, the first live performance of In The Summertime since Ann Arbor, 8 November 1981. 26 & 28 Dylan dedicates The Times They Are A-Changin' to the liberal Minnesota Senator Paul October Wellstone, who was tragically killed in an airplane accident. 11 November Yea! Heavy And A Bottle Of Bread is played in response to a request. It is of course another live debut. 13 November Dylan and band plays Something as a tribute to , “because we were such good buddies”. 22 November 37th and last show of the Fall tour in Fairfax, . 26 November Release of The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 – Bob Dylan Live 1975: The .

4.1 Divine Secrets of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood

DMZ Records CK 86534, released 28 May 2002. This soundtrack from the movie Divine Secrets of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood contains the Dylan song Waiting For You , a waltz, recorded in March in Los Angeles with the regular touring band. The soundtrack was produced by .

4.2 Bootleg Series Volume 5 The fifth volume of the Bootleg Series, called Bob Dylan Live 1975: The Rolling Thunder Revue , was released 26 November 2002, a most welcome addition to the official live releases. This double CD features 2 CDs with tracks selected from five different concerts from the first Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975. 4.4.1 Sydney, Australia, 24 February 1986 The whole show from soundboard. Parts have earlier been released on the Hard To Handle video and on the Westwood One radio shows.

4.4.2 Hartford, Connecticut, 30 October 1965 This is a never before circulated audience recording. 4.4.5 Atlanta, Georgia, 9 February 2002 Yet another complete soundboard recording.

4.4.6 South America 1991 Most of the recordings from this tour are now circulating, the exceptions being Buenos Aires 8 August and Sao Paolo 16 August, from which only 50 minutes are available. All other tapes are complete. Highway 61 — Bob Dylan 2002 page 11 of 76

5 Masked And Anonymous Diary 27 February Reports in the trade press about the possibility of Dylan taking a starring role in a film with the working title Masked And Anonymous. The film is said to be based on a short story titled “Los Vientos del Destino”, “The Winds of Destiny”. 24 April It is reported that Bob Dylan will play Jack Fate, “an ageing rocker” and that Luke Wilson will play Bobby Cupid, Jack Fate’s former roadie. is asked to play Pagan Lace, a close friend of a journalist covering Jack Fate’s last concert. It is at this stage not entirely clear if Dylan really has signed. The film is said to be based on a short story by Enrique Morales, the screenplay written by René Fontaine and Sergy Petrov. Production is planned for July. 29 April is said to have signed for Masked And Anonymous. 3 May Penelope Cruz has signed and will play the role of Pagan Lace. 8 June Angela Bassett will play The Mistress, “with a past with Jack Fate”. 16 June The filming will start “next week”. The movie soundtrack will feature 40 minutes of music with Bob Dylan, including songs written for the film. Also signed for the film are , and . Cheech Marin will play the role of Prospero and Richard C. Sarafian will play the father of Jack Fate. Director is . 30 June has been signed. Jessica Lange will play “a cynical concert promoter”. Jeff Bridges will play a journalist and John Goodman will play Jack Fate’s agent. It is now said that Dylan has been developing the film with Larry Charles for about two years. Is Enrique Morales perhaps a pseudonym for Bob Dylan? 2 July Filming starts and number of new actors has been added: , Giovanni Ribisi, Steven Bauer, , Laura Harring, Chris Penn, Susan Tyrrell and Fred Ward. It is said that Jack Fate’s father is a president. Shooting will continue to 15 July. Enrique Morales is said to be an obscure writer from Argentine. Sergei Petrov and René Fontaine, the screen writers, are said to be pseudonyms for Bob Dylan and Larry Charles. 12 July The Argentinean writer Enrique Morales, living in Paris, disclaims all knowledge of, or responsibility of Winds of Destiny. Photographs from the film are published in Mojo, Now! and Newark Star- Ledger. Jan Sklaroff will play Jack Fate as a young boy. 18 July The filming of Masked And Anonymous ends with the shooting of the concert sequence at Stage 6 of Ray -Art Studios, In Canoga Park, California

6.1 Introduction The Never-Ending Tour rolled on with 107 new shows. There was only four legs this year due to the filming of Masked And Anonymous:

6.2 The musicians George Recile replaced David kaemper on drums. The last part of the Europe Tour he in turn was replaced temporarily by Jim Keltner. 6.3 The show The first three legs: Main set: 4 acoustic songs 4 electric 3 acoustic 4 electric Encores: 2 electric 1 acoustic 1 electric 1 acoustic 1 electric (some shows) 1 acoustic (some shows) Starting with the Fall tour, it became increasingly difficult to categorize performances as either “electric” or “acoustic”. Many songs were performed with a mix of acoustic and electric instruments and the purely acoustic songs were played almost randomly. In Hamburg, Germany, 9 April 2002, Subterranean Homesick Blues was played for the first time since Glasgow 3 February 1991. George Recile suffered from health problems with one of his arms and was replaced by Jim Keltner starting with the show in Innsbruck, Austria, 23 April 2002.
