The new Broadcom AirForce BCM5350 with Sentry5 technology combines high-performance 54g wireless LAN routing, Fast Ethernet switching, accelerated Virtual Private Network (VPN) security and MIPS processing into a single system-on-a-chip (SoC). This high level of integration eliminates the need for multiple components while delivering the performance and security previously available from devices at up to twice the cost. “With a large footprint in both the wired and wireless markets, Broadcom is in a leading position to integrate multiple technologies to deliver solutions for a variety of applications,” said Bob Wheeler, Senior Analyst from The Linley Group. “Wireless routers with integrated switch capabilities are the next logical step in chip innovation, serving the growing number of cost-conscious businesses that require full-featured routers with the additional benefits of Wi-Fi.” Added Security for Business Networks Small businesses and branch offices look to leverage the price/performance advantages of consumer networking equipment, but typically require additional security and performance features not found in products on retail shelves. The BCM5350 not only combines Broadcom’s proven wired and wireless capabilities with comprehensive security features, but also reduces the size and bill-of-material (BOM) costs for router designs. This allows manufacturers to offer a full-featured solution that addresses the requirements of cost-conscious small businesses. Routers and gateways based on the new processor can include a variety of security features to ensure strong data protection over wired or wireless connections. The BCM5350 delivers the most advanced wireless LAN security in the industry, with built-in support for Wi-Fi Protected Access™ (WPA), and upgradeability to support the forthcoming WPA2 and IEEE 802.11i specifications. The BCM5350 also features the powerful on-chip VPN co-processor core of Broadcom’s popular Sentry5 family, providing hardware-based acceleration of encryption and authentication on virtual private network (VPNs) and freeing the MIPS32 processor for other tasks. Page 1 The Next Logical Step in Chip Innovation “Approximately 80 percent of wireless LAN infrastructure hardware sold today includes separate wireless processor and switch components,” said Jeff Abramowitz, Senior Director of Marketing for Broadcom’s Home and Wireless Networking Business Unit. “By leveraging our extensive portfolio of wired and wireless technologies, Broadcom has become the first company to combine these important capabilities into a single chip. This level of integration enables new standards in performance while enabling increasingly economical wireless networking equipment.” The BCM5350 integrates a high-performance MIPS32 processor with an on-chip memory management unit (MMU), a 32-bit processor bus, a VPN co-processor, an 802.11g MAC/baseband controller and a 5-port 10/100 Ethernet switch with integrated PHYs. The MIPS32 processor is capable of wire-speed bridging and routing with advanced firewall protection. The integrated Ethernet switch is derived from the sixth generation of Broadcom’s popular RoboSwitch family, which has shipped in over 100 million devices to date. With built-in wireless LAN capabilities that support 802.11g and 802.11a/g implementations, the BCM5350 is the latest addition to the AirForce family of high performance Wi-Fi solutions. Like all AirForce products, the BCM5350 hosts Broadcom’s OneDriver software, which offers a number of features that deliver superior performance, security and ease-of-use for wireless networks, including: • SecureEZSetup – An intelligent setup wizard that radically simplifies wireless LAN installation and automates WPA security for 54g™ PCs, adapters, access points and routers. • Xpress Technology – A standards-based framebursting technique that improves network performance by increasing the efficiency of wireless data transmissions. • 125 High Speed Mode – A standards-plus technology that provides the industry’s best real-world performance without impacting neighboring wireless networks. • 54g™ Power Amplifier Module support – A highly integrated hardware module that boosts output power and improves signal quality to increase the range of 54g™-based wireless LAN devices by up to 50 percent. Well, let's start off with a little bit of your background. You grew up in New Jersey, if I remember correctly. Abramowitz: Yeah, I did. Redelfs: And engineering degrees, and I remember-- Jeff and I worked with a guy at 3Com who he went to high school with. And I remember having a conversation with him about Jeff in high school, what was he like? And he said, the smartest kid in our high school. So tell me about high school and how you got into wireless. Abramowitz: So I guess standard New Jersey geek slash sports-loving musician would describe my background. I did play in a band in high school as well.
