CURRICULUM VITAE PROF. SALVATORE SIRACUSANO BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Professor Salvatore Siracusano, born in Padua on 19 April 1960, obtained his high school diploma (specializing in classical studies) in 1978. In the same year he enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Messina where he attended as student the Institute of General Pathology. From the third year of the degree course he moved to the University of Genoa where he attended the Urological Clinic of the University directed by Professor L. Giuliani and where, even before the degree, he carried out daily department and research activities that allowed him to prepare his final thesis. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Genoa on 24 July 1984 with flying colors, discussing the thesis: "The urodynamics of the upper urinary excretory tract", (Supervisor: Prof. L. Giuliani). At the same venue, he passed the medical licensing exam and obtained the license to practice the profession of doctor- surgeon on November 1984. In the academic year 1983/1984 he was admitted to the Specialization School in Urology at the University of Genoa and for the academic years 1984/85 and 1985/86 he won the competition for a scholarship organized by the Liguria Region for doctors enrolled in Specialization Schools of Medicine and Surgery. He carried out ongoing assistance activities at the Urological Clinic of Genoa from 25 July 1984 to 15 September 1986. From 16 September 1986 he followed Prof. Emanuele Belgrano at the Urological Clinic Institute at the University of Sassari where he immediately began the clinical activity (medical emergency – head of the Continence Office and the Urodynamics and Bladder rehabilitation Laboratory) performing urological surgeries as first operator. In 1986 he was declared the winner of a scholarship, announced by the Orthopedic Clinic at the University of Brescia, for the study of Microsurgery. On July 25, 1989 he obtained the Specialization in Urology degree at the University of Genoa with honors, discussing the thesis: "Ultrasound evaluation of vesicoureteral reflux in children" presented by Dr. Siracusano as oral communication during the S.I.E.U.N. Congress in 1988. In November 1989 he was admitted to the Specialization School in Microsurgery and Experimental Surgery at the University of Pavia. Starting from the academic year 1991/1992, he was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Specialization School in Urology at the University of Sassari where he carried out the course "Use of electrophysiological tests in neuro-urology" within the teaching of "Urological Clinic". The assignment was renewed for the academic years 1991/1992; 1992/1993; 1993/1994; 1994/1995. In 1991 he carried out an internship in Germany at the Department of Urology of Monchengladbach and Homburg for the study of microsurgery and functional disorders of the lower urinary system respectively. In 1992 he carried out an internship at the Urology Department at the University of San Francisco (USA) directed by Prof. E.A. Tanagho for the completion of a research project, funded by the Sardinia Region concerning the use of electrical stimulation in the diagnosis of urgency urinary incontinence that was published in the Proceedings of the Italian Society of Urodynamics and in the Archivos Espanoles de Urologia journal. On 20 July 1992 he passed the exam of the European Board Examination in Urology and on 4 September of the same year he was appointed "Fellow of the European Board of Urology" by Prof. M. Camey, Chairman of the EBU and Prof. F.H. Schroder, Chairman of the Education Committee of the European Board of Urology. On 18 February 1993 he obtained the Diploma of specialist in Microsurgery and Experimental Surgery at the University of Pavia with the score of 50/50 discussing the Thesis: "Radioimmunoguided surgery in the treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer: preliminary results" published in Proceedings of the European Society of Oncological Urology and subsequently awarded during the Congress of the Italian Society of Urology with the Medas prize as the 2nd best scientific contribution. In 1993 he became Full Member of the European Association of Urology (E.A.U.). In 1993, he carried out an internship at the Urology Department of Innsbruck for the study of the use of electrical stimulation in detrusor instability. On 18 May 1994 he was appointed Corresponding Member of the A.U.A. (American Urological Association) at the annual meeting in San Francisco (California) after the presentation of Prof. Subbarao Yalla. In 1994 he carried out an internship at the Department of Urology at the University of Boston (USA) directed by Prof. Subbarau Yalla for the completion of a research project, funded by the Sardinia Region concerning the construction and testing of a dynamic artificial propeller suitable for emptying and filling of the bladder in the spinal cord ingury patient and for the study of the functional problems related to the cervico-urethral obstruction in the male. The project’s results were presented at the Meeting of the International Continence Society in Sidney. On 24 October 1994 the Council of the Specialization School in Urology of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sassari expressed a very positive opinion on the teaching activity of Dr. Salvatore Siracusano, Adjunct Professor in the School, for the course "Use of electrophysiological tests in neuro-urology within the teaching of “Urological Clinic”. From 1 November 1995 he followed Prof. E. Belgrano at the Urological Clinic of Trieste. On 16 May 1995 he was appointed Hospital Assistant at the Urological Clinic at the University of Trieste and subsequently as 1st level Medical Director from 1 December 1998 to 5 March 2005 when he took up his service as Associate Professor, providing continuous clinical contributions as first Assistant and Head of the Urodynamics and Oncology Service allowing to perform various urological surguries as first operator. In the academic year 1995/96 he was appointed free-contract Professor in the supplementary teaching activity of the teaching of "Neurourology and Urodynamics" at the Specialization School in Urology at the University of Trieste. In 1996 he was appointed Expert in the Field of Urology and the Faculty of Trieste expressed its full appreciation for the commendable teaching and research activity carried out, after having taken note of his Curriculum. In 1996 he participated in the competition notice for Associate Professor (D.D.M.M. 22/12/1995 and 29/02/1996 scientific sector F10X) with admission to the oral test. In 1999 he participated in the competition notice for Associate Professor position at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia obtaining an excellent judgment. In the academic year 1999/2000 he was appointed free-contract Professor in the supplementary teaching activity of the teaching of Urology at the Specialization School of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Trieste. In 2000 he was assigned, as Adjunct Professor, the teaching course in the Urology discipline within the degree course "Principles of Tissue and Biomaterials Engineering" at the University of Trieste. In 2000 he was appointed free-contract Professor in the supplementary teaching activity of the teaching of Urology at the Specialization School in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Trieste. In 2000 he carried out an internship at the Department of Urology at the University of Innsbruck where he studied topics related to urological reconstructive surgery. In 2002 he was offered, as free-contract Professor, the teaching course in the Urology discipline within the Physiotherapist degree course at the University of Trieste. In the academic year 2003/2004 he was appointed free-contract Professor in the supplementary teaching activity of the teaching of "Functional instrumental semeiotics of the male urogenital system" at the Specialization School of Urology at the University of Trieste. He was appointed by Prof. Emanuele Belgrano responsible, in his absence, for the assistance activity of the U.C.O. Urological Clinic of the University of Trieste from 31 March 2003 to 31 August 2003. In 2004, he carried out an internship at the Urology Department at the University of Halle, directed by Prof. P. Fornara, for the study of laparoscopic techniques. On 10 December 2004 he was declared eligible for the Associate Professor competition notice (MED/24 sector) and on March 2005 he was called by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Trieste to fill the position of Associate Professor in Urology. From the academic year 2005/2006 to the academic year 2007/2008 he was assigned the teaching of Urology as part of the degree course in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Trieste, the teaching of Biomaterials in Urology at the degree course of Science in Medical Biotechnology and the teaching of Urology at the degree course in Physiotherapy. For the same period and at the same University, as part of the courses concerning the Specialization Schools, he was awarded the teaching of Functional and Instrumental Semeiotics (Specialization School in Urology), Neuro-urology and Urodynamics (Specialization School in Urology), Clinical Oncology (Specialization School in Urology), Gynecological Urology (Specialization School in Urology), Urology (Specialization School in Gynecology and Obstetrics) and Urology (Specialization School in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).
