MULLIKEN WAS a quiet, soft-spoken man, yet so R single-minded and determined in his devotion to under- standing molecules that he came to be called “Mr. Molecule.” If any single person’s ideas and teachings dominated the development of our understanding of molecular structure and spectra, it surely was Robert Mulliken. From the begin- ning of his career as an independent scientist in the mid- 1920s until he published his last scientific papers in the early 1980s, he guided an entire field through his penetrat- ing solutions of outstanding puzzles, his identification (or discovery) and analysis of the new major problems ripe for study, and his creation of a school—the Laboratory of Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy or LMSS at the University of Chicago, during its existence the most impor- tant center in the world for the study of molecules. Robert’s background led him naturally into academic sci- ence. He was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in a house built by his great-grandfather in about 1798. His father, Samuel Parsons Mulliken, was a professor of chemistry at MIT, which made him a daily commuter between Newburyport and Boston. He pioneered the study of animal communication, which until his involvement had been P rather anecdotal. He set up a logical framework that looked at all aspects of the signals used (i.e., their physical structure, who produced them, in what context, and what responses they elicited). Answers to all of these questions then helped researchers infer what information the signals conveyed as well as the intention, or at any rate the benefit to the signaler. In the case of a male songbird singing in the spring, the message was species identity, individual identity, breeding condition, and marital status (e.g., single, shall welcome a mate). To other males, it stated, “This is my territory and I shall defend it.” In this manner, the same message could mean different things to different listeners. Marler came upon this area of interest while working on his first Ph.D. (University College, London, 1952), which involved vegetation surveys of potential nature reserves in Britain, France, and the Azores. In his spare time, he collected recordings of chaffinch song from the same localities. It was while doing this work that he realized the variability in chaffinch song was not random. For example, the song of chaffinches in the Azores was simpler than that in Britain or France. -

He is known for his idea that young birds initially remember a tutor song and use the memory as a template to guide the development of their own song. He was the fi rst to show that estrogen prevents programmed cell death in female zebra fi nches. He also pioneered work on the brain mechanisms of sound localization by barn owls. He has trained many students and postdoctoral fellows who became leading neuroethologists. -

DUNITZ INUS CARL PAULING was born in Portland, Oregon, on LFebruary 28, 1901, and died at his ranch at Big Sur, California, on August 19, 1994. In 1922 he married Ava Helen Miller (died 1981), who bore him four children: Linus Carl, Peter Jeffress, Linda Helen (Kamb), and Edward Crellin. Pauling is widely considered the greatest chemist of this century. Most scientists create a niche for themselves, an area where they feel secure, but Pauling had an enormously wide range of scientific interests: quantum mechanics, crys- tallography, mineralogy, structural chemistry, anesthesia, immunology, medicine, evolution. In all these fields and especially in the border regions between them, he saw where the problems lay, and, backed by his speedy assimilation of the essential facts and by his prodigious memory, he made distinctive and decisive contributions. Binocular Universe: Putting Our Best Foot Forward March 2011 Phil Harrington The Vernal Equinox can't come soon enough for me. What a winter it's been here in the northeastern United States. Good riddance! But before we bid farewell to the winter sky entirely, let's visit some of the binocular objects that lie in and around the constellation Gemini. This month, we find the sky's twin brothers, Castor and Pollux, standing at attention in our western sky, as if to pay homage to those setting constellations. We kick things off with the constellation's best known deep-sky treasure, M35. You'll find this spectacular open cluster at the foot of the twin Castor. Trace his body down from his namesake star toward his ankle and foot, which are marked by an arc of three stars, Mu, Eta, and 1 Geminorum. M35 lies to the northwest of Eta Gem. Its position near Castor's big toe leads me to think of this as the Soccer Ball Cluster, since it looks like Castor is about to kick it right between the horns of Taurus the Bull! Finder chart for this month's Binocular Universe from TUBA, www.philharrington.net/tuba.htm Shining at about 5th magnitude, M35 can actually be glimpsed by eye alone on the darkest nights. But it takes binoculars to expose the true beauty of this object. Even when used under moderate suburban light pollution, most 7x50 and 10x50 binoculars resolve the brightest dozen or so cluster stars against the misty glow from an additional 200 fainter suns that make up this outstanding stellar gathering. -
