But the tale is not a fable; it is the amazing story of Brandeis University. For more than a century American Jews had nurtured a dream of creating a university which evoked their ancient heritage of scholarship and their gratitude to a nation which offered them haven and freedom . On October 11, 1948, the dream became a reality. Th e first Jewish-sponsored, nonsectarian university in the United States, named in memory of Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis , opened its doors on the campus of what had been Middlesex Un iversity . Startling in contrast t o the few buildings which originally dotted the 250-acre campus stood--perhaps as a portend to future greatness--a castle .. This imposing structure, designed after medieval architecture, had been part of Middlesex.
