Acting on a resolution presented by the Wicomico County Council and Worcester County Commissioners Back in the early 1970s, the idea for the creation of a community college on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore was born. A man from Kansas named Dr. Arnold H. Maner, working as a consultant with the State Board for Community Colleges (SBCC), met with local government, business, industry and education leaders to determine whether the area needed additional college- level vocational and technical training opportunities.

Robert W. Cook, executive director of the Greater Salisbury Committee (GSC), and Frank H. Morris, former mayor of Salisbury who was a member of the GSC and the SBCC, embraced the concept and made presentations to almost every local civic and community group to garner additional support for the project. The year was 1920 when a group of business professionals determined that their collective interests needed representation, and their shared goals to grow their businesses and the region required some formalization; thus, the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce was formed! Fast forward a century and multiple downtown headquarters locations, and the Chamber remains a vital institution representing seven hundred businesses and organizations across Delmarva.

This milestone would not have happened without the thousands of dedicated businessmen and women who volunteered their time, experience, and expertise. They served on Chamber Committees, on the Board of Directors and in Executive Leadership roles for the Chamber. Although too numerous to call out individually, their collective contributions have left an indelible imprint on the entire region.

Today, the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce continues to advocate, educate, and connect businesses, their employees, and the greater business and organizational community on the shore. Chamber Committees are vibrant and results-oriented, legislative advocacy is at a laser-focused level, and our membership enjoys countless events that foster quality networking opportunities.

The Chamber is excited to celebrate this milestone with two signature events in 2020. Both events will be subject to date changes based on the recommendations on social distancing as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. On September 19th, the 100-foot motor yacht Catherine Marie will dock in Cambridge and welcome hundreds of Chamber guests aboard for a four hour Centennial Cruise with three decks of food and creative cocktails, live entertainment, and scenic views of the Choptank River and the Chesapeake Bay. There are a limited number of CELEBRATING Centennial Cruise sponsorships available, and each includes various ticket packages. Individual tickets will be available in the late spring of 2020. 100 YEARS

Two other storied institutions, Perdue Farms and Rotary, also celebrate 100 years on the shore and will commemorate their milestone anniversaries along with the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce on October 7th at the Wicomico Civic Center for a special joint luncheon. This luncheon will highlight the collective contributions made to the Lower Shore and the region. Tickets will be available later this summer.

The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors and Executive leadership, are excited and honored to serve the Delmarva region and look forward to supporting our business and organizational community into the next century.

Celebrating its 80th year as one of America’s largest, most prestigious and longest-running festival of arts, culture, and heritage, this free, 3-day large-scale, outdoor event returns to Salisbury for a 3rd year on September 11-13; showcasing the best of America and the best of Maryland.

Since it was first presented in St. Louis in 1934, the National has celebrated the roots, richness, and variety of American culture. Championed in its early years by Eleanor Roosevelt, the Festival was Eventthe first event of national Postponed stature to present the arts of many nations, until races, and languages 2021 on equal footing. Some of the artists presented at the first festival are now legendary and the recordings and other documentation made possible by the National are precious. “Father of the Blues” W.C. Handy’s first performance on a desegregated stage was at the 1938 National. It was also the first to present to the public musical forms such as the blues, Cajun music, polka bands, Tex-Mex conjunto, Peking Opera, and many others. Almost a century later, the National Folk Festival is still going strong.

Featuring a broad array of traditional music and dance performances on seven stages of continuous music, folklife demonstrations, workshops, storytelling, parades, and art. There is something for everyone.

The music and dance at the National Folk Festival dispels the preconceived notions of what ‘Folk’ is. Folk is the Blues. Folk is rockabilly. Folk is gospel, jazz, bluegrass, cowboy, tamburitza, old-time, mariachi, western swing, go-go, zydeco, as well as traditional music and dance from Cajun, Native American, Celtic, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Asian, Appalachian, Latin American, African and Pacific

66 ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD Islander cultures. Your toes will be tapping and it won’t be long before you find yourself dancing along to the joyous sights and sounds of this incredible festival.

Festival goers young and old have the opportunity to partake in every aspect of the festival, with the youngest in attendance enjoying free make and take crafts and engaging activities in the Family Area. Children (and adults) will be astounded by roving animal presentations, street performers, and interactive dances – all of which make the National Folk Festival undeniably memorable.

Celebrate Maryland folklife with Mountain Maryland, a special program co-curated by Maryland Traditions, the folklife program of the Maryland State Arts Council, and Folklore and Folklife Programming at Frostburg State University. Mountain Maryland explores western Maryland’s rich cultural landscape—traditions influenced and inspired by the region’s mountainous terrain. Demonstrations and conversations illustrate the generations of artistry and knowledge behind traditional foodways, foraging practices, fiber arts, and functional decorative crafts, while participatory activities highlight community ties to traditional games, music, and dance. Also featured are 2019-2020 recipients of the Folklife Apprenticeship, Maryland Traditions’ grant program supporting folklife education between master and learner artists.

Performers and Demonstrators will also share the national spotlight with jury selected artisans. The Festival Marketplace will offer festival attendees the chance to purchase the handmade creations from the finest artists and craftspeople from the State of Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula. Offerings include items such as pottery, painted screens, jewelry, fiber arts, canned goods, photography, and watercolors – just to name a few.

Make your plans now to join the celebration September 11th, 12th, and 13th in Downtown Salisbury, Maryland.
