THE PICARD SCHEME STEVEN L. KLEIMAN Abstract. This article introduces, informally, the substance and the spirit of Grothendieck’s theory of the Picard scheme, highlighting its elegant simplicity, natural generality, and ingenious originality against the larger historical record. 1. Introduction A scientific biography should be written in which we indicate the “flow” of mathematics ... discussing a certain aspect of Grothendieck’s work, indicating possible roots, then describing the leap Grothendieck made from those roots to general ideas, and finally setting forth the impact of those ideas. Frans Oort [60, p. 2] Alexander Grothendieck sketched his proof of the existence of the Picard scheme in his February 1962 Bourbaki talk. Then, in his May 1962 Bourbaki talk, he sketched his proofs of various general properties of the scheme. Shortly afterwards, these two talks were reprinted in [31], commonly known as FGA, along with his commentaries, which included statements of nine finiteness theorems that refine the single finiteness theorem in his May talk and answer several related questions. However, Grothendieck had already defined the Picard scheme, via the functor it represents, on pp.195-15,16 of his February 1960 Bourbaki talk. Furthermore, on p.212-01 of his February 1961 Bourbaki talk, he had announced that the scheme can be constructed by combining results on quotients sketched in that talk along with results on the Hilbert scheme to be sketched in his forthcoming May 1961 Bourbaki talk. In this article we try to give a fairly detailed picture of his life and of his many mathematical achievements, as well as of his role in reshaping German mathematics after the Second World War. Mathematics Subject Classification (2010) 01A70 · 01A60 · 11-03 · 14-03 · 19-03 · 33-03 · 55-03 · 57-03 Friedrich Hirzebruch, who passed away on May 27, 2012, at the age of 84, was the outstanding German mathematician of the second half of the twentieth century, not only because of his beautiful and influential discoveries within mathematics itself, but also, and perhaps even more importantly, for his role in reshaping German math- ematics and restoring the country’s image after the devastations of the Nazi years. The field of his scientific work can best be summed up as “Topological methods in algebraic geometry,” this being both the title of his now classic book and the aptest de- scription of an activity that ranged from the signature and Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorems to the creation of the modern theory of Hilbert modular varieties. Life and Work of Egbert Brieskorn (1936-2013)
Life and work of Egbert Brieskorn (1936 – 2013)1 Gert-Martin Greuel, Walter Purkert Brieskorn 2007 Egbert Brieskorn died on July 11, 2013, a few days after his 77th birthday. He was an impressive personality who left a lasting impression on anyone who knew him, be it in or out of mathematics. Brieskorn was a great mathematician, but his interests, knowledge, and activities went far beyond mathematics. In the following article, which is strongly influenced by the authors’ many years of personal ties with Brieskorn, we try to give a deeper insight into the life and work of Brieskorn. In doing so, we highlight both his personal commitment to peace and the environment as well as his long–standing exploration of the life and work of Felix Hausdorff and the publication of Hausdorff ’s Collected Works. The focus of the article, however, is on the presentation of his remarkable and influential mathematical work. Yang Shiing-shen Che rn (1911–2004) Taking the Long View examines the life of a remarkable mathematician whose classical Chinese philosophical ideas helped him build bridges between China and the West. Shiing-shen Chern (1911-2004) is one of the fathers of modern differential geometry. His work at the Institute for Advanced Study and in China during and after World War II led to his teaching at the University of Chicago in 1949. Next came Berkeley, where he created a world-renowned center of geometry, and in 1981 cofounded the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. During the 1980s he brought talented Chinese scholars to the United States and Europe. By 1986, with Chinese government support, he established a math institute at Nankai University in Tianjin. Today it is called the Chern Institute of Mathematics. Taking the Long View was produced by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute with support from Simons Foundation. COURTESY: THE NORWEGIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCE AND LETTERS John Willard Milnor.The citation says: “All of Milnor's works display marks of great research: profound insights, vivid imagination, elements of surprise and supreme beauty.” AS the month of October is for Nobel Prizes, March has been, in the past eight years, for the prestigious Abel Prize in mathematics conferred by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. One of the giants of modern mathematics, John Willard Milnor of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Stony Brook University, New York, United States, reputed for his work in differential topology, K-theory and dynamical systems, has been chosen by the Academy for this year's Abel Prize. The decision was announced by the President of the Norwegian Academy, Oyvind Osterud, on March 23. Milnor will receive the award from His Majesty King Harald at a ceremony in Oslo on May 24. The Abel Prize has widely come to be regarded as the “Mathematician's Nobel”. Instituted in 2001 to mark the 200th birth anniversary of the Norwegian mathematical genius Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829), it is given in recognition of contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to mathematical sciences and has been awarded annually since 2003 ( Frontline, April 20, 2007). The prize carries a cash award of six million Norwegian kroner, which is about €750,000 or $ 1 million, similar to the amount of a Nobel Prize. -

Friedrich Hirzebruch a handful of reminiscences∗ Piotr Pragacz∗∗ The idea of dedicating an IMPANGA volume to Friedrich Hirzebruch arose a few years ago. A lot has changed since then. First of all, Friedrich Hirzebruch passed away on May 27, 2012. Following his death many conferences, lectures and articles [2, 4, 3, 22] were dedicated to him. The articles [1, 5, 7, 9] and the video- interview [13] appeared while he was still alive. A book by Winfried Scharlau is in preparation. These publications accurately describe the life and work of Professor Friedrich Hirzebruch from the point of view of his close colleagues and coworkers. Therefore, though initially I intended to write an article about him similar to Notes on the life and work of Alexander Grothendieck [16] (1st volume of IMPANGA Lecture Notes) or the one on Józef Maria Hoene-Wro«ski [17] (2nd volume of IMPANGA Lecture Notes), I decided to change my plans, so this essay will be of a dierent nature. I would like to share a collection of reminiscences about Professor Friedrich Hirzebruch from the vantage of a person, for whom he was a mentor in the years 19932006. In addition, I would like to highlight his relations with IMPANGA. F. Hirzebruch during the Leonhard Euler Congress in Saint Petersburg in 2007 I met Friedrich Hirzebruch for the rst time in 1988 during the algebraic semester at the Banach Center, at the old residence on Mokotowska street.
