2 Letter From the President We are DCDS: Passionate about our Profession, our Community, and our Future!

"Wishing you Prosperity in the New Year"

Dear Colleagues,

2013 was a challenging year. Thank you for your effort, energy, resilience and commitment to dentistry and our dental community. This New Year may start off with some uncertainty because we do not have a crystal ball on the economy. Yet, as health care providers committed to our profession, if we stay united and determined to work together and support each other, we will surely succeed both personally and professionally.

DCDS learned through strategic planning 'we are stronger than ever'. Our ship has set sail in a direction that ensures our future as a professional society within the ADA. Our membership goals have far exceeded our expectations while our volunteer efforts have shown our strength in giving back to our community and to each other. DCDS is the "mighty little engine" that could!

Our team at 502 C Street under the leadership of our Executive Director, Todd Philbrick, has the best interest of each member at heart. Taryn, Audrey and Namita are the driving force of our society, and along with Todd, they are always available to help you.

As the calendar changes to the New Year, we look forward to hosting ADA President, Dr. Chuck Norman, at our annual GKSD. DCDS is the "National Kick-off Site for Give Kids a Smile Day" in Washington DC. Please mark your 2014 calendars to volunteer and join your colleagues on Friday, February 7 at Howard University . Your support and financial contributions are greatly needed to make this day a success.

In March, we look forward to welcoming you at the 2014 Nation's Capital Mid-Atlantic Dental Meeting on March 13, 14, 15. Under the leadership of Dr. Tom Sokoly and his planning committee, this year's program promises to be filled with outstanding continuing education. Please plan to visit the Exhibit Hall and the Office of the Future There will also be a Membership Appreciation and Networking Reception on Friday, March 15 from 3 - 6 pm in the Exhibit Hall.

As we start 2014, let us each bring a greater clarity, a greater determination to succeed, and a renewed commitment to provide exceptional care for our patients, our community, and our colleagues. May this New Year be filled with prosperity and good health for you and your family.

My best to you in 2014.

Sincerely, Paula Paula L. Russo DDS MS President, DC Dental Society

Volunteer Opportunities

As most of you are aware, the Nation’s Capital Mid-Atlantic Dental Meeting will take place March 13 – 15, 2014. We have a great meeting planned this year – excellent speakers, hands-on workshops and programs for the entire dental team. Many of you may not be aware of how much work goes into planning and putting on the meeting and we could really use your help to make everything run smoothly. There are great opportunities for members and staff to help with and volunteers do not pay the registration fee.

Speaker Escorts:

If you know any of the speakers well we would love to have your help escorting them through our meeting. Escorts ensure that the clinicians experience at the meeting is a great one. In addition to some quality time with great dental minds, you can sit in on the course for free.

Room Captains:

Help at the door taking tickets, answering questions, make sure that things go smoothly for the speaker and attendees, and you get to take the course for free. Both dentists and staff are eligible to be room captains.

The escort and room captain positions fill up quickly so please contact Dr. Catherine Dietrich Pulse at 202-363-6177 or email at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.

Information Booth:

Questions, Questions, Questions? Help make sure our guests get the information they want to make their visit great. Please contact Dr. Scott Hetz at 202-659-2552 or email at [email protected] to help.

Again, volunteers have their registration fee waived. So instead of just coming to the meeting this year, but a part of it, and help make our Society’s meeting a great one!

Sincerely,

Nation’s Capital Mid-Atlantic Dental Meeting Committee

6 82nd Annual NATION’S CAPITAL MID-ATLANTIC DENTAL MEETING MARCH 13-15, 2014 WASHINGTON CONVENTION CENTER

WWW.MIDATLANTICMEETING.ORG7 Give Kids a Smile Day On December 3, 2013, Dr. Johanna A. Huijssoon, Give Kids a Smile Chairman, members, volunteers from Howard University College of Dentistry, and DCDS staff successfully screened 175 kids at Kimball and C.W. Harris Elementary Schools.

These screenings enabled Society members and volunteers to ascertain the ' dental needs. Treatment will be provided on Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Howard University College of Dentistry. If you are interested in volunteering and/or making a monetary donation to support this great program, please contact the Society office at 202-547-7613 or email at [email protected]. We would like to thank the following members for their participation on the screening day: • Drs. Sally Cram, Johanna Huijssoon, Alan Singer, Margaret Culotta-Norton, Robert Smyth, Donna Grant-Mills, Isabell Lass, Steven Price, George P. Thomas, Pat Grogan, Mina Tabatabai, Ms. Elizabeth Orbeta, Mr. Peter Grinc, Ms. Tonya Davis-Vassell, Mr. Mulu Gebremarian, Ms. Emily Kaizer, and Ms. Jennica Samiley.

Thank you all for lending your time to volunteer and making this day instrumental to our success in coordinating the efforts of the screening day.

Why I Volunteer? “I am so glad I came today, I was scared to see a because I thought something was wrong but now I know I have to follow up on this”. The woman who said this had a very suspicious lesion on the left lateral border of her tongue and this was discovered at the D.C Dental Society booth at the NBC4 Health and Wellness expo last February. Over 800 people were screened for oral cancer during the two days of the expo last year. I volunteered for the first time and spent just two hours there but based on this woman’s statement as well as other people I screened, I can say it was a well worth the time. I think we all do good work daily at our offices but the chance to do something extra that could have saved someone’s life- that is a really good feeling. So I encourage all DC Dental Society members and their staff members to volunteer this year. You will enjoy the atmosphere at the expo, the music, the chance to see other DC Dental Society friends and maybe just save a life! I will be there along with Sally Cram and many other dedicated volunteers who have been doing this great work for years. Please sign up and spend a few hours with us.

The amended version of the bill calls for a school based sealant program and the Department of Health to submit its records into the National Oral Health Surveillance Database. The committee’s efforts were instrumental in eliminating the mid-level provider study called for in the original legislation. The amended bill is currently moving through the Committee on Health.

Committee on Health Chairperson, Yvette Alexander has subsequently introduced her own oral health legislation calling for increased oral health education in the DC Public School curriculum. Her proposed legislation also calls for a patient navigator program to assist families in identifying their oral healthcare delivery options.

The Public Policy Committee is actively engaged with the DC Board of Dentistry on several key initiatives including the school based sealant program, improving the implementation of dental assistant registration, and restrictions on the delivery of neuromuscular blockers/ dermal fillers by general dentists.

Dr. Eugene Giannini represented the DCDS at the ADA’s Annual Lobbyist Conference in early December. At this meeting, state representatives shared their legislative experiences and best practices.

Based on our efforts with the DC City Council, the ADA State Public Affairs (SPA) Program awarded DCDS with a grant for 2014. This necessary funding will make it possible to continue our legislative efforts with the DC City Council.
