I learned to dance with Winchester MM under the eagle eye of Lionel Bacon during the 1970s. A degree in Fine Art (Painting), a career in Social Housing and a parallel career as an officer in the Territorial Army may not, at first glance, equip one to be the editor of a journal devoted to research papers on Morris Dancing. However, I have a keen interest in Morris-related research and 40 years dancing experience and this, plus a request from Peter Halfpenny, has prompted me to become involved with the production of the Morris Dancer. Timeline of Accidents
EVENTS WE MAYBE SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPECTING1 Let’s do some thinking about Thoreau’s accidents. Weren’t there an unusual number of accidents in this particular person’s life? As a toddler, in a backyard incident, he had chopped off his own right big toe with the help of the kindling hatchet. As a young man, he had helped a buddy set a fire in a stump to cook their fish, and the conflagration that resulted burned over an entire section of Concord’s woodlots. While living in his shanty on the pond, he badly strained his torso muscles in avoiding the kick of a horse. Then he waded out toward Clark’s Island in Boston Harbor and was almost caught and carried away as the tide came in; had he not been rescued by a passing fisherman in a rowboat, our guy would surely have drowned. Are there other occasions I haven’t taken into consideration? Over and above what was happening to him personally, there was what was going on around him. During his lifetime there was the wreck of an Irish immigrant vessel on the rocks off Cape Cod, described in CAPE COD, and there was the wreck of the vessel carrying Margaret Fuller in the surf of Fire Island, and there was the shattering explosion of a powder mill near Concord with blackened human body parts being pulled down from the branches of the surrounding trees, and there were the people riding near Concord, backwards atop the train, who got their brains batted out against a low bridge beam, and there was a fire aboard an excursion boat that destroyed the lives of several people he knew — and so on and so forth. -

“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992. -

Kramer © 2021 Amanda Danielle Moehlenpah ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Amanda Danielle Moehlenpah: A Republic of Dancers: The Contredanse and the Choreography of Identity in Enlightenment-Era France (Under the direction of Ellen R. Welch and Edward M.J. Nye) In my dissertation, I argue that dance—whether as practice or performance— embodies the ideologies and values of the human communities that creates it. Specifically, I posit that the contredanse, a French derivative of the English country dance, embodied a mode of sociability, which echoed the social ideals and interactive networks of the French Enlightenment. In contrast to the precise choreography and performative elitism of court dancing and ballet, the contredanse incorporated many dancers into a lively, ever-changing series of movements that disregarded class or rank. It favored an egalitarian and interactive approach to human sociability rather than a deterministic and hierarchical social order. I explore the historical and ideological communities fashioned by the contredanse from three perspectives. In the first chapter, I consider the process by which the English country dance became the French contredanse, a process evolving over the course of four translative movements: linguistic, spatial, choreographic, and cultural. -

ABSTRACT Praise Him with the Dance: Incarnation, Creation, and the Sacred Art of Movement Mariah Sky Franklin Director: Dr. Michael-John DePalma The art of dance is central to many cultures and religions worldwide, but has sometimes been neglected by the Christian community – especially in its discussion of theology and the arts. Though there is clear biblical, historical, and literary precedent for dance as a form of Christian worship and celebration, the beauty of this art has often been obscured by stigmas against embodiment itself. However, for Christians, who profess a theology of the Word made flesh, this embodied art has great potential for experiencing and communicating spiritual truths. In my thesis, I explore subjects including the significance of dance in Western Christian culture, the value of art as a spiritual language, and dance as a form of communion with God and with others. My research incorporates scholarship on theology and the arts and builds on the work of scholars, artists, and organizations that pursue excellence in the arts, advocating for dance as a sacred art. Through this project, I hope to reconnect Christians to an ancient but often forgotten tradition, inspiring a new awareness of the movement of the Spirit and the value of integrating dance in the life of the church.
