  • The Global and the Vernacular
THE GLOBAL AND THE VERNACULAR THE APPROPRIATION OF TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL IMAGERY AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF CULTURAL IDENTITIES IN THE REALM OF CONTEMPORARY KOREAN POPULAR MUSIC HYUNJU PARK Department ofMedia and Communications, Goldsmiths College, University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D. ) (C HYUNJU PARK 2003 Li'&. J ABSTRACT This thesis examines theoretical debates about cultural appropriation and postmodern plurality and hybridity in the formation of cultural identities. This is approachedhere through a case study of how the multiplicity of national and cultural identities are constructed in the processesof appropriating transnational popular musics, within the Korean context. On the basis of data obtained by interviewing contemporary musicians and young music enthusiasts, the thesis investigates the appropriation of global pop, mainly western pop music, within the non-Western context. In Part One, which encompassestheoretical and methodological frameworks, Chapters2 and 3 explore the recent discourse on cultural hybridity in post-colonial studies, and wider theories of popular music, identity and locality, from a global/transnational perspective. Methodological questions are discussedin Chapter 4. Part Two contains a case study: Chapters 5,6, and 7 present an interview-based study of the contemporary Korean popular music scene, where various musicians and young music enthusiasts consume and rework imported musics from a variety of positions. Some musicians are concerned with national cultural identity and attempt to incorporate traditional Korean elements into Western musical genres;other musicians show a large degree of cosmopolitanism; and young hip hop music fans articulate their identities, through the contrasting and differentiated consumption of transnationalmusical products.

  • HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

  • The Use of Songs in Films by Claude Lelouch: a Comprehensive Typology Jérôme Rossi (Nantes)
The Use of Songs in Films by Claude Lelouch: A Comprehensive Typology Jérôme Rossi (Nantes) Claude Lelouch became part of the history of cinema at the age of twenty- nine, when he won a Palme d’Or and the Academy Award for the best foreign film in 1966 with UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME. He directed forty- four movies after that1. The sincerity, exceptional longevity and abundant production of Claude Lelouch’s works have – no offense to some critics – built a unique, although uneven work, where coherence and unity were undeniable. Yves Alion and Jean Olle-Laprune state: We feel that, even after reviewing his films again and again, we haven’t even opened all the doors of possibilities that his work offers. We still haven’t gone tired of exploring a world whose richness and complexity are now becoming clearer to us. We are proud to place Claude Lelouch among the greatest of our cinema, along with Jean Renoir, Henri-Georges Clouzot, François Truffaut and Claude Sautet to name only a few. (Alion/Olle-Laprune 2005) If we look at his filmography, it appears that with the exception of two films, all of Lelouch’s movies have at least one song in them. But what strikes us most beyond this constant use of songs, is the variety of his use of songs. I will first describe the musical composition method and then expose a typology which can describe the different aspects of his ability to handle songs in films. 1 See Rossi 2016 for an overview of songscoring evolution in Lelouch’s films.

Posted: Mon., Dec. 28, 2009, 8:00pm PT Adler, McCarthy engulfed in WWII 'Fog' Producers option sci-fi horror comicbook 'Night and Fog' By TATIANA SIEGEL Producers Gil Adler and Shane McCarthy have optioned the sci-fi horror comicbook "Night and Fog" from publisher Studio 407. No stranger to comicbook-based material, Adler has produced such graphic-based fare as "Constantine," "Superman Returns" and the upcoming Brandon Routh starrer "Dead of Night," which is based on the popular Italian title "Dylan Dog." This material is definitely in my strike zone in more ways than one," Adler said, noting his prior role as a producer of such horror projects as the "Tales From the Crypt" series. "But what really appealed to me wasn't so much the genre trappings but rather the characters that really drive this story." Set during WWII, story revolves around an infectious mist unleashed on a military base that transforms its victims into preternatural creatures of the night. But when the survivors try to kill them, they adapt and change into something even more horrific and unstoppable. Studio 407's Alex Leung will also serve as a producer on "Night and Fog." Adler and McCarthy are also teaming to produce an adaptation of "Havana Nocturne" along with Eric Eisner. They also recently optioned Ken Bruen's crime thriller "Tower." "Night and Fog" is available in comic shops in the single-issue format and digitally on iPhone through Comixology.
