Comics Aren’t Just For Fun Anymore: The Practical Use of Comics by TESOL Professionals by David Recine A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in TESOL _________________________________________ Adviser Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date University of Wisconsin-River Falls 2013 Comics, in the form of comic strips, comic books, and single panel cartoons are ubiquitous in classroom materials for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). While comics material is widely accepted as a teaching aid in TESOL, there is relatively little research into why comics are popular as a teaching instrument and how the effectiveness of comics can be maximized in TESOL. This thesis is designed to bridge the gap between conventional wisdom on the use of comics in ESL/EFL instruction and research related to visual aids in learning and language acquisition. The hidden science behind comics use in TESOL is examined to reveal the nature of comics, the psychological impact of the medium on learners, the qualities that make some comics more educational than others, and the most empirically sound ways to use comics in education. The definition of the comics medium itself is explored; characterizations of comics created by TESOL professionals, comic scholars, and psychologists are indexed and analyzed. This definition is followed by a look at the current role of comics in society at large, the teaching community in general, and TESOL specifically. From there, this paper explores the psycholinguistic concepts of construction of meaning and the language faculty.

Multimedia artist Paul Guinan is a founding member of Helioscope Studio, the largest collective of comic book creators in North America. He started out at First Comics, retouching art on one of the first manga translations published in the U.S., Lone Wolf and Cub . While at First, he co- created Cargonauts , a precursor to Firefly . Paul later teamed up with writer John Francis Moore to create the time-traveling hero Chronos for DC Comics. Paul’s innovative art for their graphic novel Heartbreakers Meet Boilerplate was nominated for an Eisner Award. In 2000 he created online stories about Boilerplate, a mechanical soldier at the turn of the previous century, that garnered international media coverage. Most recently, Paul collaborated with Anina on the unique illustrated historical/science fiction books Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel (expanding on his earlier short stories) and Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention . His current project is an historical comic book series titled Aztec Empire , about the fall of the Aztec, with artist David Hahn. About Boilerplate. Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel , ostensibly the biography of a 19th-century robot soldier, is an illustrated hardcover book that deftly blends historical fiction with science fiction. It dramatizes formative events at the dawn of the 20th century through tales of the robot and its inventor, Archibald Campion, who thinks his machine can “prevent the deaths of men in the conflicts of nations.” Boilerplate charges into combat alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, builds railroads in Africa, makes silent movies, and more, all while hobnobbing with the likes of Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla.

2016 U.S. Women’s Football Leagues Addendum New Mexico Adult Football League – Women’s Division (NMAFL-W) – 2015 Season The NMAFL-W launched in 2015 with five teams in New Mexico. The Alamogordo Aztecs failed to complete the season, while the Amarillo Lady Punishers joined the league late and absorbed four forfeit losses before even getting out of the gate.
