(Romans 3:19) The main subject of the doctrinal part of this epistle, is the free grace of God in the salvation of men by Christ Jesus; especially as it appears in the doctrine of justification by faith alone. And the more clearly to evince this doctrine, and show the reason of it, the apostle, in the first place, establishes that point, that no flesh living can be justified by the deeds of the law. And to prove it, he is very large and particular in showing, that all mankind, not only the Gentiles, but Jews, are under sin, and so under the condemnation of the law; which is what he insists upon from the beginning of the epistle to this place. He first begins with the Gentiles; and in the first chapter shows that they are under sin, by setting forth the exceeding corruptions and horrid wickedness that overspread the Gentile world: and then through the second chapter, and the former part of this third chapter, to the text and following verse, he shows the same of the Jews, that they also are in the same circumstances with the Gentiles in this regard. They had a high thought of themselves, because they were God's covenant people, and circumcised, and the children of Abraham. -

Geneva Revisited or Calvinism Revised: The case for theological reassessment ALAN CLIFFORD In recent years, the precise character of Calvin's 'Calvinism' has been extensively discussed. 1 Numerous scholarly contributions have been occasioned by Dr. R.T. Kendall's provocative monograph Calvin and English Calvinism to 1649 (1979). The discussion seems to suggest, on balance, that a significant theological gap does exist between Calvin and later Calvinists,2 although many remain unconvinced. Various factors might explain a widespread reluctance to revise what is regarded as the traditional view of Calvin, with all that this might entail for Reformed orthodoxy. (Could our venerated Calvin be wrong, or are we 'out of step' after all?). Tradition is a powerful obstacle to theological revision. The situation may be compounded by personal psychological factors; there is a sense of security in a clear-cut, unquestioned theological stance vis-a-vis the fluctuating uncertainties of much alternative theology. A generation of Reform ed scholars and preachers have established their reputations on the strength of their commitment to the 'Five Points'. and acceptance within the Reformed fraternity will not be lightly jeopardised. Whereas an idiosyncratic individualism, and a ·unity-at-any-price' ecumenism are alike to be shunned. the true scholar will ever be ready to reach new conclusions if the evidence is deemed sufficiently compelling. In addition to the 'truth-value' of any viewpoint, it will appear all the more attractive if it possesses a distinct tendency to reconcile opposing positions. Although truth, rather than deliberate compromise, must ever lead the way, the pursuit of an orthodox via media will ever be a legitimate concern for the evangelical scholar. -

David Brainerd Fasting, Praying, Dying He lived only 29 years. He had a public ministry of only 4 years. Yet he has influenced deeply a great many influential Christian leaders and missionaries. Among those who acknowledged a great spiritual debt to David Brainerd are John Wesley, Robert Murray McCheyne, Henry Martyn, and William Carey. The picture is of David Brainerd kneeling in his own blood in prayer and fasting in the bitter snows pleading with God to lead hundreds of his pagan Indians to Himself and of his Christian Indians to wonderful revival. Over the years God may have used it to draw millions around the world to Himself in devotion, revival, or personal salvation. David came from an influential and religious New England family. Early he sought after God, but trusted not Christ, but his own works for his salvation. At age 21 he said, “I was walking again in the same solitary place where I was brought to see myself lost and helpless . In the dark, thick grove, unspeakable glory seemed to open to my view. The way of salvation opened to me. I was amazed that I had not dropped my own contrivances, and complied with this lovely way before.” John Wesley was asked, “What can be done to revive the work of God where it has decayed?” He replied, “Let every preacher read carefully, The Life of David Brainerd.” His life was often in danger. Many times he slept on straw, or under the stars, lived in cabins, or teepees, had no adequate food. He was slowly dying of tuberculosis, frequently painfully coughing up blood. -

Bowdoin^s friendship with Franklin, Washington, Revere and others fut him in the midst of the struggle for Independence; at the same time his social position and family ties gave him entree to British leaders and officials. In lyyo, his own brother-in-law was Colonial Secretary for the Gover- nor, yet Bowdoin wrote the tract on the Boston Massacre, which clearly blamed the British for the incident and sent Boston down the road toward Revolution. This exhibition seeks not only to reveal Bowdoin^s importance in the Revolution, but also his contributions in the field of finance, science, literature and the arts. He was as well educated as any American in the eighteenth century and subscribed to the principles of The Enlightenment, which encouraged iyivestigation into the nat- ural world and practice of the graces of life. To accomplish these goals, the Museum commissioned the frst major biography of Bowdoin in the form of a catalogue which will be published on July 4, igy6. We are most grateful to Professor Gordon E. Kershaw, author of The Kennebeck Proprietors, 1749- 1775, and specialist on James Bowdoin, for writing the catalogue. The Museum has also attempted to tell the Bowdoin story purely with objects of art. Like books, objects contain data and ideas. Their stories can be ^Wead^^ if only one examines the object and asks certain questions such as: what kind of society is needed to produce such a work? What traditional or European motifs are used, which motifs are rejected and what new ones are introduced? What was the use or function of the object? Beyond this, the exhibition is intended to show that James Bowdoin expressed an interest in art not only in commissions for painting and silver but also in the execution of a bank note or scientific instrument. -

He is often known only for a sermon, "Sinners in the Aands of an Angry God." This is unfortunate because followers of Christ should know this man's life. This paper focuses on Jonathan Edwards as a godly family man and on his missiological work. An emphasis is not carefully analyzed by many. The research for this essay originated from the author's desire to know more about Mr. Edwards. The texts studied are The works ofJonathan Edwards, along with many scholarly books and essays. The main modern books used are from Perry Miller and Elizabeth Dodds. All in all, the following research adds clarity and context to Edwards' legacy and to its enduring value to Christians. A CHRONOLOGY OF EDWARDS’ LIFE AND WRITINGS Compiled by Kenneth P. Minkema This chronology of Edwards's life and times is based on the dating of his early writings established by Thomas A. Schafer, Wallace E. Anderson, and Wilson H. Kimnach, supplemented by volume introductions in The Works of Jonathan Edwards, by primary sources dating from Edwards' lifetime, and by secondary materials such as biographies. Attributed dates for literary productions indicate the earliest or approximate points at which Edwards probably started them. "Miscellanies" entries are listed approximately in numerical groupings by year rather than chronologically; for more exact dating and order, readers should consult relevant volumes in the Edwards Works. Entries not preceded by a month indicates that the event in question occurred sometime during the calendar year under which it listed. THOMAS Dissertation Director: Deborah Gray White This dissertation expands our knowledge of four significant dimensions of black women’s experiences in eighteenth century New England: work, relationships, literacy and religion. This study contributes, then, to a deeper understanding of the kinds of work black women performed as well as their value, contributions, and skill as servile laborers; how black women created and maintained human ties within the context of multifaceted oppression, whether they married and had children, or not; how black women acquired the tools of literacy, which provided a basis for engagement with an interracial, international public sphere; and how black women’s access to and appropriation of Christianity bolstered their efforts to resist slavery’s dehumanizing effects. While enslaved females endured a common experience of race oppression with black men, gender oppression with white women, and class oppression with other compulsory workers, black women’s experiences were distinguished by the impact of the triple burden of gender, race, and class. This dissertation, while centered on the experience of black women, considers how their experience converges with and diverges from that of white women, black men, and other servile laborers. -

Evangelical Reform in Early Nineteenth Century America by John G. West* To American evangelicals, the new century seemed anything but hospitable.1 Many Americans had stopped going to church. Some openly doubted Christianity, preferring to place their hopes in reason alone rather than a God who intervenes in human affairs. The nation’s cities were turning into havens of crime, promiscuity, and alcoholism. Radical social reformers dotted the landscape, attracting enthusiastic interest, if not outright support. One of the more provocative of the radicals proposed a “Declaration of Mental Independence” that denounced private property, traditional religion, and marriage as “a TRINITY of the most monstrous evils that could be combined to inflict mental and physical evil upon [man’s] whole race.”2 Even in politics, traditional religion and morality were flouted. Thomas Jefferson, one of the era’s most influential presidents, scoffed in private at the miracles of the Bible and historic Christian doctrines such as the Trinity.3 Another popular chief executive, Andrew Jackson, was the only president in American history who had killed another man in a duel.4 Yet voters didn’t seem to care. In many ways, the culture wars of America in the early 1800s seem eerily like some of the cultural conflicts in America today. Yet most historians wouldn’t describe nineteenth-century America as especially secular or amoral. If anything, the period is often held up as the epitome of a Christian America—when Christianity, or at least the Protestant variety of Christianity—was the dominant religion of the state, and when Biblical ethics supplied the basis for social relations. -

The population was quickly expanding into the trans-Appalachian Westj the nation was firmly establishing itself as an independent country and a world force; increasingly the national philos- ophy became the idea that the nation had a divine origin, a divine inspiration, and a divine authority over the North American continent and any other area of the world to which it might expand.* The nation still reflected the thought of its early settlers, especially the Puritans of New England, There were fears among these people that the deistic-Unitarian influences of the late eighteenth century might corrupt the foundations of religion.
