A special thanks to Bob Bundy for arriving so early and setting up the autocross. The rest of the workers and instructors, thanks for showing up and giving your best, even on a cold, rainy, and windy day. That said, we got down to business. Lots of newer German showed up for this event. This makes tech easier for John Gates and crew. I ran the driver's meeting, and took nearly an hour because we had the time. Instructors can talk about 'racecraft' all day long, but finally we just have to get the show in motion and release the students. We ran one group of students, instead of the usual 3 groups. We ran the usual exercises, which is a great way for students to get to know their cars. We started with Fred Wright leading our braking exer- cise, where they can really feel how ABS works on their cars. After that it's to Joe Faherty and the slalom, where they exercise their 'eyes up' and peripheral vision skills. We had pizza for lunch, then it was to yours truly and the handling oval to figure out what we mean by braking in a straight , apexes, and rotation. Use all the track, people! From there it's to Pete Bristow and the skidpad, where they learn how to use the throttle and weight transfer to control the 's behavior at the limit of adhesion. The latter two events can be a fun place to disable your car's stability control. Normally we wouldn't recommend that, but in these low speed exercises, one can see how they reign the car back into control. Thanks to Kim Christiansen and Merril Gordon for flag waving duties. The final event of the day is the combined skills exercise, where they get to practice all the skills they have discovered in an autocross-type track. Once they get used to seeing Bob Bundy's 'sea of cones' and figuring out just where to go, they really enjoy that event. It was a bit too cold and rainy for a track walk, so we were benevolent. Instructor David Jackson had to test his new Audi on the course, for all of us to listen to. The day ended with lots of smiles and tired cars and drivers. We put away the wet cones and will patiently wait for yet another year of generating memories. Our challenge is to better market events like these so we can put more and more safer drivers on the local autostradas. President’s Column by Merril Gordon The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club

With the holiday season upon us we can all be thankful . . . YUK ! You ever get enough of that saccharin syrup from the me- dia and elsewhere to fill a cesspool to overflowing? Well I‘ve got something way better to further enhance your enlightened mind. I talked with Doc Doolittle on the phone the other day to get the straight scoop from one of our long time members. 25 years in fact. But I‘ll get to that later. Note his better half Gloria Buono a 1st generation Italian who‘s been hanging with Doc since high school. They‘ve been an official team for 42 years and maybe she‘s the secret reason why they‘ve had numerous Italian cars over the years. Being a classic baby boomer, Doc grew up in the 50‘s among the surfing and hot rod scene of California, Gloria was born and raised in Seattle. Doc‘s first car was a 1950 Chevy coupe followed by a 50 Ford F1 panel. He‘s always liked the early 50‘s Chevy styling and recently got back to that vintage with a purchase of a 51 Chevy Delivery. He‘s giving it a Rat Rod theme yet will still do duty as the type of utility vehicle he‘s always favored. Doc worked in the sail boat industry as a shipwright. His skills included equipment installation, repair, modification, and yacht delivery services. Dur- ing that time he skippered for the Explorer Scouts on the 52ft sail boat Groote Beer. Rumored for first being owned by the infamous Nazi Herman Goering then later owned by Stuart Anderson who ultimately donated it to the Scouts. That‘s when he first met a teenaged Fred Russell. Doc was driving a 124 wagon following that up with a 131 Fiat Wagon Doc and Glo‘s mutual interest in sailing morphed into windsurfing and eventually evolved into a manufacturer‘s rep position for the wind surfing in- dustry. While returning from a trade show in San Francisco in the fall of 1986 with new demo models, a Southern Oregon glass artist by the name of Chris Hawthorn offered to trade art glass for some of last year‘s windsurfer demo sails. While there Chris asked if they‘d be interested in buying a . Turned out to be a 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV. Gloria thought it was interesting and made a mistake in saying it might be a nice collector car. Doc worked on Gloria the rest of the drive back to Seattle to talk her into purchasing the car. He later stopped into Butch Segale‘s British Italian Car Center and asked if he‘d heard of ―Alfa Romeros” ? What model ? Doc said GTV, Butch said ―buy it or I will‖ ! Doc and Gloria drove it home the fol- lowing weekend. Doc entered his 1st autocross the following week at Bremerton Motorsports Park, named it ―Punkin‖ due to its Ocra color, and promptly joined NWARC. Later on, back at the British Italian Car Center, in the blackberry bushes, he saw tail lights that matched his GTV. That car became ―Verdego‖, their second Alfa a 73 GTV which morphed into a race car. The transformation started with carbs and cams and continued with modifications to this day. They‘ve been tracking Verdigo for 16 years now. Car has been active in SCCA Vintage, SOVREN, Autocross and Track days. Doc‘s mentors in getting the GTV competitive included locals Mac Russell, Ned Kolhaff, and Denny Piller from Portland who through their guidance en- abled Doc to improve the car in a methodic fashion. Their 3rd Alfa was a 71 Spider ‖Snowflake‖‖, followed by a 1977 Alfetta ―Wasabe‖,and then a 59 Giulietta ―Ruby‖, and another 72 GTV. Now down to the 71 GTV ―Punkin‖, a newly restored 69 Duetto ―Pistaccio‖, 73 GTV racecar ―Verdego‖ and 1976 Alfetta being turned into a rally car ‖Hoonagain‖. Where ALFA was known as Always Looking For Another, with Doc and Gloria Alfas now come looking for them ! Alfisti‘s ? Yes ! Doc is currently employed at the Dirt Fish Rally School as well as a Senior Instructor at Pro Formance Driving School at both Pacific Raceways and Oregon Raceway Park where he‘s worked for the past thirteen years. In addition he was one of the original employees at Swerve Driver Training with Ross Bentley and Fred Wright. If that isn‘t enough Doc and Gloria also provide team management for Team Seattle which is in its 15th year participat- ing in the 24 Hours of Daytona. Is that all ? No, but I‘m out of space. Let me finish by saying Doc has been a musician since he was 13 and actively performs with three different bands at his current haunt at the Owl and Thistle in Seattle, See him perform on Dec 2nd, 17th and the 23rd. My salute to two great Alfisti. Thanks Doc and Gloria. Merril Gordon NWARC President

It uses a modified C-Evo chassis from the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta and uses a shared Dodge / Fiat engine. It is rather small, fitting halfway between a Honda Fit and a Honda CRV. Most of us have never seen an Alfa Romeo Fu- ria, but if you had walked the floor of the SEMA show in Las Vegas this year you would have spotted an Alfa. Pete Bristow wandered the show and provided the photos of this Alfa. Created by Toni Bianco, an Italian living in Bra-

zil...the Furia (or Fury) was built and raced in The Ladies of SEMA the early 70s. Of the 5 built, they had differing engines; Chevy, BMW, Ferrari, and one time a V12 engine salvaged from a poor guy‘s crashed Miura. Only one Alfa powered version was made. It raced in a 6 Hour endurance race in Brazil and took 5th place in 1971 against the likes of Ferrari 512s and Porsche 910s. It had a 2150cc 4cyl Alfa Romeo engine producing 138 HP, a tubular chassis, triangular suspension arms, and Hewland Girling 4

Alfa Furia at SEMA wheel disc brakes. Today the car belongs to Antonio Villas Boas from Brazil. Toni built his first race car in 1955 with many more built over the years to come. He went to work as Design Director at National Motor Factory (FNM) who was licensed to produce Alfa Romeos in Brazl. Later, along FNM 2000 Sedan with his partner Victor Massari, Toni opened a small company called Fury Auto Sport Ltd to produce the race cars. They also produced a good looking prototype 2+2 street car, using the same Alfa engine, called the Furia GT. It was initially red but has been nicely restored as a silver car. It never made it into production. After Fury Auto closed, he opened Toni Bianco Competitions in 1974, to produce race cars for customers and built a Tipo 33 based race car as one project. They also produced the VW powered Tipo 33 Base Bianco S street car. By Fred R.

The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club The History of the Alfa Romeo Badge

The Alfa Romeo logo is clearly very unique and probably the most beautiful logo on cars today. The source of inspiration for it‘s design, was, according to Romano Cattaneo who‘d been hired to design a badge, the family on the front of the Visconti family‘s Sforza Castle in . This family insignia uses the red cross on a white from the first crusade and a , or devouring a child. A.L.F.A. used these images surrounded by a dark blue ring reading ALFA and MILANO

from 1910 to 1915. In 1913 the rule was made required the two words to be in white text only. As the 1st World War started in 1915, Nicola Romeo bought the company and changed the works into a munitions factory. As the war ended in 1918, they resumed producing cars. At that point they updated the logo to read ALFA-ROMEO plus the Savoy knots to honor the unified Kingdom of Italy. As future badges were updated, the unique use of the hyphenated ALFA-ROMEO remained until 1972. In 1925 as Alfa Romeo won the first World Motor-Racing Championship, they commemorated the win by encircling the logo in a laurel wreath. The only exception was in between 1931 and 1934 around 200 cars, (6c1750 & 8c2300) were sent to France for final assembly in Paris. These rare cars had badges that said "Paris" rather than Milano. I saw one of the French built 8c2300 Le Mans cars in 1999 at the Mille Miglia in Bre- scia, Italy. As Italy became a republic in 1946, the Savoy knots were replaced with two curvy lines. The final change came in 1972 as the Biscione was modernized and the name MILANO and the two curvy lines were eliminated after Alfa Ro- meo opened the new Alfasud factory in Naples. Eventually, the logo will change again in the future, but at least we know the history, understand what‘s behind the design, and enjoy the beauty as it is today. By Fred R.

Alfa Romeo Latest Euro Technology The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club

Alfa Romeo has always been synonymous with essential style capable of conveying strong emotions, technical research that is always at the cutting edge, plus superlative road holding and driving satisfaction, combined with the maximum efficiency of the vehicle and maximum onboard safety. The same values lie behind the Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCT, the MiTo TwinAir Turbo, and the Giulietta 120 HP 1.4 LPG Turbo - able to combine respect for the environment with driving pleasure. First off, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta’s TCT gearbox uses the innovative twin dry clutch automatic transmission designed to provide driving comfort and a sporty feeling superior to the automatic transmissions with torque converter, plus lower running costs and fuel consumption. Available with the 170 HP 1.4 TB MultiAir gas and 170 HP 2.0 JTDM diesel engines, the Giulietta TCT has the best efficiency/performance ratio in its category. This transmission can operate in totally automatic or sequential mode by manually managing the "up and down" positions using the "shift paddles" on the steering wheel. In addition, the driver can customize the car's character using the Alfa DNA driving selector to enhance its features of comfort, performance, safety and efficiency. In particular, the Giulietta MultiAir with the TCT is the most eco-friendly gas powered car in its category in Europe. Using the 170 HP 2.0 JTDM-2 diesel engine and compared to the same manual gearbox version, acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH actually improves slightly. The low running costs together with low fuel consumption make it the ideal choice also for company fleets. Also available in Europe is the Giulietta Euro 5- compliant 120 HP 1.4 Turbo dual-fuel (LPG and petrol). It is a mix of power and technology in line with Alfa brand values because it is able to combine top-level performance with respect for the environment and low running costs. Available in three different trim levels (Giulietta, Progression and Dis- tinctive) for all European markets, the new version boasts performance at the top of its category. With maximum power of 120 HP at 5000 rpm and with 152 lbs of torque at 1750 rpm, the Giulietta LPG reaches a top speed of 122 MPH and accelerates from 0 to 60 in 10.2 seconds. One more version that is available is the Giulietta flagship; the 235 HP 1750 TBi engine as part of the Quadrifoglio Verde trim level. This engine produces 144 lbs per liter of torque, which is the highest of all gas engines in this category and - an excellent feature - the max of 251 ft lbs of torque are delivered at just 1,900 rpm. In detail, the 1750 gas turbo engine boasts a revolutionary scavenging control system that gets rid of any "turbo lag" while using direct fuel in- jection and dual continuous variable valve timing. The three Giulietta models are achieving excellent sales figures across Europe. At the cutting edge in terms of technology, the Giulietta is a functional car that affords roomy interiors and superior comfort besides a safety record (Euro NCAP 2010 5- rating, with the highest score ever obtained by a compact sedan) and attentive to running costs, as demonstrated by the diesel engine servicing interventions to be carried out only every 22,000 miles. The Alfa Romeo MiTo uses the powerful 170 HP 1.4 MultiAir Turbo "Quadrifoglio Verde" or the new 85 HP TwinAir Turbo version that will debut in the forthcoming months. The innovative two-cylinder TwinAir en- gine was voted "International Engine of the Year 2011" and promises promptness and agility owing to both an output of 85 HP at 5500 rpm, but also to the 107 ft lbs of torque delivered constantly between 2000 and 3500 rpm. All with a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. The Quadrifoglio Verde op- tion has been reworked with original and distinctive styling features. It comes equipped with the powerful 170 HP 1.4 MultiAir Turbo (awarded Best New Engine of the Year 2010), offers the innovative "Alfa Active Suspension", a system that actively and continuously controls the electronic shock absorbers developed in partnership with the engineers at . Combined with experience gained on the racetrack, the system allows the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde to excel even further in terms of agility and handling, giving it exceptional driveability and top level safety. Without considering that the "Alfa Active Suspension" system perfectly interfaces with the three different dynamic control settings of the "Alfa DNA" device ("Dynamic", "Natural" and "All Weather"), managing all the applications on the car: from the ESP, steering and Q2 electronic differential to engine response and, if present, the Alfa TCT. Alfa Romeo engine development is focused on optimizing torque efficiency, maximizing performance and minimizing fuel consumption, therefore "performance never to the detriment of fuel consumption, and fuel consumption never to the detriment of performance". November Club Meeting Wrapup The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club It‘s become traditional that Park Place invites us over at least once per year to host our club meeting surrounded by their great assortment of cars and toys. On November 8th place drew a nice crowd of 29 members, including Bill & Mary Banta who‘s GTV was being serviced at Park Place at the time. Another long time member in the crowd was Gary Kenyon who made it across the floating bridge to attend along with Paul & Kristy Affolter. Some of the other smiling faces were Bill Gehring, Ken Case, Chris Papendorf, Gene Davis, Joe Faherty, Keith Willson, and Jay Nuxoll. (There were a few more Alfisti as well… is was a great gathering!) Even Doc and Gloria Dolittle were part of the show! Shannon Low, Car Dude at Park Place, welcomed us and talked about how busy their place has been lately. With Auctions, online sales, foreign markets… they have been selling plenty of cars, whether that‘s American muscle, Lotus, , or Porsche. Another aspect that has kept them hopping is that they are the only NW SAAB dealership. Shannon explained that SAAB customers are much like Alfisti; very passionate about their favorite marque. SAAB puts out some great cars but, like Alfa, has struggled to keep its path clear. They seem to be selling well in their select market so that bodes well for the future of Alfas selling rea- sonably well in the US in 2013… or 2014... The meeting covered the past events as well as current fi- nancial status (good), the club elections, a Holiday Gala update, and future events. We also had sandwiches and chips along with bottled wa- ter to enjoy but the best part was just checking out cars and chatting with other Alfisti. By Fred R.

Help Wanted Help Wanted: This ad is a little different, but I am looking for help finding a fun job. I have had great success as a production / operations manager as well as handled successful contract negotiations repeatedly at Microsoft. I have Six Sigma training and used it with facility planning as well as developing web tools that supported submission and info sharing. Outside of work, I have a passion for Alfa Romeos, nature, history, photography, boats, travelling, and just enjoying family & life. What am I looking for? Surprise me! I enjoy working with customers. I would be happy working the lines on a boat as much as managing a production space, or working a desk role supporting a program. If you know of someone who is hiring… please let me know. Call Fred Russell at 425 308 6621 or e-mail me at: [email protected] Thanks!

Should Alfa Romeo Brand Have Come Before Fiat? The Italian auto giant Fiat has had a difficult time re-entering the U.S. market this year after being away for decades. The main problem is that drivers have not warmed to the Fiat 500, the subcompact car that was meant to seize a retail beach head that would make way for a wider range of Fiat vehicles to be sold here. But not enough people are buying the 500, and I think Fiat could have put a better foot for- ward in getting its U.S. business started. The company has a number of brands under its umbrella, including Alfa Romeo, which has a more glamorous image and a more devoted following in the U.S. than the Fiat name- plate. Because of their racing heritage — and those great scenes from ―The Graduate‖ – Alfa‘s were considered exotic, upscale and cool where consumers mainly thought of as inexpensive appliances. Models like the Alfa GTV of the early 1980s ran with BMWs and Audis while the last Fiat mod- els in the U.S like the Strada competed more with Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics. When former Fiat and Alfa owners recall their cars, the Alfa people gush about beautiful designs, sharp handling and wonderful engine sounds while the Fiat folks talk about rust and mechanical breakdowns. It isn‘t that Alfas were trouble free, but for several reasons they carry goodwill the Fiat brand lacks. Indeed, for years I have heard people in the talking about the eventual return of Alfa Romeo. Not so for Fiat. Mention Fiat and people ask, ―Don‘t they own Alfa Romeo?‖ Fiat‘s master plan for the U.S. includes bringing back Alfa Romeo, but only after Fiat is established. I think Alfa would have made a more favor- able impression and stoked consumer interest better than the Fiat brand. The company sold 15,826 of its subcompact Fiat 500 cars through the end of October. During the same period BMW‘s brand sold 27,316 Mini Cooper hardtops and convertibles, which are the 500′s closest competitors. Would Alfa have done any worse? Fiat will build Alfa Romeo vehicles in China Starting in July, 2012, as part of a joint venture with local partner Guanhzhou Automobile Group Co Ltd. Company president Zeng Qinghong told Automotive News that ‖Besides the Fiat brand, after talks between the two shareholders, we will introduce the Alfa Romeo brand to the venture company.‖ No timetable was given for when the vehicles would go on sale, but the new venture would be dubbed Guangqi Fiat. Guangqi Fiat will initially produce 140,000 vehicles annually, and will likely expand be- yond just Fiat and Alfa Romeo cars. Fiat has large interests in commercial vehicles, trucks and other vehicles. Alfa Romeo will also have to compete in an increasingly crowded premium vehicle segment in China. For Sale: 1978 Spider In her day she won People‘s Choice at a concours, led wine tours, and fueled that shifty Italian mystique with her intense lip-red gloss and top-down black cap. She was a hugger whose curves were perfection. Her embrace would caress you with tanned suppleness, and she responded to your every maneuver with a zooming passion that left you exhausted yet with a hunger for more; she could steer you astray, and her idle purr could drive you wild. The lady had class! Alas, cruising home from clubbing all these years and living on the streets has been cruel. She can still run with the pack but is embarrassed at her appearance; she‘s mechanically healthy but she‘s lost her ferocity for velocity. She‘s still loved, but her tattered wardrobe, rag tag cap, and furrowed countenance needs a makeover; she‘s fighting melanoma. In the right hands she could be rejuvinated to her prior exotic beauty, where her maturity would be admired. Her family says this they cannot do. Can YOU? Do you have the heart to adopt her into your family and drive her to your home for long-term care? It starts with a serious offer at or about $2,400 directed to Brenda or Bruce Blair in West Seattle, (206) 938-8190 or [email protected] .

Start planning now for joining Alfa Romeo Owners Club USA and the Alfa Romeo Club of Canada for a joint Convention in Toronto in June 2012. Toronto is the cultural and financial centre of the Canada with one-third of all Canadians living within 100 miles. It is the fifth largest city in North America. The United Nations has called Toronto ―one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world‖ and in- cludes largest Italian speaking population anywhere outside of Italy. Access to Toronto is easy with multilane highways coming directly from the US border crossings. Toronto is less than 2 hours from Buffalo and about 4 hours from Detroit. From pre-drives, concours, track events, to galas… they have it all planned. www.alfacanadese.ca
