INTRODUCTION The Transcontinental Pony Express 1860-1861 “News was received every ten days by pony. That coming by the Butterfield route was double the time; what came by steamship was from three to four weeks old when it arrived... It was the pony to which every one looked for intelligence; men prayed for the safety of the little beast, and trembled lest the service should be discontinued.” —Hubert Howe Bancroft, History of California ROM THE VANTAGE POINT OF THE MODERN WORLD, the concept of using horseflesh to provide the Ffastest means of communication is almost too remote to comprehend. And yet so many of us are familiar with the image evoked by the Pony Express—a lone rider galloping across long stretches of grassy plains and desert, climbing the winding trails of the Rocky Mountains, and fighting off the perils of the western frontier to deliver precious letters and news from one coast to the other. When the transcontinental Pony Express started in 1860, communication between the coasts required the physical transport of mail, either by ocean or land. Letters sent by steamship and rail across the Isthmus of Panama took at least three weeks to reach their destination. The alternative land routes were no faster and far less reliable.

  • The Oregon to California Trail
Number 109 Fall 2018 The Oregon to California Trail Also Known As The Old Trapper Trail and the Siskiyou Trail By Dee Owens and Richard Silva The Oregon to California Trail, sometimes referred to as the Siskiyou Trail or the Old Trapper Trail, was a trail of commerce from the beginning, one of north and south directions. It was a trail between two territories or countries, British and American to the north and Mexican to the south. It holds the distinction of being the only early trail in northern and central California to have a history of early trapper and animal herding use prior to the main emigration period. It shares this distinction with the trails of the Platt River and other eastern trails. In the north, the trail began at Fort Vancouver, head- quarters of the Hudson’s Bay Company. The current towns of Portland, Salem, Eugene, Grants Pass, and Ashland were near the route in Oregon. In California the trail passed near Yreka, Dunsmuir, Redding and south through the Sacramento Valley to San Francis- Fort Vancouver—1845 co. The Oregon to California Trail developed from early game and Indian trails into a more obvious transporta- tion route due to the large numbers of horses and pack animals in the Hudson’s Bay Brigades going to and from California. Later the demand for animals in the Willamette Valley brought enormous herds of cattle, horses, and sheep over the route, further establishing its presence. The Siskiyou Mountains were first crossed from the south in 1826-27 by the Hudson Bay Company’s Snake Country Expedition, led by Peter Skene Ogden.

  • HISTORY of WASHOE COUNTY Introduction
HISTORY OF WASHOE COUNTY Introduction Lying in the northwest portion of the State of Nevada, named for a tribe of American Indians and containing a land area in excess of 6,000 square miles, Washoe County today consists of two of the nine original counties -- Washoe and Lake (later renamed Roop) Counties -- into which the Territory of Nevada was divided by the first territorial legislature in 1861. The country, "a land of contrasts, extremes, and apparent contradictions, of mingled barrenness and fertility, beauty and desolation, aridity and storm,"1 was claimed by the Spanish Empire until 1822 when it became a part of Mexican territory resulting from Mexico's successful war of independence from Spain. Mexico ceded the area to the United States in 1848 following the Mexican War, and the ceded lands remained part of the "unorganized territory" of the United States until 1850. Spanish and Mexican constructive possession probably had little effect on the life styles of the Northern Paiutes and the Washos -- the two American Indian tribes which inhabited the area. The Northern Paiutes ranged over most of Washoe County2 save the series of valleys lying along the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada. These valleys were the domain of the Washos, a small, nomadic tribe whose members spoke an alien tongue and from which the name of the county is derived3. The 1840's During the 1840's Washoe County was traversed by a number of trappers and explorers, as well as several well-defined emigrant trails leading to California and Oregon. In 1843 mountain man "Old Bill" Williams4 led his trappers from the Klamath Lake region of California to Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River.

  • Chapter Seven Central Overland Mail, 1850-1861
Chapter Seven Central Overland Mail, 1850-1861 Chapter Five described the opening of private and semi-private mail services over the Central Route. Starting in 1850, the U.S. Post Office Department began to extend its overland contract mail route system westward. Figure 7-1 shows the three segments which ultimately received mail contracts along the Central Route, and the alternate California route between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Figure 7-1. Figure 7-1. Map of the Central Route segments, consisting of Salt Lake City-Independence; Salt Lake City-Sacramento/Los Angeles; and Salt Lake City-Oregon. Salt Lake City (in today's Utah) was the central element in this route system, and no single contract linked the east and west coasts over this route until the start of the daily overland contract mail service in July 1861. This chapter will examine the various mail contracts along the Central Route in chronological order: between Salt Lake City and Missouri, between Salt Lake City and California, and between Salt Lake City and Oregon. Contract Route between Salt Lake City and Missouri Table 7-1 summarizes the mail contracts between Salt Lake City and Missouri that are described in this chapter. • Summary Report Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month 2019
Summary Report Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month 2019 Prepared by: Jamie Roice-Gomes and Alyssa Thom Living With Fire Program University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Summary Report | 3 NWAM A collaborative effort since 2005 Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month (NWAM) 2019 was held May 1–31, with events and activities taking place throughout the state. This 14th annual effort, originally held as a weeklong observance, was expanded in 2014 to the entire month of May. Utilizing grant funds from the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Living With Fire Program coordinates this collaborative effort each year. Additional funding, support from corporate sponsors and in-kind contributions from program partners all helped to increase the effectiveness and impact of the many events and activities conducted. This year’s message was, “Wildfires Happen. Is your community prepared?” Members of the planning committee designed this message in an effort to educate Nevada residents that wildfire can threaten Nevadan communities and impact homes, property and human life. The key to minimizing the wildfire impact in Nevada is proactive communities that take steps to prepare. Efforts included 227 events and activities with 29,032 participants at those events, while 889,854 others were reached indirectly via newspaper articles, public service announcements, social media and other methods of communication. This report summarizes the events and activities that occurred as part of NWAM and includes a list of the 203 collaborators, 38 individuals from 22 entities on the planning committee, in-kind contributions, and a list of all events and activities by county.
