Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. The summer of 2012 was long, hot and brutal, with drought afflicting most of the U.S. Most of my botanical explorations were restricted to Idaho, Wash- ington, Oregon and northern California but even there moisture was below average. In a year like this, seeps, swales, springs, vestigial snowbanks and localized rainstorms became much more important in my search for seeding plants. On the Snake River Plains of southern Idaho and the scab- lands of eastern Washington, early bloomers such as Viola beckwithii, V. trinervata, Ranunculus glaberrimus, Ranunculus andersonii, Fritillaria pudica and Primula cusickiana put on quite a show in mid-April but many populations could not set seed. In northern Idaho, Erythronium idahoense flowered extensively, whole meadows were covered with thousands of the creamy, pendant blossoms. One of my most satisfying finds in the Hells Canyon area had to be Sedum valens. The tiny glaucous rosettes, surround- ed by a ring of red leaves, are a succulent connoisseur’s dream. Higher up, the brilliant blue spikes of Synthyris missurica punctuated the canyon walls. In southern Oregon, the brilliant red spikes of Pedicularis densiflora lit up the Siskiyou forest floor. Further north in Oregon, large populations of Erythronium elegans, Erythronium oregonum ssp. leucandrum, Erythro- nium revolutum, trilliums and sedums provided wonderful picture-taking opportunities. Eriogonum species did well despite the drought, many of them true xerics. -

NEWS RELEASE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE Mountain-Prairie Region 134 Union Boulevard Lakewood, Colorado 80228 For Release on: August 18, 2009 Contact: Ann Carlson 303-236-4264 Diane Katzenberger 303-236-4578 Fish and Wildlife Service to Conduct Status Reviews for 29 Species Three of the species are found in the Service’s Pacific Region Following a review of a petition seeking to protect 206 species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that 29 of the petitioned species may warrant Federal protection. The Service will undertake a more thorough review of these species to determine whether to propose adding them to the Federal list of threatened and endangered wildlife and plants. Two of those species include the northern leatherside chub (Lepidomeda copei) and the longitudinal gland pyrg (Pyrgulopsis anguin). The Service also determined that the petition did not present substantial information that listing may be warranted for nine other species. One of those – the Sunnyside green-gentian (Frasera gypsicola) is found in Nevada. The 38 species addressed in this finding are found in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The list of the petitioned species can be found in the Federal Register notice published today or at the Service’s web site at http://www.fws.gov/mountain-prairie/endspp/news.htm. Among the species that may warrant federal protection are two found in the Service’s Pacific Region: the northern leatherside chub, a fish found in Idaho, and pale blue-eyed grass, a plant found in Oregon and Washington. -

MLRA notes Major Land Resource Area (MLRA): 022B–Southern Cascade Mountains Site Concept – Slopes: 5 to 60 percent. Landform: Pyroclastic flow in hanging valleys. Soils: Very deep and excessively drained, soils formed in pyroclastic flows and fall deposits from the Chaos Crags. High percentage of subsurface gravels. Temp regime: Cryic. MAAT: 40 degrees F (4.4 degrees C). MAP: 71 to 119 inches (1,803 to 3,023 mm). Soil texture: Very gravelly ashy loamy coarse sand. Surface fragments: 70 to 80 percent subangular fine and medium gravel and 0 to 18 percent cobbles and stones. Vegetation: Low cover of prostrate alpine forbs such as marumleaf buckwheat (Eriogonum marifolium), dwarf alpinegold (Hulsea nana), Davidson's penstemon (Penstemon davidsonii), Nevada dustymaiden (Chaenactis nevadensis), cobwebby Indian paintbrush (Castilleja arachnoidea), and Mt. Hood pussypaws (Cistanthe umbellata var. umbellata). Associated sites F022BI124CA Upper Cryic Slopes This is a mountain hemlock-whitebark pine forest site. R022BI207CA Alpine Slopes This rangeland site is sparsely vegetated with lupine and scattered mountain hemlocks. Table 1. Chromosome numbers are given for 91 populations representing all species, including the first reports for Arnica nevadensis. Results of apomixis, vegetative reproduction, breeding studies, and artifi• cial hybridizations are given. Interrelationships of insect pollinators, leaf miners, achene feeders, and floret feeders are presented. Arnica cordifolia, the ancestral species consists largely of tetraploid populations, which are either autonomous or pseudogamous apomicts, and to a lesser degree diploid, triploid, pentaploid, and hexaploid populations. -

Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2. -

Vegetation classification for the Mojave Desert Inventory and Monitoring Network of National Parks Julie Evens (1), Keith A. Schulz (2), Marion S. Reid (2), Jaime Ratchford (1) and Kendra Sikes (1) (1) Vegetation Program, California Native Plant Society, Sacramento, CA; contact: [email protected], (2) Ecology, NatureServe, Boulder, CO Background/Question/Methods: Through a collaboration with the National Park Service, CNPS and NatureServe ecologists compiled over 9,000 new and existing vegetation surveys and analyzed over 4,000 surveys from three parks and other areas in the Mojave Desert and related ecoregions. A vegetation classification was developed, identifying approximately 105 alliances and related types from Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA), Mojave National Preserve, and Death Valley National Park within the Mojave Desert Inventory & Monitoring Network Inventory & Monitoring (MOJN I&M). This project’s data analyses of three park areas spanned more than 4 million acres of area, plus enabled cross‐analyses with other parks and preserves such as Joshua Tree National Park in California and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada. We used classification and ordination methods such as agglomerative cluster analysis, indicator species analysis, and Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS) to inform the vegetation classification of the park areas (Evens et al. 2017*). *The project classification report is in peer review; vegetation mapping is in progress through 2019, see Salas et al. (2016) for the mapping report for Lake Mead NRA. This project is supported by the National Park Service’s Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program and MOJN I&M, with technical assistance by Karl Brown, Tammy Cook, and others.
