When we decided to organize a show it was clear that, in line with the standard C6 format of presentation, the gallery event would have to be accompanied by web based work, the usual ephemera of stickers, badges, armbands etc., as well as by some sort of printed material that the public could retain after visiting the exhibition. In the past C6 had produced self-funded zine-like editions collated from members and friends plus occasional contributors. Made in economy of means and in abundance of passion, their format was often dictated by funding constraints. Recent developments within the printing industry have seen the start of a Print On Demand system (POD). POD allows an edition to be printed at a low cost for individual orders online. Brought to our attention by Mute magazine, this system seemed perfect for the production of a weightier tome at a reasonable cost, on a sliding scale dependent on funds. At approximately 108 pages this new format in itself demanded a wider contributing circle. Therefore, as the format changed, so the structure of our publication had to undergo a considerable, and unplanned, shift. Rather than the self produced themed xeroxed zine, the new project would have been the result of an open call posted online to several net lists from which it was disseminated widely and randomly. A call was formulated and sent out at the end of July 2005. We worked motivated by a clear objective, which is also the aim of this book: to offer a fast, immediate, snapshot of the DiY art slash activism field. Needless to say there is nothing definitive about this collection. It is a cross section of a moment, an instant book born out of the curiosity to see which realities, individual and collective, would reply when prompted by keywords such as tactical and DiY art. Another motivating factor was to operate a transferal of media, to disseminate on paper that which until this moment had been (mostly) available to an internet- savvy audience. The replies we received from all over the world were enthusiastic. Immersed in a stream of proposals we realised that our task was to let chance take over. This adherence to a 008 // DiY INTRODUCTION // DiY SURVIVAL philosophy of casual encounters is totally in keeping with C6 practice. C6 have been a self funded collective, involved with the invention of gallery spaces and with reaching potential audiences where there were none. Therefore, it seemed fitting that this book would be concerned with the art of DiY, DiY art practices, general subversion and forms of intelligent sabotage of the cultural markets. Under the umbrella of DiY we have found a wide span of practices, actions, events, enterprises and issues, which by definition have one main thing in common: they all lack institutional acknowledgment. They therefore rely on an unexpected use of resources, personal and community endeavours, smart use of creativity, oblique thinking and quick-paced solutions. As everybody knows, scarcity of institutional support often affects funding revenue. This, in turn, cannot but reflect upon the art enterprise in question. In other words, the lack of funding is a media in itself, insofar as it dictates the dynamics and the timing of the process of creation, the chosen media and how this engages the audience. DiY opens up new possibilities of connections - artistic, cultural, personal and social, that would remain otherwise unexplored. DiY practice is therefore a political one. This book delivers a mix of Theory, Case Studies and “How To...” in keeping with the tone and practice of C6. We were interested in true DiY practices, such as step by step instructions manuals of kind, promoting collective awareness, circulating practical and subversive knowledge and disseminating real know-hows, against the egotrip of The Artist and cultural markets.     Analysis A “clean city”: the Olympic Games and civil liberties Chris Jones Introduction In 2005, the UK won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Seven years later, the Games are due to begin, but they are not without controversy. Sponsors of the Games – including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Cadbury’s, BP and, perhaps most controversially, Dow Chemical [1] – were promised “what is chillingly called a ‘clean city’, handing them ownership of everything within camera distance of the games.” [2] In combination with measures put in place to deal with what have been described as the “four key risks” of terrorism, protest, organised crime and natural disasters, [3] these measures have led to a number of detrimental impacts upon civil liberties, dealt with here under the headings of freedom of expression; freedom of movement; freedom of assembly; and the right to protest. The Games will be hosted in locations across the country, but primarily in London, which is main the focus of this analysis. Laying the groundwork Following victory for the bid to host the Games, legislation – the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 – was passed “to make provision in connection with the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games that are take place in London in the year 2012.” [4] It is from here that limitations on freedom of expression have come, as well as some of the limitations on freedom of movement that stem from the introduction of “Games Lanes” to London’s road system. Policing and security remains the responsibility of the national and local authorities.

She wrote back and said, ‘Monte Cazazza is a Genesis Breyer P-Orridge in conversation sick, dangerous, sociopathic individual. Why, with Mark Beasley once, Monte came to an art opening dressed like a woman in his long coat, carrying a briefcase and waving a Magnum revolver. In the briefcase was a dead cat and he locked the doors, held everybody in the art opening at gunpoint, took the cat out, poured lighter fl uid on it and set it on fi re. Oh, and the stench fi lled the room. He just started to laugh and then he left again. You don’t want to know this person!’ Wrong. (laughs) We did wantwant to know this person. Of course, once we heard how awful he was, we decided to correspond with Monte. We used to send each other the most grotesque and unpleasant things we could think of. One time, we sent him a big padded envelope and inside it were a pint of maggots and chicken legs and offal from the butcher, mixed up with pornography and so on. By the time it got to California to his P.O. Box, it stank! He was temporarily restrained by the security at the post offi ce.

The chapter argues that such a symbolic resource brings both opportunities and risks. Through a literature review, the chapter demonstrates how brands re­ late to boycott/brand rejection, buycott, discursive, and lifestyle political consumerism. The concluding discussion suggests topics for future research. Keywords: boycott, buycott, discursive, labelling, lifestyle A columnist for the New York Times recently argued that online campaigns “against brands have become one of the most powerful forces in business, giving customers a huge megaphone with which to shape corporate ethics and practices, and imperiling some of the most towering figures of media and industry.”1 Regardless if he is correct or not in his assessment of the strong power of brand-focused online activism, without a doubt brands play imperative roles as targets and arenas for political consumerism, par­ ticularly in present times.
