As promised in the last volume of the Marriage Registers of Derbyshire, the marriage records of St. Alkmund's form the first instalment of the Registers of the County Town. The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I. Church Broughton Parish, Derbyshire: An oral history, 1900-1940 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Janet Arthur De Montfort University June 2019 Abstract This study is an oral history of a Derbyshire dairying parish during the first forty years of the twentieth century. The aim was to discover the nature and cohesion of society in a parish with no resident lord of the manor, the effects on the parish of changes in agricultural practice and the impact of government interventions on the lives of individuals. The lives of residents were affected by the history and layout of the parish, based on the geography and previous ownership. Having no resident lord of the manor generated a social structure with three layers: firstly, seven key people, outsiders who did not own land, secondly, networks of small landowners and artisans, who had lived there for generations, finally, labourers, many also families of long standing. Religion was important in supporting this social structure. Being an ‘open’ parish had enabled a chapel to be built and the provision of a school, though not all children attended this school. Through widespread ownership, there was a freedom to live and work without being beholden to neighbouring estates, as alternative employment could be found elsewhere for any surplus workers. Mechanisation improved farming practice, but, though government intervention during the First World War helped, the downturn afterwards and competition between farmers meant dairying was precarious, until the foundation of the Milk Marketing Board in 1933 to control production and price. The sale of the Duke of Devonshire’s farms in 1918 to the occupiers and the County Council removed the prestige that his tenants had enjoyed. -

HELEN'S, DERBY INTRODUCTION Today, St Helen's House, which stands on King Street, Derby, is a well known Grade I listed property built c1767. Opposite stand buildings of inferior architectural quality but they, and the land on which they stand, are of far greater importance to the history of Derby. It was here that the oratory and priory cell of St Helen's was founded cl 137 and it was fiom here that the Augustinian monks founded their new monastery at Darley Abbey and where they settled a few years later. St Helen's was then refounded as a hospital. After its closure in 1538, as part of the Dissolution of Darley Abbey, the buildings and precinct ofSt Helen's were sold into private hands. -

ETWALL PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFEGUARDING POLICY 1 Introduction and Context 1.1 Our responsibilities Etwall Primary School fully recognises its responsibilities for child protection and safeguarding, and this policy sets out how the school will deliver these responsibilities. This policy should be read in conjunction with ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ (2013), which is statutory guidance to be read and followed by all those providing services for children and families, including those in education. The guidance is available via the following link: http://www.workingtogetheronline.co.uk/index.html Furthermore, we will follow the procedures set out by the Derbyshire Safeguarding Children’s Board: http://derbyshirescbs.proceduresonline.com/index.htm In accordance with the above procedures, the school carries out an annual audit of its safeguarding provision and sends a copy to the Local Authority as required by the guidance ‘Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment’ (2007). 1.2 Our Principles Safeguarding arrangements in our school are underpinned by two key principles: safeguarding is everyone's responsibility: all staff, governors and volunteers should play their full part in keeping children safe; and a child-centred approach: a clear understanding of the needs and views of children. 1.3 Our Policy There are 6 main elements to our policy, which are described in the following sections: The types of abuse that are covered by the policy; The signs of abuse that staff and volunteers should look out for; Roles and responsibilities for safeguarding; Expectations of staff and volunteers with regard to safeguarding, and the procedures and processes that should be followed, include the support provided to children; How the school will ensure that all staff and volunteers are appropriately trained, and checked for their suitability to work within the school; How the policy will be managed and have its delivery overseen. -

WOLVERHAMPTON CHRONICLE 1860 to 1869 1 4 January 1860 STAFFORDSHIRE QUARTER SESSIONS STEALING IRON AT SEDGLEY George Hughes, boatman, indicted for stealing 56 lbs of iron, the property of the London and North Western Railway Company, at Sedgley, was found guilty and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. 2 18 January 1860 TIPTON DISTRESSING OCCURRENCE On Tuesday, an inquest was held at Swan Village on the body of Joseph Timmins, a boatman 20 years of age. On the preceding Saturday morning, deceased, in company with a man named William Smith, was on the canal with an empty boat, going to Tipton. When past Dudley Port, and near the canal bridge there, they came to a turn in the course of the canal and, meeting with another boat, a collision ensued between the two. Deceased, who stood up in the end of his own boat, fell into the water, and being able to swim, kept himself afloat until his companion, Smith, had nearly reached the side where he was, but at this moment he sank to the bottom of the canal, overcome, it is supposed, by the effects of the cold. Smith at once got out the body of deceased, and calling for help, a man named Griffiths, in the employ of the Canal Company, came up, and seeing that deceased was insensible, merely blew down his throat. This producing no apparent effect, he said, “I don't see that there's any life in him, and I'll take him to Tipton”. This course was pursued, and after taking the deceased to an office by the canal side, where he was laid still breathing, poor Timmins was conveyed to a public house in Tipton, a distance from this office of more than 300 yards.
