Introduction 1.1. Ashfield, Broxtowe, Erewash, Gedling, Nottingham City and Rushcliffe Councils are working jointly in order to prepare evidence to support the emerging aligned Core Strategies and Local Development Frameworks within their districts. Nottinghamshire County Council is assisting in this work. Part of the evidence base will be to inform the authorities about suitable settlements for the location of appropriate levels of development. 1.2. The aim of any spatial development strategy is to ensure that new development takes place at the appropriate scale in the most sustainable settlements. Most development should be concentrated within those settlements with the largest range of shops and services with more limited development within local service centres and villages. -

Dear Friends The next Darley Neighbourhood Forum will take place on: Wednesday 10 October 2012 at Landau Forte College, Fox Street Making Darley Stronger and Safer The Darley Forum meets every three months and aims to give residents an opportunity to have a say on issues that affect the local community. The meeting will be attended by your three local ward Councillors and officers from a variety of local service providers. The Safer Neighbourhood Team will be available from 6:30 for one to one discussions and will provide an update on activities in Darley. You will also be able to discuss Darley Safer Neighbourhood Team Policing priorities. People from Derby Council’s planning department will be available from 6.30 to 7.00pm to consult with you on the Derby Core Strategy, an important planning document that determines development strategy for the next 15 years. What’s happening in Darley As always you will have the opportunity to meet other people who care about the Darley neighbourhood and raise your views and concerns relating to Darley This booklet includes: a copy of the agenda for the 10th October, ‘You said we did’ feedback from the last meeting, an update on Board activity and useful contact details. As promised in the last volume of the Marriage Registers of Derbyshire, the marriage records of St. Alkmund's form the first instalment of the Registers of the County Town. The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I. Church Broughton Parish, Derbyshire: An oral history, 1900-1940 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Janet Arthur De Montfort University June 2019 Abstract This study is an oral history of a Derbyshire dairying parish during the first forty years of the twentieth century. The aim was to discover the nature and cohesion of society in a parish with no resident lord of the manor, the effects on the parish of changes in agricultural practice and the impact of government interventions on the lives of individuals. The lives of residents were affected by the history and layout of the parish, based on the geography and previous ownership. Having no resident lord of the manor generated a social structure with three layers: firstly, seven key people, outsiders who did not own land, secondly, networks of small landowners and artisans, who had lived there for generations, finally, labourers, many also families of long standing. Religion was important in supporting this social structure. Being an ‘open’ parish had enabled a chapel to be built and the provision of a school, though not all children attended this school. Through widespread ownership, there was a freedom to live and work without being beholden to neighbouring estates, as alternative employment could be found elsewhere for any surplus workers. Mechanisation improved farming practice, but, though government intervention during the First World War helped, the downturn afterwards and competition between farmers meant dairying was precarious, until the foundation of the Milk Marketing Board in 1933 to control production and price. The sale of the Duke of Devonshire’s farms in 1918 to the occupiers and the County Council removed the prestige that his tenants had enjoyed. -

ST.AFFORDSRIR~, Collegiate Churches, ten Priories, and six Nunneries, whilst the massive remains of fourteen military strongholds are still more or less evident. The Benedictines early established themselves at Burton Abbey, in 1002, and at the Priory of Lapley a few years afterwards. 1'hey also had foundations at the Abbey of Calwich, and the Priories ofTutbury, Blythe bury, Can well, and Sand well, together with the Nunneries of Farewell and Blackladies. The Augustinian Canons built the Abbeys of Ronton and Roccster, and had besides the Priories of Trentham, Stone, Stafford and St. Thomas at Lichfield. The Cistercian Order boasted of the three Abbeys of Croxden, Abbey Hulton, and Dieu la Cresse and they also . had a monastery at Radmore, in the forest of Cannock. The Cluniac monks never gained a footing in the county, but the remains of Dudley Priory, founded in 1140, just outside the border line still assert their near presence. Of the various orders of Friars, the Grey Friars were repre sented at Lichfield and Stafford, the Austin Friars at Stafford only. 1'he Knights Templar had a Preceptory at Keele, and also lands at Stoke. In Parish Churches, however, Staffordshire was not so richly endowed as many other counties, the approximate numbers, at the time of "the Domesday Survey, amounting only to about 28 or 30, though during the later Norman period the number increased at a rapid rate. The following were formerly Collegiate Churches, viz., . ·wol verhampton, Tettenhall, Gnosall, Lichfield, Penkridge, Stafford, &c. Tho mcdimval military remains comprise the Castles of Stafford, Wednesbmy, Chartley, Dudley, Alton, 1'utbury, Eccleshall, Caverswall, Heyleigh, Lichfield, Chesterton, N ~w castle, Stourton, and Audley, some of which have absolutely disappeared, whilst others frown formidably even in their ruin. -
