A CJP Project Inspire & JDC Entwine Trip: Inside India December 18-27, 2018 Participants must stay together as a group at all times and cannot travel around unaccompanied. During our trip to India, we will focus on connecting with and learning about the Bene Israel Indian Jewish community; a geographically isolated, ancient Jewish people primarily based in Mumbai, which traces its roots back to 586 B.C.E. We will travel the Mumbai region together, learn about programs initiated by JDC, and engage in cultural exchange with Indian Jewish young adults. This will allow us to gain a glimpse into different Jewish Indian perspectives and understand a little bit more about this historical community. India has a rich history of religious tolerance, and Jews have been able to practice their faith freely here for over 2,000 years. India’s huge population, extensive levels of poverty, and limited government-run social services have created significant social challenges. This has led to a collaboration between the Jewish community and JDC in which they created a community-based social welfare system. We’ll learn how Israel's work is interwoven throughout this hustling and bustling Indian metropolitan and the different ways in which Israel has become involved in humanitarian aid work and development across this region. Israel and India established full diplomatic relations in 1992. However, even before that, Israel had a Consulate in Mumbai, operating since 1953. Today, India is an important partner to Israel in the areas of politics, commerce, science and culture. MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation, was established in 1958 as a manifestation of the Jewish concept of tikkun olam – repairing the world.

Critical Philosophy of Halakha (Jewish Law): The Justification of Halakhic Norms and Authority Yonatan Yisrael Brafman Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Yonatan Yisrael Brafman All rights reserved ABSTRACT Critical Philosophy of Halakha (Jewish Law): The Justification of Halakhic Norms and Authority Yonatan Brafman Contemporary conflicts over such issues as abortion, same-sex marriage, circumcision, and veiling highlight the need for renewed reflection on the justification of religious norms and authority. While abstract investigation of these questions is necessary, inquiry into them is not foreign to religious traditions. Philosophical engagement with these traditions of inquiry is both intellectually and practically advantageous. This does not demand, however, that these discussions be conducted within a discourse wholly internal to a particular religious tradition; dialogue between a religious tradition and philosophical reflection can be created that is mutually beneficial. To that end, this dissertation explores a central issue in philosophy of halakha (Jewish law): the relation between the justification of halakhic norms and halakhic-legal practice. A central component of philosophy of halakha is the project of ta’amei ha-mitzvot (the reasons for the commandments). Through such inquiry, Jewish thinkers attempt to demonstrate the rationality of Jewish religious practice by offering reasons for halakhic norms. At its best, it not only seeks to justify halakhic norms but also elicits sustained reflection on issues in moral philosophy, including justification and normativity. Still, there is a tendency among its practitioners to attempt to separate this project from halakhic-legal practice.

The Halakhist as Creator: Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik’s Halakhic Man Rabbi Reuven Ziegler mong the ranks of modern Jewish thinkers, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik (1903–1993) holds a special place. A talmudist of the first Arank and a profound expositor of the Bible, Midrash, and other Jewish texts, he also brings to his writings an academic training in philosophy and broad erudition in Western culture. His highly distinctive and cre- ative works explore the meaning and depth of Jewish religiosity, while at the same time speaking to the general human condition. Born into an illustrious family of Lithuanian rabbinic schol- ars, Rabbi Soloveitchik was raised in small towns in Eastern Europe, where he received intensive talmudic training at the hands of his father. In his twenties, breaking with family tradition, he pursued a university education, earning a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Berlin. Upon immigrating to America in 1932, he was appointed rabbi of the Orthodox community of Boston. In 1941, he succeeded his father as a rosh yeshiva at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University in New York, continuing 271 Books of the People.indd 271 12/15/16 7:55 PM Rabbi Reuven Ziegler to shuttle weekly between Boston and New York for over four decades. • September 2019 Lamb, Shepherd, King
September 2019 Lamb, Shepherd, King By Dave Buller, Associate Pastor The Bible uses a variety of ways to speak about God. Recently, I was reading in Revela- tion and came across the following verse: NIV Revelation 7:17 17For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” Lamb. Shepherd. King. Three titles that describe the Almighty. Each one gives us insight into who God is and how He works. Jesus is the “lamb”. He came to serve (Mark 10:45). He gives his life up. He is the blood sacrifice. Men and women throughout time and distance have sinned against God, so there was a penalty that had to be paid. Jesus paid it. He was the only perfect sacrifice, and he was willing to serve in this way. The lamb had to die. Ironically, the lamb is also called a shepherd. Jesus is the shepherd (John 10). He cares for his sheep. There is something profound here about the nature of God that every human being, even the toughest of men and wom- en have a longing for: someone who cares for them. There comes a point in everyone’s life when we need someone to care for us, protect us from the wolves, feed us, lead us to water. This is what a shepherd does. A shepherd cares for the sheep. In Revelation 7:17 above, it mentions that the “Lamb” is at the “center of the throne.” Who sits on the throne? The king.

  • Daniel Mackler Phenomenology of Hiyuv out of the Sources of Ethics
1 Daniel Mackler Phenomenology of Hiyuv Out of the Sources of Ethics: Joseph Soloveitchik and Mara Benjamin Introduction The traditional Jewish conviction that hiyuv (religious legal obligation) is central to the spiritual life was received by turns with confusion, indifference, and hostility in the modern Christian West. In contrast to the particularity of hiyuv, Jewish philosophy of religion — by tendency or definition — often seeks to make itself intelligible to a “universal” (or Protestant) audience. Martin Buber’s antinomianism, Abraham Joshua Heschel’s corrective against pan- halakhism, and Michael Wyschogrod’s sidelining of rabbinic Judaism surely are not incidental to their enthusiastic reception among Christian thinkers. Even philosophers of halakha such as Eliezer Berkovits and Yeshayahu Leibowitz fell short of exploring hiyuv as a major locus of affective spiritual experience. All this is to note that the Jewish world has not been blessed with a voluminous “phenomenology of hiyuv” literature — literature which, in the service of explicating the immediacy of hiyuv and the interaction of the obligated Jew with her world, takes up Edmund Husserl’s famous call away from third- personal remote abstractions and “back to the things themselves.”1 Joseph Soloveitchik’s Halakhic Man (1944)2 is one exception; in Mara Benjamin’s The Obligated Self,3 we now have another.4 1 Edmund Husserl, Logical Investigations, trans. OLAM's year-round community includes over 50 Jewish and Israeli organizations serving the world's most vulnerable people as well as individual Jews working in the fields of global service, international development, and humanitarian aid. Together, we galvanize the global Jewish community's commitment to addressing the world's most pressing challenges. We are excited to welcome over 75 people from 45 different institutions - 60% of whom are Focal Point first-timers! (Ethics of the Fathers 1:14)." 4 www.olamtogether.org To live a life of responsibility, according to Hillel, we must be attentive to our own needs, act with a sense of obligation towards each other, and respond with urgency to the questions of the day. With this in mind, we will begin Focal Point by exploring sustainable practices of self-care and connecting as individuals.
