Ctie ?B#Betog 1995 The BG News "Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence" Sunny high of 65 Tuesday, April 11, 1995 Bowling Green, Ohio Volume 82, Issue 131 April Showers Bring Standing Water Controversial principal plans University visit Lindsey Kraut The BC News Joe Clark, the subject of the movie Lean on Me starring Morgan Freeman, will speak at the University tonight. Clark will discuss his controversial high school discipline methods in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom at 8 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. Clark is the principal who used methods to discipline the students in a New Jersey high school that brought on national attention. The ti- tle of his speech is "Education: Disgrace to Amazing Grace." He gained attention by carrying around a Louisville slugger base- ball bat In one hand while directing students through a bullhorn in the other. He forbade the wearing of gang colors and hats and eliminated tardiness and abusive language in school. "Discipline is the ultimate tenet of education," Clark said. "If there is no discipline, no learning can take place." While many have praised Clark"s methods, others do not believe his harshness is necessary. "I do not think a baseball bat and bullhorns are necessary," said Kathy Faber, a professor in the College of Education. "Violence begets violence." Faber has had experience in urban schools and said she believes other approaches may be better to ensure success from students. Although Clark is said to be controversial, some members of the The BC Newi/Rs» Wclnncr University look forward to Clark's visit. • Pitchers with Two Appearances in One Game
Pitchers with Two Appearances in One Game By Jim Weigand Since 1952 (Retrosheet span), pitchers have made two appearances in one game at least 25 times. That is, a pitcher moved to another position for at least one batter, only to return to the mound later that game. Although two were stunts, most of these were strategic moves. Two pitchers did it twice – Sam McDowell and Roger McDowell. Alvin Dark employed this strategy five times as manager. This strategy can make accounting a challenge. Twice in 1970 Sam McDowell was credited with a game started and a game finished in the same game. Billy Pierce (1953), Tom Poholsky (1955) and Steve Blass (1968) also accomplished this. The rules do prohibit a winning pitcher from receiving credit for a save, so there can be no chance of that. These pitchers were credited with only one appearance. The following is a listing of all twenty-four known instances and an explanation of each game: No 1949-Present Date DH Team Pos Manager Note 1 Haddix, Harvey 9/28/1952 SL-N p-rf-p Stanky, Eddie GS 2 Pierce, Billy 6/25/1953 Chi-A p-1b-p Richards, Paul GS+GF 3 Freeman, Hersh 6/3/1955 Cin-N p-3b-p Tebbetts, Birdie 4 Poholsky, Tom 8/14/1955 SL-N p-lf-p Walker, Harry GS+GF 5 Gomez, Ruben 8/4/1957 1 NY-N p-lf-p Rigney, Bill 6 O'Dell, Billy 6/6/1965 2 Mil-N p-1b-p Bragan, Bobby GF 7 McBean, Al 8/18/1965 Pit-N p-lf-p Walker, Harry GF 8 Paul, Mike 6/7/1968 Cle-A p-1b-p Dark, Alvin GF 9 Blass, Steve 8/31/1968 Pit-N p-lf-p Shepard, Larry GS+GF 10 Williams, Stan 5/25/1969 Cle-A p-3b-p Dark, Alvin GF 11 Selma, Dick 6/28/1970

2013 POSTSEASON MEDIA INFORMATION CREDENTIAL PICKUP: Credentials for the 2013 A.L. Wild Card game approved in advance can be picked up at Media Gate B, located behind the LF foul pole along Gateway Plaza. Employee Gate D, located behind the home plate area, will be used for all credential distribution and media access for any ALDS, ALCS or World Series games hosted at Progressive Field. Only applications submitted through MLB’s Online Credential System will be consid- ered. Media Gates B and D will open to credentialed media members approximately 6 hours before first pitch and as necessary on official Workout Days. PARKING: Due to the realities of Progressive Field’s location downtown, an extremely limited supply of media parking passes were made available for the Gateway East Garage, which is located directly adjacent to the ballpark behind the LF bleachers (enter garage via Huron Ave.) - this garage is accessible for a fee in the absence of a media parking pass and in many cases it may be necessary to make your own arrangements for parking. MAIN PRESS BOX: The Main Press Box and Broadcast Booths 1-8 are located on Level 4 of Progressive Field, directly behind home plate. All seating in the Main Press Box will be assigned according to MLB guidelines and only media with appropriate credentials for this area will be granted access. AUXILIARY PRESS BOX AREAS: The Progressive Field Rookie Suite and adjacent balcony will provide additional media seating and work space for all Postseason games; this area is equipped with internet access, power strips, televisions and audio for all announcements made from the Main Press Box and/or Official Scorer.
