Professional Learning Sessions Catalogue
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SESSIONS CATALOGUE JULY / SEPTEMBER 2017 Institute for Education FOREWORD TO INSET 2017 Hattie, J., (2009) presents six key influences on student learning which are: 1) The child, 2) The home, 3) The school, 4) The curricula, 5) The teacher and; 6) The approaches to teaching. He argues that these factors affect student learning differently and puts each on a continuum depending on the extent of the influence. His arguments are then aligned with the Visible Teaching, Assessing, Learning and Leading Model (VTALL) which reflects research-based findings that influence achievement. Though there are a multitude of variables and one cannot attribute learning to a single influence, relevant professional development done in a conducive setting where involvement in learning, cooperation and responsibility for learning are at the forefront will have an impact on the teacher which consequently can be transferred to the learners. In the light of this, the Institute for Education is organising Professional Learning Sessions for teaching grades in July and September. The courses being offered in this online catalogue are divided into Compulsory Courses organised by Education Officers, Voluntary courses organised by the Institute for Education, Courses organised in conjunction with the Secretariat for Catholic Education and School Courses organised by Heads of School. The course titles are varied but focus on providing a high quality education for all. The overall emphasis of the professional learning sessions will be to provide an engaging learning experience which emphasise on equity and social justice and contributes to the continuous upskilling of educators. Though it is educators’ centred, the aim is that the outcomes of these sessions are transferable to the classroom so that the learner will similarly benefit from this learning experience. -

MALTESE 2-NEWSLETTER 208 March 2018 1
MALTESE 2-NEWSLETTER 208 March 2018 1 MALTESE 2-NEWSLETTER 208 March 2018 New Zealand women's role in World War I OLIVER LEWIS Esther Hope, right, with her friend Beatrix Dobie working in World War 1. On her first night in the hospital ward in Malta, Kitty Mair nursed a New Zealand soldier as he died in her arms. It was 1915, World War I was raging, and the young artist had sailed to the Mediterranean island to volunteer with the Red Cross. Mair was accompanied by two friends, both fellow artists and Kiwis, Beatrix Dobie and Esther Hope.. They called themselves "the trio" and author Jane Tolerton believes they and other young women have been done a disservice in official histories. Saturday is Armistice Day, the 99th anniversary of the end of World War I – a conflict in which both men and women played a part. Esther Hope (nee Barker) with convalescent soldiers in Malta, in 1915. However, Tolerton, the author of the newly released book Make Her Praises Heard Afar, said New Zealand women's role in the conflict had been largely overlooked. "We're told that woman stayed home, but now we find out that they did very interesting things. I think that's inspiring, especially for young woman," she said. "The trio" were on an artist's holiday in the Bay of Biscay in France when war broke out in 1914. Hope, an accomplished Canterbury painter from whose works had been displayed in the Royal Academy in London, documented the period through her photography. After Malta, she returned to England where she continued to contribute to the war effort in camps and by driving trucks at Butler's Wharf in London. -
