PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SESSIONS CATALOGUE

JULY / SEPTEMBER 2017

Institute for Education

FOREWORD TO INSET 2017

Hattie, J., (2009) presents six key influences on student learning which are:

1) The child, 2) The home, 3) The school, 4) The curricula, 5) The teacher and; 6) The approaches to teaching.

He argues that these factors affect student learning differently and puts each on a continuum depending on the extent of the influence. His arguments are then aligned with the Visible Teaching, Assessing, Learning and Leading Model (VTALL) which reflects research-based findings that influence achievement. Though there are a multitude of variables and one cannot attribute learning to a single influence, relevant professional development done in a conducive setting where involvement in learning, cooperation and responsibility for learning are at the forefront will have an impact on the teacher which consequently can be transferred to the learners.

In the light of this, the Institute for Education is organising Professional Learning Sessions for teaching grades in July and September. The courses being offered in this online catalogue are divided into Compulsory Courses organised by Education Officers, Voluntary courses organised by the Institute for Education, Courses organised in conjunction with the Secretariat for Catholic Education and School Courses organised by Heads of School.

The course titles are varied but focus on providing a high quality education for all. The overall emphasis of the professional learning sessions will be to provide an engaging learning experience which emphasise on equity and social justice and contributes to the continuous upskilling of educators. Though it is educators’ centred, the aim is that the outcomes of these sessions are transferable to the classroom so that the learner will similarly benefit from this learning experience.

Every effort is done so that educators will find courses to satisfy the professional learning support they require. The Institute for Education encourages schools to use the Internal Review done as part of the School Development Planning Mechanism to identify what professional learning support the different educators within the school require in order to implement the action plans developed for the following year. Moreover, educators are encouraged to reflect on their practice and evaluate what professional learning support is required to meet the needs encountered on a daily basis. The Institute for Education would like to express its gratitude to all those involved in the organization of these courses together with the participants of these courses.

A shift from the “why” of the problem to “how” to manage the problem.  provide qualified teachers with the requisite competencies to work more effectively with students with challenging internalised (phobias, selective mutism, isolation, block of performance, etc) and externalised difficulties (provocative behaviours, fighting, self-harm, etc).  know what to do when common-sense interventions do not work, which often creates an sense of helplessness in teachers.  create win-win collaborative relationships between teachers and students.  learn to implement an action research approach to the work. TITLE: Winning without Fighting: Effective Intervention for Managing Children’s Difficulties

AIMS & The aims and objectives of this training course is to: OBJECTIVES:  help teachers take up a new lens in reading child problems, which avoids labelling or self-fulling prophecy which often condemn the child for a life-time sentence.  guide teachers acquire a more operative knowledge of child-related difficulties which will guide them to shift from a strictly theoretical/medical categories to a more operative understanding of these problems. Emily Calhoun (1994) affirms that teachers need to be willing and able to look at what they do to try to make it better, that is take up “action research approach” to their work. AR is not a rigid “method of inquiry” but a rigorous self-corrective process. Every action informs the next, allowing us to go closer to the solution.  avoid stress and burnout. When teachers manage effectively challenging behaviours, besides helping their student better their psycho-social development and learning abilities, they come to feel in control of their work thus avoid stress and eventually burn-out.
