waterloo 2011 July 4-8 welcome to youth assembly 2011 It’s Epic: Remembering God’s Future Hi Everyone!

You all made it and we’re glad! On behalf of the Mennonite Church Canada Youth Assembly Planning Committee, we welcome you to Waterloo, Ont. More than 200 of us are gathering from across Canada – from as far west as Abbotsford, BC to as far east as Ottawa, Ont. to worship, fellowship, learn and hang out together.

Planning for this event started a year and a half ago. We have worked hard to prepare for your arrival. Volunteers have helped to plan the worship sessions, seminars, displays, concert, service projects, late night stuff, and more.

This program book contains much of the information you will need for the week. Keep it close at hand for schedule information, maps of the facilities, and other general information.

In the midst of a very active and exciting week, we hope that you take some personal and group time to reflect on all that God has done in your life and continues to do. We also challenge you to consider how God might be inviting you to witness to Jesus’ love and peace to the world around you.

May God’s presence and love overwhelm your life! And may you remember God’s future.

4 waterloo 2011 July 4-8 creating community life at assembly What’s it all about? Dylan Campion and Alina Balzer Peters will be available to youth and leaders at all times while you are in Waterloo to assist you. If we cannot answer a question for you, we will connect you with the person who can best assist you. We will be available to help with discipline challenges, find lost or misplaced youth, be a reminder of assembly curfew, and help you with any other problems that may arise. It is our job to help make your assembly experience a healthy and life changing one. We anticipate that we will work together with the youth who gather for assembly to honour and respect the guidelines of Waterloo at all times.

We will hold a sponsors meeting on Monday evening during snack in the Great Hall at Conrad Grebel where we look forward to meeting you in person, clarifying any questions you might have, and informing you of any other sponsor meetings that might take place over our time together. At our sponsor meeting we will invite you as leaders to sign a covenant with us as intent of our desire to walk in relationship with each other throughout assembly. (A copy of this covenant is at the back of this book).

We trust that you have all worked on group covenants with your youth. We ask that you also uphold the Standards of Conduct listed below.

Youth Assembly can be a life changing experience for all involved and our hope is to live peacefully together as a community of believers.

Standards of Conduct All participants are required to:

• Follow the guidelines set by Ron Edyt Village Residence, the University of Waterloo and Conrad Grebel University College • Care for the residence and all University of Waterloo campus • No participants shall use or have in their possession alcohol, or any other controlled substances. If found with the above, you will need to call home and make immediate arrangements to return home at parent’s expense • Observe Assembly curfew of 12 am in residence building, and 12:30 am lights out • Observe Assembly dress code waterloo 2011 July 4-8 Dress Code We come together at this time to facilitate fellowship between our churches. We’re joining to develop a relationship with Christ and grow in his likeness. Our aim at this assembly, and in our lives, is to bring honour to God through worship, play, attitude, talk, or dress. We ask that you dress at Assembly in a modest fashion. And although our senses of modesty differ we ask that the following clothing not be worn: short shorts, muscle shirts, tube, halter and spaghetti-strap tank tops, t-shirts with inappropriate slogans or alcohol advertising. Important additional notes All residence buildings will be locked from 12 am to 7 am. Should a youth leader not be in their respective residence by 12 am they will need to call me using their own cell phone. See numbers listed below.

Each youth will have an individual key to their room, which will be signed out by the Group Leader at registration. All keys must be returned at check out by the Group Leader. There will be a $50 charge for any lost keys, no exceptions. Hopes and Expectations It is our hope that all participants would: • Experience the love of Jesus in new and exciting ways • Respect each other’s space (no girls in guys’ rooms, no guys in girl’s rooms. This will only be allowed when a responsible adult is present). There are common lounge areas in the residence where people will be able to mingle. • Care for each other; take into consideration how your actions, attitudes and words affect those around you • Take advantage of your sleeping time! The days are full and you’ll want to be able to take in everything! We understand that there are circumstances where an individual or group may not be able to abide by all the expectations. It is our belief that grace and reconciliation should be practiced more than punitive actions.

We look forward to the Assembly and meeting you all very soon! Alina Balzer-Peters, Community Life Facilitator Cell # 519-781-5589 Dylan Campion, Community Life Facilitator Cell # 519-504-0146

Name Tags are your meal tickets as well as entry into all venues. You won’t miss out on any event if you wear your nametag at all times. Lodging and Meals The Ron Eydt Village dormitories at UW are where all youth assembly participants will stay - specifically the North and West Quad. Linens and towels are provided (no washcloths). There is lounge space in the dorms for youth to hang out. Remember to have a sponsor present when youth are in mixed company. There is also lots of green space to hang out. Conrad Grebel University College is also available for small groups and hanging out. Your room is your responsibility – please take good care of it. Keys will be given to each participant so please remember to lock your dorm rooms whenever you go out. All keys must be returned as a youth group by the Group Leader when checking out. This room is for sponsors only and is intended for relaxation during the day. Prayer Room The Assembly Prayer Room will be located in the Conrad Grebel Chapel. It will be available for anyone wanting a quiet place to reflect and pray or for group prayer throughout the Assembly. Mennonite Church Eastern Canada spiritual directors will also be available to pray with individuals when requested. Worship Worship is the heartbeat of the youth assembly. The worship services invite youth and sponsors to celebrate and participate in God’s new creation by loving and following Jesus Christ. We will catch a glimpse of the new creation described in Revelation 21 and 22 through a multi-sensory experience of music, visual art, action, scripture, drama, film, preaching, prayer and more. We all bring personal experiences and preferences to worship. The planning group strives to incorporate a diversity of expressions of worship into the week recognizing the wide range of ways people relate to God, the variety of gifts we have to share in worship, and the rich array of worship practices in Mennonite congregations. Each evening you’ll have the chance to respond actively to the message by experiencing the worship space from more than just your seat as we transform it together into a symbol of God’s new creation. You are invited to take part in these worship times however you feel led, enjoying the parts that are familiar or comfortable for you, and hopefully being open to God challenging you with new experiences, relationships and expressions of worship. We ask you to join us in praying that the Spirit may guide and empower our worship together, bringing each one of us more deeply into relationship with God, one another and all creation. An Offering will be taken on Wednesday morning and will be given to the Kitchener/Waterloo community in which we will serve in the afternoon. Small Group Time Small groups will meet daily throughout the week– following morning and evening worship. Small group times are intended to give youth groups an opportunity to reflect and share assembly experiences, raise questions, respond to challenges presented by speakers (during worship and seminars), and share intimately with each other as a youth group. Find a corner in a hallway or classroom, at Conrad Grebel, green space outside, lounges in the dorms. Find a place and make it a regular meeting place so everyone knows where to go. waterloo 2011 July 4-8 Peace in the Public Polygon On Wednesday afternoon and evening, we will express our peace publicly as we serve in the Kitchener and Waterloo communities, and learn more about the area. Busses will load north of the REV (by the North-West cul-de-sac) and Lots V and S.

When serving others, keep the following in mind: • Your attitude toward others is as important as what you do. • It is equally important to get to know each other in the process of getting the job done. Take time to visit and learn from those you meet. • Strangers may ask, “Why are you doing this?” You might respond by saying something like: “I have experienced God’s love from others and I want to also share that love where I am able.” Or “God’s love for me compels me to care for others.” You may have another way of putting your faith into words, but don’t hesitate to share what you believe when asked. Supper will be at Waterloo Park (within walking distance) followed by an Outdoor Worship Service. A Prayer Walk will end our worship together. The drama This Prison or: He Came Through the Floor by John Wideman will follow at the Humanities Theatre in Hagey Hall. Engaging the Wireless Generation: The New Reality REV, West Quad Lounge #102

Facilitator: Matt Wilkinson, Youth Ministry Specialist at The Meeting House

This seminar will explore how engaging the Wireless Generation and their social spaces will be monumental in launching a highly relational and personal student ministry to both the churched and unchurched youth. The future of effective youth ministry will be found in how effectively we are stepping into their world and interacting with a student’s “digital image.” In return, you can expect insights and importantly – seek permission – to walk with them in their spiritual and personal lives.

This is your chance to set the agenda with church leaders. What do they need to know about youth in church today? What issues are youth most struggling with today? Songs for Wednesday evening Let there be light, Lord God (HWB #371) 1. Let there be light, Lord God of hosts! Let there be wisdom on the earth! Let broad humanity have birth! Let there be deeds instead of boasts. 2. Within our passioned hearts in still the calm that endeth strain and strife. Make us thy ministers of life. Purge us from lusts that curse and kill. 3. Give us the peace of vision clear to see each other’s good, our own, to joy and suffer not a lone: the love that casteth out all fear. 4. Let woe and waste of warfare cease, that useful labour yet may build its homes with love and laughter filled! God, give thy wayward children peace!

Renew your church (HWB #363) 1. Renew your church, its ministries restore, both to serve and adore. Make it again as salt through-out the land and as light from a stand. ‘Mid somber shadows of the night where greed and hatred spread their blight, O send us forth with pow’r endued. Help us, God, be renewed. 2. Teach us your word, reveal its truth divine; on our path let it shine. Tell of your works, your mighty acts of grace; from each page show your face. As you have loved us, sent your Son, and our salvation now is won, O let our hearts with love be stirred. Help us, God, know your word! 3. Teach us to pray, for you are always near. Your still voice let us hear. Our souls are restless till they rest in you, where we find strength anew. Before your presence keep us still that we may find for us your will And seek your guidance ev’ry day. Teach us, Christ, how to pray! 4. Teach us to love with heart and mind and soul. You, O Christ, be our goal. Break down old walls of prejudice and hate. Leave us not to our fate. As you have loved and giv’n your life to end hostility and strife, O share your grace from heav’n above. Teach us, Christ, how to love! Longing for Light (STJ #54) 1. Longing for light, we wait in the darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, light of the world to see. Ch: Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine in our darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today. 2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has pow’r to save us. Make us your living voice. 3. Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed.

4. Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone.

5. Many the gifts, many the people, many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come.

waterloo 2011 July 4-8 Prayer Walk for after evening worship July 6th

Prayers for our world and … ”the healing of the nations” (Rev. 22: 2) Sending Song: Lord Jesus, you shall be my song (STJ #14) Lord Jesus, you shall be my song as I journey; I’ll tell ev’rybody about you wherever I go: You alone are our life and our peace and our love. Lord Jesus, you shall be my song as I journey.

Lord Jesus, I’ll praise you as long as I journey. May all of my joy be a faithful reflection of you. May the earth and the sea and the sky join my song. Lord Jesus, I’ll praise you as long as I journey.

As long as I live, Jesus, make me your servant To carry your cross and to share all your burdens and tears. For you saved me by giving your body and blood. As long as I live, Jesus, make me your servant.

I fear in the dark and the doubt of my journey; But courage will come with the sound of your steps by my side. And with all of the family you saved by your love, We’ll sing to your dawn at the end of your journey.

Call to prayer (prayer bowl – people face northeast) Europe & Middle East Pray together: Europe and the Middle East stand in the middle of ancient conflicts. Often funded by taxpayers in Western lands, billions are spent on weapons to kill while the cost of these instruments of war could house the homeless, feed the hungry, and build communities of peace. We pray for changed hearts, and that changed hearts will prompt changed action as we seek peace together. Loving God, pour your blessings on Europe and the Middle East.

Song: We are people of God’s peace (HWB #407) We are people of God’s peace as a new creation. Love unites and strengthens us at this celebration. Sons and daughters of the Lord, serving one another, A new covenant of peace binds us all together.

We are children of God’s peace in this new creation, spreading joy and happiness, through God’s great salvation. Hope we bring in spirit meek, in our daily living. Peace with ev’ryone we seek, good for evil giving.

We are servants of God’s peace, of the new creation. Choosing peace, we faithfully serve with heart’s devotion. Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, confidence will give us. Christ the Lord is our defence; Christ will never leave us.

waterloo 2011 July 4-8 Thursday Evening Brice Balmer has worked many years with people who are marginalized because of low incomes, addictions, refugee experiences, or being of another faith or culture, first in U.S.A. and for the past 33 years in Ontario. Brice has been co-pastor at First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, chaplaincy director for the House of Friendship (a large multiservice agency serving people with low incomes), director of a provincial multi-faith anti-poverty coalition, supervisor of social work interns, and associate professor of practical theology. He has written several books including Meeting Our Multifaith Neighbours And Persistent Poverty: Voices From The Margins.

His questions continue to be spiritual: Where is God in the midst of suffering? How to we get to justice? How do we join with God for the healing of the world and its many peoples?

Brice is married, has two sons, and five grandchildren. His garden is full of flowers and vegetables; pulling weeds is a way of venting frustration; looking at the garden reminds him of God’s beauty in nature and people.

38 waterloo 2011 July 4-8 Drama Presentations Wednesday, July 6th at 8:30 pm Humanities Theatre, J.G. Hagey Hall This Prison or: He Came Through the Floor By John Wideman This is an original one-act play by John Wideman which explores the delusions of an eccentric prisoner and his surprise encounter with a Good Samaritan who digs up through his jail cell. “This Prison or: He Came Through the Floor” is both fun and thought provoking as it explores fundamentalism, doubt, and our reluctance to step out of our comfort zone.

Thursday, July 7th at 9:30 pm Humanities Theatre, J.G. Hagey Hall OPEN? Jamie’s humdrum Canadian life takes an interesting turn when refugee claimants Maria, Chavi and Sophie find their way into her life. “Open?” is a story about how unexpected friendship wipes away prejudice and fear, inspiring Jamie to speak out against injustice on behalf of her new friends. What do you know about Bill C-49? Do you know of the struggle many refugee claimants face when they enter Canada? This play puts a human face on political debates and will challenge you to reflect on how your attitudes and the policies of Canada actually affect individual lives. Written by Michelle Van Rassel, Jessica Ressor Remple, Katie Cowie and Kimberlee Walker for their undergrad thesis project for the Peace and Conflict Studies class at Conrad Grebel University College. This drama was developed in support of Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support (MCRS). MCRS walks with families seeking refugee protection in Canada through every step of the process from the time of their arrival to their eventual acceptance as permanent residents or deportation from Canada. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit MCRS. waterloo 2011 July 4-8 Building Index Code Building
