London, ON N6A 4L6 STIHL TRANSITIONS TO A THIRD GENERATION

In 1926, our founder, Andreas Stihl, a professional engineer, set out to make work easier for the professional . Today, he is recognized as the ‘Father of the Chain Saw’.

Mr. Hans Peter Stihl, a professional engineer like his father, joined STIHL in 1960 and with an industry-leading expertise in two-cycle technology, oversaw the expansion of the product line in the power segment with the introduction of brushcutters, blowers, cement saws and a number of other industrial products.

On July 1, 2012, the Stihl family business transitions to a third generation of engineering leadership with the appointment of Dr. Nikolas Stihl as Chairman of the Advisory and Supervisory boards. Dr. Stihl studied mechanical engineering at Stuttgart University where he received his master’s degree in 1988. In 1997, he obtained his doctorate in mechanical and process engineering from Chemnitz University. Dr. Stihl was employed by Mercedes-Benz AG in Stuttgart from 1987–1990 where he was involved in the development of the 12-cylinder engine. He joined the family business after working as an industry consultant in Munich between 1990–1992. Initially, he worked at STIHL U.S. as a product manager responsible for chain saws. Dr. Stihl was most recently the Managing Director of Viking GmbH, based in Austria, a wholly owned subsidiary of the STIHL group producing lawn mowers, garden tractors and electric and battery-powered .

In Dr. Stihl’s opening address to STIHL’s 12,000+ global employees, he made the following statement:

“I am assuming strategic responsibility for a very successful company, a fact that has been impressively demonstrated by the company’s most recent growth statistics. However, taking on the responsibility in a successful company does not mean one can lie back and relax. Quite the contrary. Even though we are excellently positioned with our product throughout the world and I am optimistic about the future, there are further challenges to be faced. We will adhere to our time proven strategy; organic growth through new product development, technology leadership and continued innovation for our customers and distribution through authorized servicing dealers. We are creating the framework for further profitable growth with huge investments in research and development. Those who slow down in this respect automatically fall behind – we will not slow down.”

Three new products hitting the market under our new leadership include: the TS 500i, our latest addition to the Cutquik® line. It is the world’s first electronically controlled fuel injected cut-off saw, and features 17% more power with only a 6% weight increase as compared to the TS 420. Also being introduced is the GS 461 “Rock Boss™” for the construction market. This power unit with bar and diamond abrasive chain is designed for wet cutting of square corners and small openings in concrete, reinforced concrete and brick walls. And finally, an addition to our chain saw family, the MS 461 chain saw. Featuring our stratified charge engine technology and an improved filtration system, this new powerhouse meets ’s stringent emission requirements. Read about each of these newcomers in the following pages.

Like Dr. Stihl, we are excited and confident about our future. Thank you for your past patronage. We look forward to partnering with you on the job throughout generation number three.

Sincerely, STIHL Limited

STORAGE TIP Thanks to their sophisticated technology and sturdy construction, STIHL chain saws require very little care and maintenance. During the season, this is likely to be confined to checking the chain regularly, and keeping the cutting teeth sharp for a better cut and to protect the engine.

Here are a few tips for storing your equipment during the winter months. This will ensure that your equipment, when required again, will be ready for action right away. LANDSCAPING 1. To get the equipment ready for winter, clean it first. The air filter, the cylinder fins, the spark plug and the dismantled cutting tool should be checked and cleaned (also see Owner’s Manual). Metal parts should be slightly lubricated with oil.

2. The fuel tank should be emptied. Run the carburetor until dry (Warning! Do not operate the throttle; run equipment in idle until the engine stops!). For winter storage, a dry and, if possible, dust-free and frost-free place would be ideal. You can save space if you 2 hang the equipment. And remember: the fuel mix deteriorates; to avoid malfunction, it should not be kept over a long period of time. Riddle: How did the Dogwood get its name? Answer: From its bark. WHAT SHOULD I TAKE INTO ACCOUNT MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE WHEN CHOOSING HEARING PROTECTION? Ear defenders need regular maintenance and cleaning to Ear defenders should sufficiently keep out ambient noise, but prevent skin irritation and other ear problems, and to keep them should not totally blank out important sounds like horns, sirens working effectively. The user information supplied with the and machine noises (overprotection). product includes cleaning instructions, which you should follow carefully. Damaged pads should not be reused. In particular with TIMBER A residual rating of 75 to 79 dB(A) at the ear is ideal. Noise combined hard hat + ear defenders, take care not to squash the levels over 87 dB(A) are never permissible. pads in the ear defenders when storing them away after use.

Ear defenders keep out external noise in different frequency ranges to different extents according to their design. These noise filtering characteristics are referred to as H, M and L (High, Medium, Low). The noise from STIHL chain saws and power tools can be described as mid to high-frequency. The M value 6 therefore offers the most appropriate hearing protection. PAYING FOR LAND RESTORATION Ultra Lightweight Many and farmers want to restore their and agricultural land, but cannot find the Long Guide Bars funding. A significant breakthrough may have appeared through The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the world’s most rigorous voluntary climate standard, now being used across North and South America. The game changer is a comprehensive soil and ecosystem carbon quantification BUILT FOR FORESTRY WORKERS methodology developed over the last five years by The Earth Partners LP, and which has now been These revolutionary guide bars are 30% lighter than traditional versions double validated by the VCS. because of a carbon fiber insert in the bar body, which removes a significant Plants and soils in terrestrial ecosystems hold over 2 trillion tons of carbon-in storage - more amount of steel from the construction of the bar, without compromising the than 350 times annual global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. However, compared to historic bar’s durability. These lightweight guide bars were successfully tested in the conditions, both agricultural soil carbon levels and global has been reduced by over of British Columbia. 60%, so there is much room for improvement. As most farmers and foresters know, soils and ecosystems are responsive to restoration, and the right plants in the right place quickly absorb and BENEFITS transfer atmospheric CO2 into the soil and the plant communities. The challenge has been how to • Weight reduced by 30% pay for it. • 20% more durable than the competition Nicolas Stern, the UK economist, estimated there is over 2.2 billion hectares of degraded land, • Built for heavy-duty use in large diameter professional which is now emitting GHGs that could be restored by farmers and foresters and again become healthy sinks. Much of these areas are the poorest rural regions of the world. Scientists reporting in the journal Science claim re-growing soil carbon levels can offset 50% of global GHG emissions • POWERFUL • FUEL-EFFICIENT • REDUCED EMISSIONS • PROFESSIONAL for the next 30 years. Of course increased soil and ecosystem carbon means increased soil fertility, reduced downstream flooding and decreased reliance on irrigation and fertilizers. For the fossil fuel industry; the main source of GHG pollution and the companies that are most likely to pay for soil and ecosystem restoration; what has been missing is a robust methodology for quantifying soil carbon improvements. There has been a lot of talk, but because GHG dynamics in soil and the varieties of human are so complex, a reliable system has never been developed. It is not surprising The Earth Partners’ comprehensive new method is the longest and most complex climate methodology ever written, or that it took five years to develop. But the breakthrough is how it was simplified for easy intuitive use. The VCS soil method was broken into modules that reflect common land use practices. It combines simple landscape mapping with practical sampling systems, so smaller farmers can get to high data confidence levels by combining their local plans with their neighbours. Working with the best soil scientists, the US Coalition on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases and a US Department of Agriculture Conservation Innovation Grant, the soil methodology has been tested across grassland, rangeland and savanna ecosystem restorations, in grain agriculture and vegetable production projects, on reclaimed mined lands, and is now also being applied in forests in the Americas and Europe, and demonstrated on agriculture land in Australia and . With the VCS’s new double validated soil methodology, there is now a real potential for the energy industry to shift towards becoming more carbon neutral, and for farmer’s and forester’s restoration projects across North and South America and around the world to be funded.
