Capturing the changing sounds of an English county By Sarah-Joy Maddeaux, Stuart Bowditch Abstract What does Essex sound like? How have its soundscapes changed? What do its soundscapes reveal about Essex society and culture? In 2015, the Essex Sound and Video Archive at the Essex Record Office gained a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to run the project, You Are Hear: sound and a sense of place. One output was an online audio map of past and present sounds of Essex, aiming to showcase the county’s diversity through its soundscapes, and to encourage comparisons of historic and present-day recordings. This article will describe the processes behind the development of the audio map, then give a flavour of the types of soundscapes we captured. Finally, the paper will question what the map reveals about the soundscapes of this oft-maligned British county, and what function the map can serve in developing a sense of place for the county’s inhabitants. This Report presents the results of the field survey of the operating railway line between Shenfield and Southminster. A companion Report is published for the two now-discontinued railway branches from Witham to Maldon, and from Woodham Ferrers to Maldon. Fieldwork was carried out between April and August 2007. The purpose of the Survey was to detail what survives of the structures of these lines and their accompanying works including buildings, bridges, embankments, cuttings and subsiduary constructions, to review the statutory designations and to suggest possible further usage for the lines. INTRODUCTION. Much of the track line and adjacent land of the two discontinued lines is in private or corporate ownership and is publicly accessible only where it is crossed by public roads and paths. Small parts have been developed by Local Councils as “Trails” as a public amenity. There are two Nature Reserves. Where building development has been permitted on the former track, some recognition of the former alignment is still recognisable by the line of streets, footpaths and land/property boundaries.

HISTORIC DEVELOPMENT Creeksea had only one manor which, from the C17, was held by the Harris family, the manor house (Creeksea Hall) being at the north end of the parish, adjacent to Creeksea church. Creeksea Place (probably originally called the New House) was probably built by one of the Harris family (possibly Arthur, who died in 1597, and was half-brother of Vincent Harris, builder of the Friary House on the Carmelite site in Maldon). A rainwater head on the north wing is dated 1569. The house was owned by the Harris family until 1650 but its subsequent ownership and tenancy is unclear. The east wing was demolished in about 1740, possibly to make the house suitable for use by tenant farmers. Wall fragments indicate that there was originally a west wing, but it is not clear if the courtyard was enclosed on its open side by a south wing, or merely by a wall and gateway as shown on the RCHM plan. The north wing extends westwards, probably as a service wing, and is Tudor, with Edwardian alterations and additions. The original main entrance was on the east side of the east wing, approached from the east through the surviving Tudor brick gateway into the square walled outer courtyard. The RCHM description mentions that the foundations of two walled gardens to the south and west of the house had been exposed, but did not suggest a date for these, and it is not clear exactly where they were sited.
