The Art of Making Mistakes Misha Alperin Edited by Inna Novosad-Maehlum Music is a creation of the Universe Just like a human being, it reflects God. Real music can be recognized by its soul -- again, like a person. At first sight, music sounds like a language, with its own grammatical and stylistic shades. However, beneath the surface, music is neither style nor grammar. There is a mystery hidden in music -- a mystery that is not immediately obvious. Its mystery and unpredictability are what I am seeking. • Rachmaninov (1873-1943)
RUSSIAN, SOVIET & POST-SOVIET CONCERTOS A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) Born at Oneg, Novgorod Region. He had piano lessons from an early age but his serious training in composition began at the Moscow Conservatory where he studied counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev and harmony with Anton Arensky. He began to compose and for the rest of his life divided his musical time between composing, conducting and piano playing gaining great fame in all three. After leaving Russia permanently in 1917, the need to make a living made his role as a piano virtuoso predominant. His 4 Piano Concertos, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and substantial solo piano works make him one of the world's most-performed composers. However, he also composed operas and liturgical choral works as well as other pieces for orchestra, chamber groups and voice.

  • DECEMBER 2012 LIST Last Posting Dates for Christmas 2012
tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 DECEMBER 2012 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer December is usually a bit slim on the ground as far as major new releases go, with most companies focusing their best releases slightly earlier in the Autumn. However, we were pleasantly surprised to see how many new issues there actually are this month, still managing to fill several pages of this catalogue. One title to point out, albeit not ‘new’, is the latest bargain boxset from Sony: the RCA Living Stereo Collection, including 60 recordings from the famous catalogue. We get many enquiries about availability of these titles as they can be difficult to get hold of, so it is nice to see them on the market again. The size of the set may be a bit off-putting to some, but it is very well priced at £69.95 (just £1.17 per disc!). See p.2. New special offers this month include the Ondine, Praga, IDI (historical), Lyrita and Collegium labels, plus selected titles from Harmonia Mundi, EMI and Berlin Classics. There is also a small selection of reduced-price DVDs on p.25. A lot of special offers that have featured in recent mailings are due to come to an end at this month. A full list of these can be found on p.25 - there are 28 in total! If you are interested in taking advantage of the special prices AND receiving them before Christmas, we would urge you to order as soon as possible. We will be closed for the Christmas break from 2pm on Friday 21st December and re-open at 9am on Wednesday 2nd January.
