Children and Childhood in the Madras Presidency, 1919-1943 Catriona Ellis Doctor of Philosophy History, Classics and Archaeology The University of Edinburgh 2016 1 Abstract This thesis interrogates the emergence of a universal modern idea of childhood in the Madras Presidency between 1920 and 1942. It considers the construction and uses of ‘childhood’ as a conceptual category and the ways in which this informed intervention in the lives of children, particularly in the spheres of education and juvenile justice. Against a background of calls for national self-determination, the thesis considers elite debates about childhood as specifically ‘Indian’, examining the ways in which ‘the child’ emerged in late colonial South India as an object to be reformed and as a ‘human becoming’ or future citizen of an independent nation.

Ullal is ranked 18th with a net worth of $1.3 billion while Sethi is ranked 21st with a net worth of $1 billion. 57 year old Ullal has been president and CEO of a computer networking firm, Arista Networks, since 2008. 63 year old Sethi, is the vice president of IT consulting and outsourcing company Syntel which she founded with her husband Bharat Desai in 1980 in their apartment in Troy, Michigan. The most followed world leaders In July 2018, Global communications agency, Burson Cohn & Wolfe (BCW) released report of a study titled „Twiplomacy‟ in which Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged as the third most followed leader on Twitter with 42 million followers while India‟s external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj got highlighted as the most followed female world leader as well as the most followed foreign minister (more than 11 million followers) in the world. It was widely recognized as the Chinese human rights manifesto and a landmark document in China’s quest for democracy. However, if Charter 08 was a clarion call for the new march to democracy in China, its political impact has been disappointing. Its primary drafter Liu Xiaobo, after being kept in police custody over one year, was sentenced on Christmas Day of 2009 to 11 years in prison for the “the crime of inciting subversion of state power”, nor has the Chinese communist party-state taken a single step toward democratisation or improving human rights during the year.1 This article offers a preliminary assessment of Charter 08, with special attention to its connection with liberal forces in China. Liu Xiaobo The Origins of Charter 08 and the Crystallisation of Liberal and Democratic Ideas in China Charter 08 was not a bolt from the blue but the result of careful deliberation and theoretical debate, especially the discourse on liberalism since the late 1990s. In its timing, Charter 08 anticipated that major political change would take place in China in 2009 in light of a number of important anniversaries. These included the 20th anniversary of the June 4th crackdown, the 50th anniversary of the exile of the Dalai Lama, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and the 90th anniversary of the May 4th Movement.
