Riggs Harry Watson © 2016 Brooke Michele Bauer ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Brooke Michele Bauer: Being Catawba: The World of Sally New River, 1746-1840 (Under the direction of Kathleen DuVal and Theda Perdue) This dissertation analyzes a segment of the history of the Catawba Indian Nation of South Carolina by concentrating on how Catawba women in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries created, promoted, and preserved a Catawba identity through kinship, land ownership, and economic productivity. Catawba kinship, land, and pottery were and are the most important distinguishing attributes of being Catawba. Each of the three aspects are interconnected with land serving as the foundation upon which Catawba people formed a nation through their kinship connections and as a space where Catawba women collected clay for pottery. Whereas scholarship on the Catawbas has stressed dramatic transformation, focusing on the lives of eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Catawba women reveals startling continuities in Catawba ways of being. This dissertation tells a story of Catawba women’s lived experiences and their adaptive responses to the immense change occurring in their world by focusing on their economic, political, and social relationships. iii In honor of the Catawba women of my family and in memory of my uncle, Wayne George. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The completion of this dissertation is due in large part to many special people who challenged and supported me along the way. Because Catawba politics dictated that issues relevant to the entire Nation required the consensus of all adult Catawbas, the council meeting probably transpired as follows. A headman told the men and women gathered at the meeting that just 500 acres of Catawba land remained. White South Carolinians, he reminded them, had taken a majority of their land. Within the remaining 500 acres stood three Catawba towns and a few smaller fields where Catawba women grew corn and beans. Because Catawba women controlled and managed both the agriculture and the daily running of the towns, their opinions were particularly important. The headman underscored the threat to Catawba land several times in his speech, causing a low murmur to circulate among his people. The anxious whispers of Catawba

Addressing the Questionable Paucity of Amerindian Admixture in African North American Genetic Lineages Fatimah LC Jackson* *Department of Biology, Howard University Washington, DC, USA Received July 31st, 2020; Revised September 26th, 2020; Accepted September 28th, 2020 ABSTRACT African North Americans are primarily an amalgamation of African lineages from West, Central, and Southeast Africa coupled with modest gene flow from specific non-Africans including North Atlantic and Iberian European lineages and Northeast, Mid- Atlantic, and Southeastern Amerindian North American lineages. Little research has gone into discerning the specific Amerindian contributions to African North American lineages because the historically appropriate genetic reference database is lacking. This paper reviews the historically relevant Amerindian populations for this database and discusses the continuing incongruence between the pervasive cultural consciousness of Amerindian ancestry among African North Americans and the current limited evidence for past genetic admixture.     “Blood for blood”: David Fanning and Retaliatory Violence between Tories and Whigs in the Revolutionary Carolinas By: Gregory Mayr History 586: Advanced Seminar in History Kansas State University Spring 2014 Professor Louise Breen Abstract This paper, relying primarily on Loyalist Colonel David Fanning’s personal narrative of the American Revolution, will argue that Fanning applied, in some of his actions, a form of retributive reasoning similar to that described by Historians Wayne E. Lee and Jeffrey J. Crow as typical for the revolutionary Carolinas. In Fanning’s case, the code by which he decided what to do in given situations was more complex than a one-dimensional law of retaliation; Fanning made an effort to incorporate conventional forms of honor into his actions, but harbored a great deal of distrust for his adversaries that came out of the experiences he had during the Revolution with his Whig opponents. His targets were purposive, aimed at Whig leadership, supplies and government officials. Fanning’s level of violence escalated toward the end of the revolution due to his genuine disdain for the rebels and his resentment at fighting what he eventually acknowledged to be a losing war. Keywords: Fanning; Retaliation; Retribution; lex talionis; Burke 2 On 28 February 1782, the infamous loyalist partisan David Fanning wrote a cold and threatening letter of protest to Governor Thomas Burke of North Carolina. The Whig government had hanged “three of my men, one Captain and two privates,” and was detaining an additional “Captain and six men under the sentence of death.”1 Fanning knew that the British cause had entered its death throes with the definitive American victory at Yorktown, Virginia, in October, 1781, but fighting units remained mobilized until the signing of the peace treaty in 1783, and in the meantime governments throughout the former colonies had to make decisions about how to deal with the militia men who continued the civil war in the southern frontier.

  • Catawba Militarism: Ethnohistorical and Archaeological Overviews
    CATAWBA MILITARISM: ETHNOHISTORICAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL OVERVIEWS by Charles L. Heath Abstract While many Indian societies in the Carolinas disappeared into the multi-colored fabric of Southern history before the mid-1700s, the Catawba Nation emerged battered, but ethnically viable, from the chaos of their colonial experience. Later, the Nation’s people managed to circumvent Removal in the 1830s and many of their descendants live in the traditional Catawba homeland today. To achieve this distinction, colonial and antebellum period Catawba leaders actively affected the cultural survival of their people by projecting a bellicose attitude and strategically promoting Catawba warriors as highly desired military auxiliaries, or “ethnic soldiers,” of South Carolina’s imperial and state militias after 1670. This paper focuses on Catawba militarism as an adaptive strategy and further elaborates on the effects of this adaptation on Catawba society, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While largely ethnohistorical in content, potential archaeological aspects of Catawba militarism are explored to suggest avenues for future research. American Indian societies in eastern North America responded to European imperialism in countless ways. Although some societies, such as the Powhatans and the Yamassees (Gleach 1997; Lee 1963), attempted to aggressively resist European hegemony by attacking their oppressors, resistance and adaptation took radically different forms in a colonial world oft referred to as a “tribal zone,” a “shatter zone,” or the “violent edge of empire” (Ethridge 2003; Ferguson and Whitehead 1999a, 1999b). Perhaps unique among their indigenous contemporaries in the Carolinas, the ethnically diverse peoples who came to form the “Catawba Nation” (see Davis and Riggs this volume) proactively sought to ensure their socio- political and cultural survival by strategically positioning themselves on the southern Anglo-American frontier as a militaristic society of “ethnic soldiers” (see Ferguson and Whitehead 1999a, 1999b).

Signed: _____________________________ (Paul Daniel Shirley) 2 Abstract This thesis examines the impact of revolution upon slavery in the Atlantic world, focusing upon the period of profound and unprecedented change and conflict in the Bahamas during the final decades of the eighteenth century. It argues that the Bahamian experience can only be satisfactorily understood with reference to the revolutionary upheavals that were transforming the larger Atlantic world in those years. From 1783, the arrival of black and white migrants displaced by the American Revolution resulted in quantitative and qualitative social, economic and political transformation in the Bahamas. The thesis assesses the nature and significance of the sudden demographic shift to a non-white majority in the archipelago, the development of many hitherto unsettled islands, and efforts to construct a cotton-based plantation economy. It also traces the trajectory and dynamics of the complex struggles that ensued from these changes. During the 1780s, émigré Loyalist slaveholders from the American South, intent on establishing a Bahamian plantocracy, confronted not only non-white Bahamians exploring enlarged possibilities for greater control over their own lives, but also an existing white population determined to defend their own interests, and a belligerent governor with a penchant for idiosyncratic antislavery initiatives. In the 1790s, a potentially explosive situation was inflamed still further as a new wave of war and revolution engulfed the Atlantic.
