Fleisch) Abstract: Alfred Fleisch’s period as Professor of Physiology and Chemistry at the University of Tartu (1926–1932) was highlighted by outstanding achievements—here he constructed various original devices for studying respiration and blood circulation, published his research results in specialised key magazines together with his Estonian assistant and wrote concise literature reviews for the world’s most authoritative manuals. Fleisch’s research legacy had an important influence on the directions of post-World War II physiological research at the University of Tartu. World War II shaped the history of continents and the fate of many researchers but did not sever the connection between generations of scholars, as the example of Fleisch’s research legacy demonstrates. The University of Tartu Museum’s collection includes both a device constructed by Fleisch as well as locally made modifications based on his instruments that were constructed later. Both the objects and archive material found in the museum collection allow us to study the less examined aspects of this topic more thoroughly. Acta Historica Tallinnensia, 2008, 13, 68–91 doi: 10.3176/hist.2008.2.04 THE PROS AND CONS OF PANEUROPE Estonian discussion on European unification in the interwar period Pauli HEIKKILÄ Scholar-in-residence, Institut für Europäische Geschichte, Ilvesmäentie 8, 27400 Kiukainen, Finland; [email protected] The First World War resulted in both numerous independent states and intensified plans for European unification. This article deals with the Estonian discussion on the unification during the interwar period as a national question: finding an Estonian place in Europe. The reasons to oppose or promote unification can be divided into diplomatic, economic and cultural dimensions. The latter was emphasized more in Estonia than anywhere else. Accordingly, the promoters (such as Kaarel Robert Pusta and Jaan Tõnisson) cherished the idea of European solidarity as the ultimate reason for unification. The opponents (for example Harald Tammer) considered national identities too weak – at least for the moment – to engage in unification. The discussion was at its peak from autumn 1929 to January 1931, when the Estonian Society of Paneuropean Union was established and the French Prime Minister Aristide Briand circulated an official memorandum on European federation within the League of Nations. The discussion had already withered by 1934, the beginning of ‘the silent era’ in Estonian politics. The end of the First World War resulted in the independence of several nations of the former Russian and Austrian empires. On the other hand, the League of Nations was founded as an organization to manage international relations. This, however, was not enough for all and various calls for unification of Europe emerged in the early 1920s.

HeldurActa Baltica Sander Historiae et Philosophiae Scientiarum Vol. 6, No. 1 (Spring 2018 ) DOI : 10.11590/abhps.2018.1.05 SHORT COMMUNICATIONS Günther Weber, Benjamin Sass and Eduard Philipp Körber, Lutheran Pastors of Võnnu: Sacred Trees, Felling of a Sacred Oak and Planting of an Oak to Herald Freedom for the Estonian People Heldur Sander Retired scientist Introduction This year marked the passing of 100 years from the birth of the Republic of Estonia on 24 February 1918. After the times of turbulence in between, we, the Estonians, are now able to celebrate this event for the 27th year since the regaining of independence. If we also count in the past decades of sovereignty (1918–1940), it appears that we have been able to sustain our independence for about half the time. The other 50 years of deprivation did not mean that we ceased to exist: the land, the culture and the faith of the people in restoring the independence and national continuity did not fail even under occupation. The formation of theE stonian nation, unity and statehood have been expounded by many a person in numerous writings. The entire fabric of our modern educational and cultural world on this tiny piece of land has been woven by many bright minds of various nationalities. One subgroup of such people was Lutheran pastors, who proved to be prominent promoters of our faith and education, issuers of publications on school education, theology and belles- lettres, researchers of nature and culture and compilers of numerous scientific articles. It is thanks to them that we have become who we are.
