  • Coke Studio Pakistan: an Ode to Eastern Music with a Western Touch
ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 Coke Studio Pakistan: An Ode to Eastern Music with a Western Touch SHAHWAR KIBRIA Shahwar Kibria ([email protected]) is a research scholar at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Vol. 55, Issue No. 12, 21 Mar, 2020 Since it was first aired in 2008, Coke Studio Pakistan has emerged as an unprecedented musical movement in South Asia. It has revitalised traditional and Eastern classical music of South Asia by incorporating contemporary Western music instrumentation and new-age production elements. Under the religious nationalism of military dictator Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, the production and dissemination of creative arts were curtailed in Pakistan between 1977 and 1988. Incidentally, the censure against artistic and creative practice also coincided with the transnational movement of qawwali art form as prominent qawwals began carrying it outside Pakistan. American audiences were first exposed to qawwali in 1978 when Gulam Farid Sabri and Maqbool Ahmed Sabri performed at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall. The performance was referred to as the “aural equivalent of the dancing dervishes” in the New York Times (Rockwell 1979). However, it was not until Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s performance at the popular World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival in 1985 in Colchester, England, following his collaboration with Peter Gabriel, that qawwali became evident in the global music cultures. Khan pioneered the fusion of Eastern vocals and Western instrumentation, and such a coming together of different musical elements was witnessed in several albums he worked for subsequently. Some of them include "Mustt Mustt" in 1990 ISSN (Online) - 2349-8846 and "Night Song" in 1996 with Canadian musician Michael Brook, the music score for the film The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and a soundtrack album for the film Dead Man Walking (1996) with Peter Gabriel, and a collaborative project with Eddie Vedder of the rock band Pearl Jam.

  • Songs from the Other Side: Listening to Pakistani Voices in India
SONGS FROM THE OTHER SIDE: LISTENING TO PAKISTANI VOICES IN INDIA John Shields Caldwell A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music (Musicology). Chapel Hill 2021 Approved by: Michael Figueroa Jayson Beaster-Jones David Garcia Mark Katz Pavitra Sundar © 2021 John Shields Caldwell ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT John Shields Caldwell: Songs from the Other Side: Listening to Pakistani Voices in India (Under the direction of Michael Figueroa) In this dissertation I investigate how Indian listeners have listened to Pakistani songs and singing voices in the period between the 1970s and the present. Since Indian film music dominates the South Asian cultural landscape, I argue that the movement of Pakistani songs into India is both a form of resistance and a mode of cultural diplomacy. Although the two nations share a common history and an official language, cultural flows between India and Pakistan have been impeded by decades of political enmity and restrictions on trade and travel, such that Pakistani music has generally not been able to find a foothold in the Indian songscape. I chart the few historical moments of exception when Pakistani songs and voices have found particular vectors of transmission by which they have reached Indian listeners. These moments include: the vinyl invasion of the 1970s, when the Indian market for recorded ghazal was dominated by Pakistani artists; two separate periods in the 1980s and 2000s when Pakistani female and male vocalists respectively sang playback in Indian films; the first decade of the new millennium when international Sufi music festivals brought Pakistani singers to India; and the 2010s, when Pakistani artists participated extensively in television music competition shows.

  • Civic Engagement Through Community Service
Civic Engagement Through Community Service APPNA Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America 6414 South Cass Avenue, Westmont, IL 60559-3209, USA EDITORIAL Through think and thin, APPNA was there It is customary of the festive holiday season to reflect back to get a sense of gains and losses as another year swept by us. I am certain you would agree with me that year 2017 saw some of most significant events in our recent history, If we consider our adopted homeland USA, Republicans and Donald Trump took over the Government and Presidency with a very ambitious agenda, not all of it necessarily favorable to us, the whole country especially Houston, and Puerto Rico was devastated by Harvey and Maria, and currently we are experiencing the coldest winter temperatures throughout the East and Midwest. If we look at Pakistan, Judiciary stepped in and disqualified Prime Minister causing some political instability and uncertainty, while as always people of Pakistan still struggling to access basic necessities like Clean Water, Electricity, Gas and Health Care. One commendable aspect of this year for me was the critical role APPNA played in advocating and protecting not only the rights of its members but utilize the collective strength of its membership to engage with local communities and made significant strides in improving relationships within our communities. This year APPNA chapters played much more prominent role albeit it is to collaborate or establish food pantry, establish or further organize Free clinics, or organize health fair in more and more cities. APPNA was at the forefront of disaster relief work not only in USA but also around the world including sending relief missions to Rohingya Muslims forced to migrate to Bangladesh.

  • Coke Studio, Memory, and the Music Video
This is the version of the article accepted for publication in BioScope: South Asian Screen Studies published by SAGE https://doi.org/10.1177/0974927619896771 Accepted version downloaded from SOAS Research Online: http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/31946/ A Soundtrack for Reimagining Pakistan? Coke Studio, memory, and the music video Richard David Williams (SOAS University of London, [email protected]) and Rafay Mahmood (Independent, [email protected]) Abstract: Since 2007, Coke Studio has rapidly become one of the most influential platforms in televisual, diGital and musical media, and has assumed a siGnificant role in GeneratinG new narratives about Pakistani modernity. The musical pieces in Coke Studio’s videos re-work a ranGe of Genres and performinG arts, encompassinG popular and familiar sonGs, as well as resuscitatinG classical poetry and the musical traditions of marGinalised communities. This re-workinG of the creative arts of South Asia represents an innovative approach to sound, lanGuage, and form, but also poses larGer questions about how cultural memory and national narratives can be reimagined throuGh musical media, and then further re-worked by media consumers and diGital audiences. This article considers how Coke Studio’s music videos have been both celebrated and criticized, and explores the online conversations that compared new covers to the oriGinals, be they much loved or lonG-forGotten. The ways in which the videos are viewed, shared, and dissected online sheds liGht on new modes of media consumption and self-reflection. FollowinG specific examples, we examine the larGer implications of the hybrid text-video- audio object in the diGital age, and how the consumers of Coke Studio actively participate in developinG new narratives about South Asian history and Pakistani modernity.
